Which tongue would you choose?

What we say probably affects more people than any other action we take. It is not surprising then, to find that Proverbs gives special attention to words and how they are used. Four common speech patterns are described in Proverbs. The first two should be copied; the last two should be avoided.

The Controlled Tongue - Those with this speech pattern think before speaking, know when silence is best, and give wise counsel.

10:19 When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.
11:12, 13 A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his tongue.
12:16 A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult.
13:3 He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.
15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
15:4 The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.
15:28 The heart of the righteous weighs its answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil.
16:23 A wise man's heart guides his mouth, and his lips promote instruction.
17:14 Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.
17:27, 28 A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered. Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.
21:23 He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.
24:26 An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.

The Caring Tongue - Those with this speech pattern speak truthfully while seeking to encourage.

10:32 The lips of the righteous know what is fitting, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.
12: 18, 25 Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind words cheers him up.
15:23 A man finds joy in giving an apt reply - and how good is a timely word!
16:24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
25:15 Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.
27:9 Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of one's friend springs from his earnest counsel.

The Conniving Tongue - Those with this speech pattern are filled with wrong motives, gossip, slander, and a desire to twist the truth.

6:12-14 A scoundrel and villain who goes about with a corrupt mouth, who winks with his eye, signals with his feet and motions with his fingers, who plots evil with deceit in his heart - he always stirs up dissension.
8:13 To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.
16:28 A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends.
18:8 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man's inmost parts.
25:18 Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow is the man who gives false testimony against his neighbor.
26:20-28 Without wood a fire goes out, without gossip a quarrel dies down. as charcoal to embers and wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife. The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man's inmost parts (Solomon must of liked this one because it is a repeat from 18:8 ). Like a coating of glaze over earthenware are fervent lips with an evil heart. A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but in his heart he harbors deceit. Though his speech is charming, do not believe him, for seven abominations fill his heart. His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly. If a man digs a pit, he will fall into it; if a man rolls a stone, it will roll back on him. A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin.

The Careless Tongue - Those with this speech pattern are filled with lies, curses, quick-tempered words - which can lead to rebellion and destruction

10:18, 32 He who conceals his hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool. The lips of the righteous know what is fitting, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.
11:9 With his mouth the godless destroys his neighbor, but through knowledge the righteous escape.
17:9, 14, 19 He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends. Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out. He who loves a quarrel loves sin; he who builds a high gate invites destruction.
20:19 A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man who talks too much.
25:23 As a north wind brings rain, so a sly tongue brings angry looks.

The poetry of Proverbs

"By Wisdom a house is built,
and through understanding it is established;
through knowledge its rooms are filled
with rare and beautiful treasures."
Proverbs 24:3-4

In dream interpretation, a house represents the soul. In thinking of giving your all to God, then your soul, mind and body are His. Wisdom is gained through reverence to God.

Isn't it lovely to think of the "rooms" of your soul being filled with rare and beautiful treasures? Doesn't that just fill you with awe and gratitude to our heavenly Father?

Did you ever have a teacher that called roll? And when they got to your name you had to acknowledge your presence by saying "here."

Well, I'm here.

And to recap the past week....
I got a near hit by lightning in the last storm that blew my way. It took out my phones, my pump in my well and my satellite dish. Everything else was fine. I had my computer all along. My well got fixed first, yeah water! Then my phone was the next day! And finally, the satellite dish was fixed two days ago.

School ends in just one week, however I've decided to teach summer school for the month of June to pick some extra $cha-ching$ (it makes my debts happy when I do that). Also, my evening classes are almost over. Summer semester is my last semester. I have classes now on Monday and Wednesday night.

It is a full life and I am enjoying it. I didn't mean to stay away so long, it just kinda slipped up on me.

Keep smiling
Karen

I was just reading a comment on my most recent post before this one that said, "We miss you where have you been?"

Then I looked at my last post and it was dated April 14th!! Oh my!!

Honestly, I've been here all along

I just haven't had much on my mind. Well, not enough that anyone would want to hear. Just stuff. Or maybe I'm stuck in the I can't think of anything clever to say zone.

I watch several blogs. Mostly my friends. Some are very poetic, some are very skilled at delivering a message of inspirationally spiritual proportions, some are good at sounding so friendly and humorous.

ho hum. I seem to not have a style....oh well, here is my attempt at being poetic. It isn't spiritually inspired necessarily.

Ode to Obie
My is short
and perfectly marked
with stripes and shades
of white brown and black.
He's a perfect companion
that never complains
His wag brings a smile
and his pant looks like a laugh
He likes to play ball
I throw
He catches
He holds on tight
I try to get it away from him
He does the head toss thing
I finally get it away from him
and throw it
and it starts all over again
He sleeps on my bed til I turn out the light
then he stands guard in the den
ever watchful
my guard dog
all ears
ready to bark you to death
He sounds so vicious
but he really is sweet
I love him a lot
my Obie.

True Humility

I came across this definition for humility when I was going over some old notes on a book I read.

Here it is, what do you think of this definition?

Humility - True humility is an accurate appraisal of our worth in Christ...thankfulness, generosity, kindness and self-confidence constitute true humility (not self-depreciation).

Remember don't put down what God has made! You are beautiful

How you think about yourself...

This is a follow-up to a comment I posted on one of Terry's (racefan) blog post...

I had mentioned the book, Search for Significance in my comments and I wanted to post on my blog the scripitual truths versus Satan's lies that we need to capture in our heart so that we won't become captive by the lies anymore!!

God's Truth:
You are completely forgiven and fully pleasing to God.

Romans 5:1 "Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."

Satan's Lie:
You must meet certain standards to feel good about yourself (sometimes referred to as a fear of failure)

God's Truth:
You are totally accepted by God!

Colossians 1:21-22 "And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach."

Satan's Lie:
You must be approved or accepted by certain others to feel good about yourself (also known as fear of rejection)

God's Truth:
I am deeply loved by God.

IJohn 4:9-10 "By this the love of God manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His to be the propitiation for our sins."

Satan's Lie:
Those who fail (even myself) are unworthy of love and deserve to be blamed and condemned (fear of punishment or a propensity to punishment)

God's Truth:
I am absolutely complete in Christ.

II Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore, if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature the old things passed away; behold, new things have come."

Satan's Lie:
I am what I am, I cannot change, I am hopeless (also known as shame)

Don't believe Satan's lies anymore about yourself. Shed all that binds you in wrong thinking. When you've asked for God's forgiveness you must realize what you mean to God. You are significant. Live in the truth. Be confident in your transformation and in the transforming power of God!!
Amen!!

Did you miss me?

I just got back from a vacation near the beach staying with some old friends of our family.

It was so restful and so eventful all at the same time. I got to spend time in some great conversation catching up and getting to know my friends even better than I already knew them. I took walks on my own out to the beach in solitude, that was wonderful. I love to go on walks early in the morning just as the sun is coming up. In this little town there are sidewalks everywhere. A lot of people walked that early or rode bikes. Everyone told each other "Good Morning." So pleasant!

I visited historical sites and was amazed by the generations of people that had occupied this island and how it has evolved today. I love good history, doesn't everyone? I even picked up the original rules for living in the first established colony of Georgia. The last rule was "no lawyers"

It seems Oglethorpe saw Georgia as a 2nd opportunity for British debtors. Instead of jail they were given the opportunity to come to Georgia to settle the land. It was pretty well thought out. He had tradesmen of every occupation, so that when they arrived...poof, instant civilization.

I am quite proud of my roots. Oh yes, I also learned that John and Charles Wesley stayed in that area also. They referred to the world as their mission field. I'm glad for their contributions to the settlement of Georgia too.

All in all it was a wonderful trip! Now to do laundry!

Busy even on vacation?

This is the week of our county's Spring Break in the school system where I work. It is funny how I can be so busy at school and then as soon as I have time off, I become busy at home!

I guess I just put off what needs to be done until I am not able to go to work. So far I've taken the to the vet for all his annual shots and check-ups, I've helped my by taking him to get his windshield replaced on his car (it had a humongous crack!)and I've been finishing up various projects due for my college classes. Whew!

Yesterday,I was looking at my calendar that hangs in my pantry in the kitchen...you know, the one you write on, but never look at? Anyway, I noticed I was suppose to have gone to my doctor on St. Patrick's Day! Oops! Nobody called to remind me? It was just a check-up. I feel fine. I'm sure they'll call me eventually to say, do you want to reschedule, right?

Oh well, keep me in your prayers as I will be leaving tomorrow for a little break. Mom and I are going to visit friends on the coast (Georgia coast that is...not much coast there really...some islands). But, traveling mercies would be nice! Especially, since I will be driving

Sorry if this sounds like I've got a million things on my mind and I'm trying to keep up with them all at once...but, sometimes an open schedule, like vacation, can do this to me

Be back soon
Karen
