    Derivative Dangers Threaten Global Markets

    CBNNews - Add up the gross domestic product for all the
    world and it comes to about $50 trillion.

    But now there's a wild trade going on between investors in
    something called "derivatives" that adds up to more than $700 trillion.

    Some people are worried this massive trade in derivatives is so big,
    so widespread, and in some cases, possibly so dangerous, it could
    seriously threaten the world's markets -- and your pocketbook.

    Phil Kerpen, a policy analyst at Americans for Prosperity, a group
    promoting free markets, said that if you go back a few centuries,
    you'll find the origin of derivatives was innocent enough:
    farmers wanting to protect the price for their crops.

    "A farmer in the field didn't want to risk it that when his crop came in,
    he wouldn't be able to get the price that he wants. He might go to a
    grocer and say 'let's agree that on this future date I'll sell to you for
    this price.' And that's what's called a forward contract," Kerpen said.

    And the grocer would agree because he knew he would get as
    many crops as he needed that year at a guaranteed price.

    So both the farmer and the grocer came out ahead: they already
    agreed on a certain price for a given amount of grain. So both were
    protected financially, even in case of a bad year for crops. Thanks
    to the contract, the grocer had his crops, and the farmer had his money.

    The contract itself was the "derivative" because it was derived from
    something else: the crops and the agreed-upon price for them.

    Not Assets, But Deals Made about Assets

    So derivatives aren't actually assets, but deals made about assets.

    And in many cases, they're just bets.

    "Let's say you're in the oil business and you're going to sell a lot
    more heating oil if it's a cold winter," Kerpen explalined. "You might
    want to bet against a cold winter so that if there isn't one, you'll make
    more money that way and it'll smooth out your risk."

    This hedging of risk is an insurance policy for both sides.

    "Maybe you wouldn't go into a business if you had to assume all the
    risk," Kerpen said. "But if you can spread it through some of these
    hedging mechanisms, suddenly some economic activities that wouldn't
    happen do happen. So there's a gain to the overall economy."

    Over time, the derivatives market exploded, from simple futures
    contracts for farmers to -- well, almost anything.

    From Farms to Stocks, Bonds, Commodities

    There are all kinds of financial assets in the world - including stocks,
    bonds, or commodities like gold, oil, grains and so on. Today you can
    bet on all sorts of derivatives for almost any of them: whether their value
    will go up or down, how the weather might affect them, and so on.

    And now -- with basically every financial firm, as well as regular businesses --
    involved in all sorts of derivatives on a daily basis -- they number hundreds
    f billions of dollars.

    Michael Mackenzie of the Financial Times points out there are frightening
    aspects to all this.

    "The derivative market: it does scare people because people say,
    'okay, these are huge amounts,'" Mackenzie said.

    Some of the biggest derivatives traders are not nearly as regulated
    as ordinary banks and brokerages. And they make much riskier bets.

    Mackenzie pointed out, "A hedge fund has much, much greater
    credit risk if you're trading with them."

    They also borrow unbelievably large amounts of money in the hopes
    of making more and more profits using high leverage.

    Derivatives More Complicated, More Lethal

    And over the decades, derivatives have grown more and more complicated.

    CBNNews - In the recent, Academy Award-winning film There Will Be Blood, one man's lust for oil - and the power and wealth

    that comes with it - eventually drives him mad.

    The timing of the film is ironic, as the United States' increasing reliance on foreign oil has some Americans questioning their

    government's sanity. President Bush says America is "addicted to oil"--and that it's time for a change.

    "America has got to change its habits," he told an audience at the International Renewable Energy Conference in March. "We've got to

    get off oil...that dependency presents a challenge to our national security. In 1985, 20 percent of America's oil came from abroad.

    Today that number is nearly 60 percent."

    Big Oil, Big Terror

    Much of that imported oil comes from OPEC, a group made up of 13 of the world's most petroleum-rich nations: Saudi Arabia, Libya,

    Kuwait, Iraq, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Angola, Indonesia, Nigeria, Qatar Venezuela and Ecuador.

    While these nations may have an abundance of oil, most of them lack democracy and human rights. Worse yet, some of them are

    state sponsors of terrorism -- and sworn enemies of the United States.

    "With only one or two exceptions, OPEC is effectively dictatorships and autocratic kingdoms," former C.I.A. director James Woolsey

    tells CBN News.

    Woolsey is a member of the Set America Free Coalition. The group highlights the national security and economic implications of

    America's dependence on foreign oil.

    "Ninety seven percent of our transportation is fueled by oil products of one sort or another," says Woolsey. "And two thirds of the

    world's proven reserves of conventional oil are in the Middle East, and about that share is also in the hands of OPEC."

    Gas and oil prices are currently at an all-time high - OPEC sets the market price. Woolsey says Saudi Arabia is using a chunk of its oil

    wealth to spread its brand of radical Wahhabi Islam worldwide.

    "The Saudis control about 90 percent of the world's Islamic institutions," he says. "And oil is the reason for that."

    Iran's big oil profits mean big money for that country's nuclear program and its terrorist proxies, Hezbollah and Hamas.

    Lately, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadenijad has been joined by Venezuela's Hugo Chavez in threatening to help drive oil prices

    up even further.

    Are Flex Fuels the Key?

    "The price of oil was $11 a barrel in 1999. It went to $22 a barrel in 2001 $50 a barrel in 2004. Now it's a $100 a barrel," author Robert

    Zubrin points out. "And Hugo Chavez and Ahmadenijad are already talking about raising it to 200 dollars a barrel. And they will do that if

    we don't have a competitive situation."

    Zubrin is the author of Energy Victory: Winning the War on Terror by Breaking Free of Oil. He says flex fuel vehicles are the way to

    break what he calls OPEC's energy monopoly.

    "Only fuel choice can defeat OPEC," he tells CBN News. "And it's flex fuel vehicles that will create fuel choice in the market."

    Flex fuel vehicles run on a mixture of gasoline and either ethanol or methanol. If you put 85 percent ethanol and, say, 15 percent

    gasoline into your car, your gas bills are obviously going to be much lower. The less gas your car requires, the less money goes to

    OPEC.

    One of the attractive aspects of ethanol and methanol is that they're alcohol fuels that are easily produced. Ethanol can be made from

    corn, grains, barley, wheat, rice and sugar cane. Corn is the main ingredient for ethanol in the United States.

    Ethanol and Food Prices

    But corn-based ethanol has plenty of critics. Critics have blamed the trend toward corn-based ethanol fuel for recent food shortages in

    Third World countries like Haiti. They say the increased demand for biofuels like ethanol that can be made from food has driven up

    food prices.

    Bush said last month that the increased production of corn-based ethanol is a good thing. He pointed out that the in 2005, the U.S.

    became the world's leading ethanol producer. He, too, is concerned that corn ethanol is driving up food prices.

    Zubrin disagrees.

    "The retail price of corn, as well as all other food commodities, is being driven up an average of 4 percent by increased fuel prices,

    which are up 40 percent this year, as well as increased demand from China and India," says Zubrin.

    "The increased fuel prices affect retail food prices by increasing the price of production , transport, wages, and packaging, which are

    the majority of cost of retail food," he says.

    There are other flex-fuel options as well, like methanol. It can be made from any kind of biomass--like plants, crops, wood and

    agricultural waste, as well as coal, natural gas and even urban trash.

    According to Zubrin, these types of flex fuels could help America become energy independent.

    "The U.S. Congress could destroy the oil cartel with the stroke of a pen simply by passing a law mandating that all new cars sold in the

    U.S.-- not made, sold - be flex fueled," he says. "That it's able to run either on alcohol or gasoline."

    He says such legislation would force gasoline to compete against flex fuels at the pump.

    "What this would do is put 50 million cars on the road in the United States within three years capable of running on alcohol," he states.

    "If we made it the American standard that to sell a car here it has to be flex-fueled, that means all the foreign carmakers would switch

    their cars over to flex fuel.and gasoline would be forced to compete at the pump against alcohol not only in Iowa, but in Argentina and

    Kenya and Poland: everywhere."

    New Flex Automobiles

    Here in the U.S., Detroit's Big Three automakers are producing 24 different models of flex fuel cars this year. Still, flex fuel cars make

    up only about 3 percent of the new car market.

    "The reason why you can't find an ethanol pump is that there aren't any cars," says Zubrin. "At the gas station, if you have three pumps,

    you're not going to dedicate them to a type of fuel that only 3 percent of the cars use.

    That would change if Congress passed a flex fuel mandate. But some libertarian and conservative groups strongly oppose any

    government involvement in the energy sector.

    "The reason we subsidize ethanol is not because of some economic calculation. It's because politicians are in the business of buying

    votes. And a set of votes they would dearly love to buy are votes from farm states like Iowa and Ohio and Pennsylvania and Michigan

    and Minnesota," Policy Analyst Jerry Taylor of the free-market Cato Institute told CBN News last year.

    There's also been concern from environmental groups that as more land is cleared to make room for crops needed to make flex fuels,

    deforestation will occur in places like Brazil,

    Zubrin argues that the increased demand for biofuels will actually be a boost to the economies of Third World countries that can easily

    produce them.

    Some experts say there could eventually be other options as well, like hydrogen-based cars.

    But the debate continues over how best to handle America's energy needs in a hostile world.

    "If we should be wondering who should be paying for, let's say, little Pakistani boys to go to madrassahs to be taught to be suicide

    bombers," suggests Woolsey. "If you really wonder about that, move your rearview mirror a few inches before you get out to charge

    your gasoline and look into your own eyes. And now you know. You and I are paying for it.

    'Temple in Waiting' Prepared in Jerusalem

    CWN. org - The Temple Mount in Jerusalem is one of the most sacred places on earth, and one of the most contested.

    For Jews, it's the place where the Holy Temple once stood.

    Today Muslims control the Temple Mount and Jews are forbidden to worship there. But that hasn't stopped some people from making plans to build the next temple.

    Everyday, three times a day, Jews recite this prayer: "May it be your will that the temple be speedily rebuilt in our own time."

    It's a prayer they've prayed for almost 2,000 years. But today, Jews here in Jerusalem are doing more than just praying.

    Just a few steps away from the western wall, rabbis and craftsmen are building what they call a "temple in waiting."

    Chaim Richman is a director at the Temple Institute in Jerusalem.

    "The Temple Institute is actively engaged in the research and preparation of the resumption of service in the holy temple to the extent of actually preparing operational blueprints for the construction of the temple according to the most modern standards," he said.

    This menorah is just one of several vessels being created for the next temple. It's covered with 95 pounds of pure gold and has a price tag of $2 million.

    Piece by piece, the third temple is taking shape, with priest's garments, vessels of copper, gold, and silver, and a new generation of Levite priests specially trained for temple service.

    "We have enough in place now to resume divine service and to build the temple," Richman said. "But obviously, a lot of things have to happen in order for this to happen."

    Richman isn't the only one who's ready to rebuild.

    Some 3,000 years after King Solomon built the first Jewish temple, another Solomon is laying the foundations for the third one.

    Gershon Solomon leads a group called The Temple Mount Faithful.

    "From the womb of my mother, I have a task and a mission in my life, which is connected with the rebirth of Israel," he said.

    The group commissioned these cornerstones for the third temple. The six-ton stones were consecrated with water from the biblical pool of Siloam and cut with diamonds.



    For several years, Solomon and his followers tried to place the stones on the Temple Mount, and every year they were stopped by Israeli police.

    "Unfortunately, weakness of the Israeli leadership did not allow us to bring the cornerstones to the right place," Solomon said. "The end-time temple should be built on the same location as the first and the second temple."

    But that location is already occupied. The holiest site for Jews is also the third holiest site for Muslims.

    "The issue of the Temple, it's so sensitive," Yousef Natsheh of the Palestnian Antiquities Authority explained. "It's not an undeniable fact; it's theories. The political situation, the misunderstanding, the mistrust distorted all the facts.

    Muslim law forbids archaeologists from digging on the Temple Mount, so instead, Gabriel Barkay is digging through its trash.

    "We have here the entire history of the Temple Mount," he said.

    He and his team are sifting through truckloads of debris, unearthed by bulldozers and discarded by Muslim authorities.

    Among their finds: an arrowhead from the Nabylonian invasion in 586 B.C. and a 2,400-year-old coin, the oldest ever minted in Jerusalem.

    "A beautiful piece, tiny silver piece with an owl and the Hebrew inscription 'Yehud' which is the Aramaic name of Judea," Barkay said.

    Some of the most dramatic traces of temple life have been unearthed here at the western wall.

    On the walls, you can still see the marks from the fires that destroyed the temple in 70 A.D. Overturned stones are still lying where they were thrown from the top of the Temple Mount by the armies of Rome.

    On one stone is a Hebrew inscription: "To the place of trumpeting."

    Even more intriguing is the part of the western wall that's still underground.

    Dan Bahat spent 40 years excavating the tunnels around the Temple Mount, and he says the most compelling case for the temple is yet to be discovered.

    "I believe that behind this stone is a large arch which forms a storehouse, which stored all the treasures of the temple," he said. "In the future, when it will be possible to dig, maybe we'll get to there."

    But Bahat's interest in the temple is strictly in its past, not in its future.

    "There is no chance whatsoever for the third temple. The third temple will be when the Messiah comes," he said. "Both Jews and Christians are waiting for him so when he comes, let us see what happens. It won't happen before."

    12 Questions to Ask Yourself About Someone You Might Date

    CBNcom ‒ When considering a relationship with someone it is important to consider that person's spiritual beliefs as well as the way they view life and how they treat others. Authors Lee and Leslie Strobel say the following questions are important to consider before you being a dating relationship.

    1. Can he describe a specific time or era during which he received Christ's gift of eternal life? If he can't pinpoint the time of his conversion, or at least the time frame in which it occurred, then it might not have ever happened. Listen carefully when he talks about his faith. Is he counting on his good deeds, religious rituals, and winning smile to get to heaven, or does he describe coming to the point of recognizing his sinfulness, turning from his own path in life, and receiving Christ as his forgiver and leader? He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy, says Titus 3:5.

    2. When he talks about the future, is there room for God? Or does he envision a future of his own making? Does he talk about seeking God's direction for his life? Does he have plans to serve God and the church in some way? Is he focused on the achievement of temporal success or eternal significance? Does he want to make a difference in the world for Christ? "But one thing I do," said the apostle Paul. Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

    3.Is he willing to postpone immediate gratification so that greater satisfaction can come in the future? Does he live out the biblical teaching that sacrifice and struggle often are necessary to achieve greater long-term goals? Or does he relentlessly pursue short-term pleasure at the expense of long-term consequences? "Healthy religion calls for us to forsake self-indulgent, self-centered living and to commit instead to purity, love, giving, unselfishness, discipline, and sometimes uncomfortable lifestyles," Collins said. "This is not intended to steal away our joy and make life miserable. In contrast, a life of devotion brings inner peace, fulfillment, and the promise of better things to come in the future."

    4. What is his attitude toward other people? Does he use others merely as tools to get what he wants, or does he genuinely care about other people? Is he polite because his parents taught him good manners, or because he sincerely respects others? How does he treat the less fortunate in our society? Does he care about the needy? Does he have a sense of social justice that makes him want to see conditions for the poor improved, or is he uncaring or even cynical about those who have less than he does? He who mocks the poor, says Proverbs 17:5, shows contempt for their Maker.

    5. Does he exhibit the traits of Jesus? Does he forgive those who hurt him or does he enjoy nursing a grudge and plotting revenge? Is he generous toward others? Does he stand up for what's right? Does he care about the poor and the downtrodden? My friend Gary Collins, a Christian psychologist, put it this way: "The Bible knows nothing of true Christians who are miserly, spiteful, habitually unforgiving, self-righteous, or arrogant. Nobody is perfect and we are all tempted to sin, but the true Christ-follower shows signs of becoming more like the master."

    6. Who does he spend his time with? Birds of a feather do tend to flock together. You can learn a lot about his discernment and what he values by looking at who he shares his time with. Is he constantly pulled toward the "in-crowd" whose main activities would be anything but pleasing to God, or does he seek relationships with Christians who can encourage him to grow in his faith and lovingly hold him accountable? Do not be misled, says 1 Corinthians 15:33, Bad company corrupts good character.

    7. Does he care about bringing the Gospel to those who haven't heard it? People whose hearts have been transformed by Christ feel motivated to share their faith with others. But someone who's a Christian in name only sees no reason to bring the message of Jesus to those who haven't heard it. As one ancient saint said: "I doubt the salvation of anyone who doesn't care about the salvation of his neighbor." That doesn't mean he has to be Billy Graham, but it does mean he prays for lost friends and takes advantage of opportunities to engage them in spiritual conversations so ho might be able to tell them about Christ.

    8. Is he honest about the little things in life? Integrity means there's a consistency between a person's beliefs and behavior or between his character and creed. Does he have a reputation for being trustworthy, or is he known for trying to cleverly cut ethical corners? One woman said her boyfriend's character was revealed when a waiter accidentally gave them the bill for another table. Instead of pointing out the error, he tried to quickly pay the lesser amount and leave - until she stopped him. "There is no such thing as a minor lapse of integrity," said business guru Tom Peters. Seemingly small acts of dishonesty often reveal the true state of a person's heart. The godly walk with integrity, says Proverbs 20.

    9. Through what lenses does he see the world? We all view life through one kind of lens or another. "The term worldview may sound abstract or philosophical ... but actually a person's worldview is intensely practical," said Charles Colson. "It is simply the sum total of our beliefs about the world, the 'big picture' that directs our daily decisions and actions... Genuine Christianity is a way of seeing and comprehending all reality." Does this individual see an artificial separation between his spiritual life and the rest of his existence, or is his faith integrated into all areas of living? Does he recognize and apply the Bible as the foundation for his whole life?

    10. Does he take responsibility for his actions? Is he quick to candidly admit when he has made a mistake or does he try to justify his actions even when they were clearly wrong? Does he gloss over his own sinfulness or blame others for things he did? "Healthy believers don't try to pass the buck, pin the blame on somebody else, or refuse to acknowledge our actions," Collins said. Instead, they "admit errors and sinfulness, seek forgiveness from God and from others who might have been harmed, make restitution when possible, and go on - determined not to let a similar situation happen again."

    11. Does he possess humility? Jesus spoke out forcefully against pride, and Micah 6:8 says that true spirituality involves walking humbly with God. Does this individual always have to be right? Does he hog credit or generously praise the contributions of others? Does he constantly put himself first and think he knows better than everyone else? "[Humility] is not a false piety that denies the strengths God has given," Collins said. "It does not involve putting ourselves down and wallowing in insecurity or self-pity. Humility is a quiet recognition that all we have and are comes from God. It is an attitude that is open to new insights and has little concern about inflating our ego or enhancing our image."

    12. What does he choose to feed his mind? What kind of books does he read, music does he listen to, video games does he play, internet sites does he visit, and movies does he watch? Philippians 4:8 says, Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things. What a person feeds his mind is what he will eventually become. As Paul urged: Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

    This checklist isn't intended to be rigidly applied. While all Christians are continually growing to become more like Jesus, this is a process that varies in pace from individual to individual and will never be completed this side of heaven. Perhaps these questions have even raised concerns about some areas of your own life that you need to address before God. In any event, raising these issues can help us diagnose the general condition of the other person's Christian life. Don't flinch from being honest as you seek answers. Keep in mind that self-interest -- such as romantic feelings toward the other person -- can fog otherwise clear thinking.

    Surprising many Republican insiders, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is at the top of the vice presidential prospect list for John McCain. But lack of personal chemistry could derail the pick.

    “Romney as favorite” is the hot buzz in Republican circles, and top party advisers said the case is compelling.

    Campaign insiders say McCain plans to name his running mate very shortly after Barack Obama does, as part of what one campaign planner called a “bounce-mitigation strategy.”

    The Democratic convention is in late August, a week ahead of the Republican convention. That means McCain can size up the opposing ticket before locking in his own.

    The McCain campaign declined to comment, saying McCain has made it clear they are not to discuss the matter.

    One of the chief reasons the Massachusetts governor is looking so attractive is his ability to raise huge amounts of money quickly through his former business partners and from fellow members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Mormons.

    McCain sources tell Politico that they believe Romney could raise $50 million in 60 days. One close Romney adviser said it could even be $60 million.

    Romney’s other advantages, according to people involved in McCain’s screening process:

    – Squeaky-clean and fully vetted by the national media.

    – Has presidential looks and bearing and immediately would be a strong campaigner who could be trusted to stay on message.

    – Family’s Michigan roots would help in a swing state that went Democratic in 2004.

    But there’s one big problem: Despite the buddy-picture choreography of a McCain-Romney campaign swing, McCain remains less than enamored with Romney.

    And it’s not just the candidate. Some of McCain’s closest confidants evince little enthusiasm for Romney, feelings that are owed in part to lingering bad blood from the GOP primary, a genuine skepticism that such a conventional pick could bolster the ticket in a grim year for the GOP and concerns about whether his Mormon faith could imperil McCain in Southern states that Obama hopes to put into play.

    McCain sources also say he’ll pick his vice presidential candidate based more on ability to govern than ability to help in the election.

    So two other names are in the top tier:

    – Rob Portman, a former congressman from Ohio, member of House leadership, U.S. Trade Ambassador and White House budget director.

    – Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), who would delight conservatives and is at the top of the list of the party’s prospects for the presidential race in 2012 or 2016. He was described to Politico by a McCain confidant as a possible “compromise” if the senator can’t stomach picking Romney.

    Then there’s a second tier of candidates who are less likely, but possible: former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, who dropped out of the top tier because of recent revelations about his lobbying; Florida Gov. Charlie Crist; Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty; and Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who is one of McCain’s most energetic and successful fundraisers.

    Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is frequently included in veep news stories but was not mentioned by McCain insiders. Their view is that his youth would accentuate, not mitigate, the age issue.

    Especially if McCain is far behind later this summer, he could do something truly unorthodox like pick his strong supporter Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.), who was the Democrats’ vice presidential candidate back in 2000.

    Party leaders don’t expect that. But McCain remains, after all, a maverick.

    UNITED STATES MAP - Short But Good!

    A father wanted to read a magazine but was being bothered by his little
    girl, Shelby. She wanted to know what the United States looked like.
    Finally, he tore a sheet out of his new magazine on which was printed
    the map of the country.

    Tearing it into small pieces, he gave it to Shelby and said, "Go into
    the other room and see if you can put this together. This will show you
    our whole country today."

    After a few minutes, Shelby return to her Dad and handed him the map,
    correctly fitted and taped together. The fat her was surprised and asked
    how she had finished so quickly. "Oh," she said, "on the other side of
    the paper is a picture of Jesus. When I got all of Jesus back where He
    belonged, then our country just came together."

    This is my opinion:

    Call for a flat tax rate of only 10%, with

    no deductions, and set a poverty line that

    would exclude the poor. Do away with all

    the paper explanation booklets and the admin-

    istration for the IRS, and this debt would be

    paid for in one year with bunches leftover to

    clear up Social Security, set up finances for

    all military, firemen, and police.

    HOW DOES THAT SOUND ? ? ?

    Better that the 70-90%

    that is being paid and making no difference in

    anything.
