Worth Dying For”
Glynnis Whitwer, Senior Editor ‒ “P31 Woman Magazine,” Proverbs 31 Speaker Team Member
Key Verse:
Philippians 1:21, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” (NIV)
Devotion:
Last fall, my 14-year-old Josh, emailed me an article he found on a website. It was about a Christian in China who was persecuted to the point of death for his faith. There wasn’t any personal note from my , just the article. I read it, was moved and didn’t think much else about it.
Several months later, a magazine arrived in the mail addressed to Josh. It was from the organization Voice of the Martyrs. I remembered the emailed article and connected the dots. Obviously, this website interested my .
When Josh came home from school, I showed him the magazine and asked, “Why are you interested in this?” I thought perhaps he’d discussed it at youth group or Young Life.
Without a pause, and with sincerity shining from his young face, he answered, “I’ve always wanted to be a martyr.”
My heart started to thud and my insides twisted. This was not what I expected to hear. My mind raced frantically, trying to make sense of his answer. Surely, I reasoned, he doesn’t know what a martyr is. Hoping my assumption was true, I asked “Do you know what a martyr is?”
“Yes,” he replied, “someone who’s willing to die for his faith. I want that kind of faith.”
After recovering from the shock of his answer, and battling the fear of a mother’s heart, God revealed something to me about my ’s desire to be a martyr. It’s not that my wants to die, but that he’s found something worth dying for.
At 14, Josh looks around him and sees people pursuing things that are meaningless. He’s watched friends search for happiness in popularity, music, drinking, being rebellious and disrespectful. Even his young mind can tell none of these things are worth dying for.
But many years ago, my met Jesus. And when he did, Josh discovered something that mattered … Someone worth dying for.
I believe God’s eyes roam the earth looking for a of His whose faith burns in her chest … who loves Jesus Christ with such passion, that sacrifice for His sake is an honor. The first believers were trained to suffer for Christ’s sake, while many today are trained to be happy and comfortable in their faith.
The call is loud and clear ‒ Jesus is worth living and dying for. Jesus is worth living life to the fullest. Jesus is worth dying to self-centered desires. Jesus is worth living as if every day could be our last. Jesus is worth dying to a life that is all about us.
Jesus is worth it all. Josh got this right. Do we?
My Prayer for Today:
Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing meaning and worth to my life. You are worthy of all I can offer. Help me when I focus more on receiving things from You, rather than giving back to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Application Steps:
Identify on a scale of one to 10 (with 10 being the highest) your level of commitment to your faith. In prayer, seek God’s direction on how to increase your level of commitment to Him.
Reflection Points:
Read today’s key verse, Philippians 1:21. What do you think Paul means when he says, “to live is Christ”?
How does Paul’s view of life differ from those who aren’t passionate about their faith in Jesus?
What difference does your personal faith in Jesus make in your attitude toward suffering?
Why is earthly success an empty victory?
How would God define victory in your life?
Power Verses:
Matthew 16:24-25, “Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.’” (NIV)
Matthew 7:13-14, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” (NIV)
Ecclesiastes 2:11, “Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.” (NIV)
Hebrew 10:5-7, “Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: ‘Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. Then I said, 'Here I am – it is written about me in the scroll – I have come to do your will, O God.'” (NIV)

Standing Firm in Faith
1 Corinthians 15:57-58
God knows that the spiritual battle rages fiercely and that His are under attack. What does His Word tell us about the Devil’s schemes?
The schemes are well organized. Satan’s plans have one purpose: to oppose the Lord. He attempts this by hindering God’s and preventing others from joining God’s family. The Greek word for “schemes” is methodea, from which we get our word method. His tactics vary but untruths are a common device
because his native language is lying. In fact, Jesus called him the Father of lies (John 8:44).
The attacks are personal. Ephesians 6:12 describes spiritual warfare as wrestling against evil forces, a picture of hand-to-hand combat. That is very personal. Satan tailors strategies to our weaknesses and seeks to discredit God in the eyes of His church and the world.
The plans are backed by powerful forces. We are battling against a large army – rulers, powers, the dark forces of this world, and the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. (v. 12) Fortunately, “Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
What are we to do against such an enemy? Ephesians 6:13 tells us to stand firm. This is not a passive stance but an active one. It requires remaining alert, praying in the Spirit on all occasions, and wholeheartedly giving ourselves to the Lord’s work. (v. 1
The stronger our faith is, the easier it will be to maintain our position in our spiritual battles. Soldier of God, are you holding firm?

Rajasthan Anti-Conversion Bill Before India's

Rajasthan Anti-Conversion Bill Before India's President
A proposed anti-conversion bill that would severely limit the freedom of Gospel workers in Rajasthan state was rejected by its governor and is now with the president of India for his consideration.
If passed as a law, the bill would make conditions for sharing the Gospel in Rajasthan even more stringent than in other states where anti-conversion legislation has been passed. Under the bill's proposed conditions, even a third-party complaint of conversion activity can be evidence for arrest and imprisonment.
Spreading a religious message or news in a public setting is prohibited under the bill, and offenders could face up to five years' imprisonment and a fine of about $1,000. Any agency involved in "conversion activities" would be punished by having its state registration permanently cancelled, prohibiting its function within the state. Yet the bill decrees no punishment for conversion back to the religion of one's ancestors.
Various secular human rights activists, along with religious minority groups, are protesting the controversial bill.
When Rajasthan's governor received the bill from the state assembly, she did not approve it on grounds that it would affect the fundamental right of religion. She instead advised the state assembly to approach India's president with it.
This courageous intervention is encouraging news for Christians sharing the Good News in Rajasthan?and cause for fervent prayer among Christians worldwide as India's president now looks at the proposed legislation. Especially at stake is the issue of India's downtrodden Dalits and other low-caste groups, as many among their people are eagerly and willingly turning to Christ as they hear the Gospel. As the opposition seeks to squelch this activity, persecution has been on the rise.
"Even though we are going through difficult situations, the Lord has been sustaining us and protecting our pastors," says Simon John, GFA's field leader in North India. "We have been able to see great results ... the Lord is doing great wonders in this country of India. Despite these difficulties, we know the Lord will raise up more workers, and we request your prayers for the state of Rajasthan."
Simon John especially requests that we pray for courage for the pastors and missionaries faithfully sharing Christ in Rajasthan at this crucial time, that in all circumstances they would remain bold in their witness for Him. Pray also for wisdom for India's government, that it would act in such a way as to uphold freedom of religion.

TRUSTING YOUR

TRUSTING YOUR 2 Corinthians 7:16 I rejoice that in everything I have confidence in you
When I was 14 years old my family moved off the farm in Minnesota where I was born. But I never adjusted to our new home in Arizona. When I was only 15 my parents let me take a bus back to Minnesota to work on the farm for the summer. The following summer I drove an old car back to Minnesota by myself. The family I stayed with asked if I would like to live with them and finish high school in Minnesota. To my great joy my parents said it was okay.
What impact did my parents' trust have on me? I never wanted to do anything to lose their trust. Their trust in me was a great driving force in my life and the greatest gift they ever gave me. Next to the Holy Spirit in me, that trust has been the greatest deterrent to immorality. Even years later when I was in the military and thousands of miles from home, I didn't want to lose their trust.
When you effectively communicate your love, trust and respect to your , they will learn to value these qualities so much that they will never intentionally do anything to lose them. Then when they are introduced to Christ, they will also value His love, trust and respect. "But my isn't trustworthy," you say. Neither are you completely trustworthy. Yet God has entrusted you with the gospel. That gives you something to live up to. What can you possibly gain by communicating anything less than your trust in your ?
Paul wrote to the church at Corinth: "I rejoice that in everything I have confidence in you" (2 Corinthians 7:16). But Corinth was a messed up place. Is Paul's statement a bunch of psychological hype? No, I don't think so. Paul's confidence was in the Lord, and he knew that the work God had begun in the Corinthian believers would be completed. Under the inspiration of God, he also knew that expressing belief and confidence in them was foundational for building them up.
Prayer:
Thank You, Lord, for the love and trust You have expressed to me which frees me to love and obey You. Help me encourage my by communicating my love, trust and respect to them. STEPPING DOWN

Stepping Down
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.
–Psalm 1:1
We all know Peter denied the Lord. Is that really when he backslid? In a sense, yes. But there were steps that led to it.
Peter’s first step to spiritual failure and denial was self-confidence. He said to the Lord, “ ‘I will not deny You’ ” (Matthew 26:35). In speaking these words, Peter not only revealed an unfounded confidence in himself, he also directly contradicted his Lord’s prediction that he would deny Him that night with the other disciples.
Peter’s second step down was the sin of prayerlessness. That was no doubt a direct result of his self-confidence. Jesus specifically instructed him to pray. But what did Peter do? He slept while Jesus prayed (see Luke 22:45).
Peter’s third step down was that he followed the Lord at a distance (see Luke 22:54). Now what does that mean? It means you still want to be a Christian, but you don’t really want to live the Christian life as it ought to be lived.
Peter’s next step down was warming himself at the enemy’s fire. He was in the wrong place, with the wrong people, about to do the wrong thing. The people you hang out with are going to have an influence in your life.
Then came Peter’s denial of his Lord. Peter had lost all sense of reality and seemingly all awareness of God.
And in the same way, when you lose that closeness with the Lord in fellowship and walking with Him, it’s only a matter of time until you will look for something or someone else to take His place.

WHAT CAUSED MY FIRE TO LOSE ITS GLOW

What Caused My Fire to Lose Its Glow?”
Melissa Taylor, Proverbs 31 Speaker Team Member
Key Verse:
Hebrews 13:5b, “…be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, ‘I will never leave you. I will never forsake you.’” (NLT)
Devotion:
If asked to describe my faith, for years I would’ve told you that I was on fire for the Lord. My relationship with God was intimate and joyful. I was passionate for His Word. I had a love for teaching my about God and His promises. Leading Bible studies and speaking at various events fueled me even more. No matter what my circumstances, I seemed to be able to draw peace and joy that could only come from knowing Jesus. You see, I trusted God completely. I totally believed His Word. When it was time to celebrate, I praised His Holy Name. When it was time to mourn, I trusted His plan. It wasn’t always easy, but I maintained a fire that, it seemed, could not be extinguished.
Why then, I had to ask God, did that fire I had in my heart suddenly appear to be decreasing? What was causing my fire to lose its glow? I didn’t love God any less. I hadn’t lost faith in His power. I still believed every bit of His Word. Why was I not “feeling” renewed, excited, joyful, and peaceful like I always had before? Was my fire burning out? The truth is that I was burned out.
Although I never thought my life or those around me were in my control, I was beginning to feel helpless in many roles of my life as a woman, mother, friend, , sister, etc. I was being pulled in so many directions. So many people needed me and relied on me. Out of the blue, unannounced, without my permission, and to my dismay, I felt completely numb inside. I did not know what to do. I was fine, but the circumstances around me overwhelmed me. Where I ordinarily relied on God for guidance through the tough times, I couldn’t “feel” His presence anymore. The worst part of this for me was that I couldn’t pinpoint why.
I thought I was doing all the right things. I searched my Bible for answers daily. I prayed and cried out to the Lord for help. I confided in my closest Christian friends. I was lost and felt abandoned by God without a concrete reason. My passion and fire had fizzled. My flame had reduced to a spark. I had grown stale and tired in my walk with the Lord. I was still going through the motions, but was still “feeling” no comfort. Even worse, I started listening to country music….not the fun, happy songs, but the ones that make you cry! I cried right along with them.
My husband and wanted to know where their wife and mom had gone. I did too. That summer became known as the “bummer summer.”
All my life, I’ve been an encourager and someone who naturally had a smile to share. I enjoyed my life with which God had blessed me. What happened to that person? Would I be like this forever? Thankfully, no.
I began to feel better over the next few months. I wish I could tell you the answer, the reason, or the way that the spark became a flame again, but I can’t. I hesitated to even write this story, because I didn’t have an answer to the question, “What caused my fire to lose its glow?” What I can tell you is that I never gave up on God. Even though I couldn’t feel His presence in my life, I knew He was there. I knew it because I knew His Word, and I believed it. Second Corinthians 5 says that we are to believe in what we can’t see. I also had to learn to believe in what I couldn’t feel.
My friends and family prayed for me during this time. I prayed for me too. When I look back, I think God may have been trying to teach me to slow down, rest in Him, allow Him to carry me for a while, and to totally trust Him.
In my recent conversations with God, I have asked Him to please keep my flame burning bright for Him. I want to possess a flame that is warm and inviting, much more than a mere spark. It reminds me of a song I used to sing at camp, “It only takes a spark to get a fire going…” Now my fire is indeed going again. God also gave me a new life verse through this experience. It is spoken by Jesus in Matthew 5:14-15. He said, “You are the light of the world ‒ like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see. Don’t hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all.” That’s exactly what I aim to do.
If you are in a place where you don’t “feel” God, do not give up. Do not despair or worry. Hang onto what you know is true, and that is the Word of God. Read it often and trust Him to remain faithful, loving, and in control just like it says. He will never abandon you, just as He never abandoned me. God is true to His Word no matter how we are feeling. He is true to His Word today, tomorrow and forever.
My Prayer for Today:
Oh Lord, today I want to thank You for Your Word, Your Love letter written for us. Give me the desire to read it, know it, and live it. Thank You that all You say is true, and that I never have to fear You leaving me to survive this life alone. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Application Steps:
If you are struggling to feel God near, write the verses down from this devotion on index cards. Place them around your home, car, office, and purse to remind you that God is still with you.
Ask a trusted friend to pray for you. Pray for them too.
Spend time with God every single day. Don’t let the busyness of life rob you of your time with the Lord. Give Him proper place in your life….first place!
Reflection Points:
Do I have a passion for God’s Word?
What am I doing to develop a passion for God’s Word?
Do I trust that everything that God says is true?
Is there someone in my life who could use some encouragement?
Power Verses:
Jeremiah 15:16, “Your words are what sustain me; they are food to my hungry soul. They bring joy to my sorrowing heart and delight me. How proud I am to bear your name, O Lord.” (TL
2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (NIV)
Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path.” (NLT)
James 4:8a, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” (NIV)
Hebrews 13:5b, “…be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, ‘I will never leave you. I will never forsake you.’” (NLT)

The Shield Of Faith

The Shield of Faith
Ephesians 6:14-17
The apostle Paul wrote about spiritual warfare so we might know our Enemy and
how to fight him. He compared the armor and weapons God has given us to the outfitting of a soldier: a helmet to protect our minds, a breastplate to cover our hearts, special shoes to help us stand firm, a belt of God’s truth to encircle us, the mighty sword of the Spirit, and the protective shield of faith.
Roman soldiers carried large rectangular shields, which covered the entire body. When facing an attack of flaming arrows, the warriors would stand shoulder to shoulder, with neighboring shields touching. Then, as the enemy’s arrows flew toward them, they would kneel in unison with their shields held above them, still in contact with the ones on either side. Nothing could pierce that defense.
This is a picture of how we are to fight when Satan sends flaming darts our way. They enter our life in the form of temptations, doubts, or anxieties – the Devil’s combatants shoot these silently and swiftly towards us in the hopes of finding a vulnerable spot. When we maintain our shield of faith in an upright position, the attack fails. However, if we should lower it or fail to stand together as the body of Christ, the missiles penetrate.
Our heavenly Father has provided all that we need to live on a battlefield.
He has secured the victory through Jesus Christ, canceled sin’s power over us, and given us armor to wear. Our part is to walk by faith, believing God moment by moment. Remember that your faith is your shield. Keep it in good order.

School for Dalit Forced to Close
A Gospel for Asia Bridge of Hope center in India's Uttar Pradesh state has been forced to temporarily shut down due to threats from Hindu extremists, reports a GFA field correspondent.
After several months of growing opposition, GFA leaders made the decision to close the education center on Monday, May 22. Members of two anti-Christian fundamentalist groups had incited residents of the community against GFA missionary Niranjan Das,* who established the center, by spreading rumors that he was working to forcibly convert people to Christianity.
Approximately 50 are enrolled in this Bridge of Hope center, the vast majority from Dalit families. Called "Untouchables" and considered a polluting influence on society by the Hindu-based caste system, these live in poverty with little opportunity of receiving a quality education. But through the Bridge of Hope program, they receive tuition and uniforms to attend local schools. Then each day they come to the Bridge of Hope Center for tutoring, Bible stories, songs and a nutritious meal.
"The Bridge of Hope center has not been running this week," states our correspondent. "The leaders have said that they may start it up again next week, but need to evaluate the situation at that time before making a decision."
This particular Bridge of Hope center has already been relocated once due to opposition from the local villagers.
Niranjan Das, himself from a Dalit background, began his work in this area in 1997. In addition to his ministry among the , he has planted five churches. One of these, with more than 250 in the congregation, has also been threatened.
"Last Sunday they still held the worship service," our correspondent reports, "but with police protection."
Gospel for Asia has more than 30,000 , most from Dalit families, enrolled in Bridge of Hope centers across South Asia.

NOT ALONE

Not Alone
Lord, You have searched me and known me.
–Psalm 139:1
Did you know that your shortcomings and failures come as no surprise to God? He is all-knowing. God knows everything about you. Jesus Christ knows you better than you know yourself. So it came as no shock to the Lord when Peter failed. But Jesus loved that man, just as He loves you.
Jesus even gave Peter a second chance. The disciples were sitting in the Upper Room when Jesus turned to Simon Peter and said something that must have shocked this man to the core: “ ‘Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you…’ ” (see Luke 22:31).
Can you imagine if He said that to you? There you are. Your heart is filled with love for Him. You can’t think of anyone you love more. And suddenly, Jesus turns to you and says, “Satan has been asking for you.”
But I love the next verse. Jesus said to Peter, “ ‘But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail’ ” (Luke 22:32). Think of that. Jesus was praying for Peter, just as He is praying for you. If you knew that Jesus was in this room right now, praying for you specifically by name, would that give you courage? Would that give you strength? Would that encourage you?
Let me say this. Right now Jesus Christ is praying for you. We know that because the Bible says, “Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25).
Just as surely as Jesus was standing in the gap for Peter, He is standing there for you. He knows you, and He is praying for you. You are not alone.

DO AS I DO

“Do as I Do”
Kristy Tolley, Graduate of She Speaks Conference
Key Verse:
1 Chronicles 29: 9a, “The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the Lord.” (NKJ)
Devotion:
I’m somewhat of a “germ-o-phobe”. I rejoiced when the grocery store installed sanitizing wipes by the carts (so I didn’t have to use my own!). And if I can use a public facility without touching a single thing, I’m a happy camper.
One day, as Peyton, my five-year-old , and I were leaving the Target restroom, she did something remarkable. Without a word, she reached for a paper towel, and proceeded to use it to open the door so she wouldn’t touch the handle. I was so proud. All of my “you never know how well other people wash their hands” speeches finally paid off.
I was reminded how really do emulate what they see ‒ good or bad. Whether it’s obsessive compulsive behaviors or other things we do in our lives, we are teachers ‒ plain and simple. Do our see us open our Bible very often? Do they hear us pray regularly? Do they see how we give our tithes and time back to God ‒ through our church and to others in need?
King David is an excellent example for us to look at. In 1 Chronicles 29, we see that David gave his personal fortune to be used in the building of the temple ‒ that was over and above everything he had already provided!
The leaders responded to their king’s actions (and to his challenge to them to do the same). “Then the leaders of families, the officers of the tribes of Israel, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials in charge of the king’s work gave willingly.” (verse 6)
As a result, the example set by King David and his leaders was very well received by the people. They witnessed firsthand abundant, sacrificial giving, and responded by outright praise and rejoicing. What a wonderful picture of how we should give, and how we should respond.
There have been plenty of times I’ve been a very poor example for my . Through my impatience and critical nature, I give them many examples of how not to act. But I can rejoice in the knowledge that my will also see when I get it right.
If we make a concerted effort to include our in our spiritual growth, we can be assured that the Lord will bless those efforts. For example, in the last couple of years I’ve become an “out loud” pray-er and praiser. Sometimes it’s a quick prayer of healing or comfort for victims of a car accident we pass. Other times it can be a loud praise song in the middle of my kitchen.
Just when I least expected it, my once again showed me she was watching. She was playing with her Barbie doll in the back seat of the car one day. “Hey look Mommy,” she called to me. I glanced back from the passenger’s side. She had her dolls arm up. “Oh, is Barbie waving to me?” I inquired. “No,” she replied, a little put out by my poor observation skills. “She’s praising.”
Thank You, Lord!
My Prayer for Today:
Lord, I pray that through my example, my can learn the importance of giving ourselves wholeheartedly to You. Help me to always remember to follow Your lead. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Application Steps:
Take a good look at your day-to-day activities and try to recognize ways you were a good example of Christ to your .
Ask the Lord to open your eyes to areas you may need improvement. Thank Him for it.
Praise the Lord or pray to Him out loud today ‒ especially if your are watching!
Who are some people in your life who have been wonderful examples for you to follow? Thank them for it.
Read your Bible and look closely at individuals who set examples for others.
Reflection Points:
What type of example to I set for my ?
How can I deliberately illustrate my faith in Jesus to my ?
Power Verses:
John 13:15, “For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.” (NKJ)
Philippians 3:17, “Join with others in following my example, brothers, and take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you.” (NIV)
Ephesians 5:8-10, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as of light (for the fruit of light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.” (NIV)
