"I Kissed a Girl and I liked It" The Sad Truth behind that song

I attended a block party in my family's neighborhood last weekend. I spent the afternoon making and serving cotton candy to . In the closed off street, there were arts and crafts, dunk booths and all sorts of activities for the . They were having a ball running up and down and trying everything out. All the while a DJ played music for the block to listen to.

How sad I became when I heard some girls, who were most likely 11 to 13 years old, singing Katy Perry's hit song "I Kissed a Girl and I liked it." This song is currently #1 in the US, Canada and the UK. It's theme and message is obvious as it celebrates young women's "Experimentation" with homosexual acts with their friends.

The song has led to a new "dance move" of girls kissing at clubs and parties to excite guys when the song is played. Just further showing the moral degradation in our society through pop culture. All the while, many parents are either clueless, too submissive to their to to keep that music out of their home, or singing along with them.

As I have warned in many threads, and young adults are directly influenced by music. They model themselves after artists, they develop their own personalities around the music they listen to (as in being a rebel or acting gangsta or "thugged out"). It's not hip to allow filth into your home. The Bible is clear that we are to be from the world but not of the world. And to be separate:

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. 2 Corinthians 6:17.

So what's the sad truth here? Katy Perry started her career as a Contemporary Christian artist. Yes, her self-titled album "Katy Hudson" was a Christian album. Here is an article about it.

Katy Perry, Christian recording artist?

You call her Katy Perry, we call her Katy Hudson, the singer who at the tender age of 16 released her self-titled debut album in the Christian marketplace.

You got it. Katy Perry, whose single "I Kissed A Girl" is tearing up the Billboard charts, got her start in the Christian industry.

The of two conservative preachers, Katy Hudson signed with Red Hill Records and in 2001 released an album filled with Christian pop/rock radio-friendly songs. She even toured with Phil Joel.

Red Hill Records folded. Somewhere along the way changed her name to Katy Perry, whether to avoid confusion with actress Kate Hudson or to shed her Christian association, I don't know, but in 2004 she went on to become an in-house vocalist for the production team, The Matrix, whose credits include Avril Lavigne and Britney Spears.

A series of typical industry ups and downs eventually led her to sign with Capital Records in 2007, and she was on her way. Last year she released the single "Ur So Gay," which garnered her attention, but it's the recent "I Kissed A Girl" that's got her at the top of the Billboard charts. Her album, One Of The Boys, released last week.

This is definitely not a Christian album, although they lyrics to the song, "Lost," allude to a spiritual searching:

"Have you ever been so lost
Known the way and still so lost ...
My mother says I should come back home but
Can't find the way cause the way is gone
So if I pray am I just sending words into outer space"

So where did Katy Hudson/Perry switch paths?

Looking back, her 2001 debut wasn't a "Jesus is my boyfriend" album; the lyrics were genuine and the album was a legitimate Christian release. By all accounts, Hudson had a promising career as a Christian artist.

But was she a legitimate Christian artist? In 2004, at the age of 19, she told Blender Magazine that during her adolescence, she wasn't "your typical Christian. I've done a lot of bad things. Use your imagination."

It's a curious thing, that a girl who was obviously engaging in rebellious behavior got a Christian record deal in the first place. Either she's a great actress or a lot of people in the industry looked the other way.

Should we have expected more from Katy Hudson, just because her parents were preachers and she grew up in the church? And should we even be using teens as spiritual role models - and let's face it, Christian artists are Christian role models - when often they really haven't yet begun to understand their own faith?

The Song

This hit single is basically about a girl at a party who got a little drunk and kissed a girl, and she liked it. We could take two approaches to this song. We could merely point out that the Bible says homosexuality is wrong and getting drunk is wrong, quote some Bible passages, and pack the song away into a neat little "not Christian" box. Alternatively, we could take some time and look at this song a little more deeply and find what truth is resonating with people enough to make this song a blockbuster.

Let's choose option two, just for fun. Now it's well-known that the inspiration for many of Katy Perry's songs come from her life, and it's quite possible she is describing one of her experiences here. The girl in the song has a boyfriend and gets a little drunk at a party and fools around at a party. Why?

Lyric: "It's not what, I'm used to / Just wanna try you on / I'm curious for you / Caught my attention"

Experimentation is hardly new, but the social taboos against sex that were beaten down so strongly during the sexual revolution of the 60s and 70s are breaking apart completely now. The new cool is to be "try-sexual," meaning you are willing to try anything. Teenagers are curious. Why shouldn't they try out new things? Katy Perry tells us what happened next in the chorus of her song:

Lyric:
I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chapstick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it

The girl in the song tries kissing another girl ... and she LIKES it. Now she is in a predicament. "It felt so wrong / It felt so right." Remember that Katy Perry grew up in a Christian home. The idea that homosexuality might be enjoyable probably was not even on her radar.

So when the girl in the song enjoys kissing another girl, she is conflicted. She's thinking, "I've been taught it is wrong and bad, but it feels good and right. Which is it? Do I trust my own feelings or everyone else?" Unfortunately, it looks like Katy Perry decided to trust herself.

So what is the truth of this song that speaks to Christians? We need to admit that, biologically speaking, sex is sex. It doesn't matter if it is heterosexual or homosexual, with someone else or by yourself, in a marriage relationship or not, sex is still pleasurable. If sex wasn't fun except in a marriage relationship, then and homosexuality and masturbation would not have been around so long. Why should the church be afraid to admit that sin is fun, at least in the short term?

Sex outside of marriage is wrong because God said so and He said so in love, not out of a desire to give meaningless rules. So we have to trust the God who made the world that He knows the world and us better than we do. Do you think that is what Paul is talking about here?

"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is -- his good, pleasing and perfect will." (Romans 12:2)

Didn't Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore start out as Christian singers, too? They've gone 'Hollywood'. This girl is one more kid who got seduced by the entertainment world. Assuming she was saved to begin with. But who knows if she really was?

I have had to battle this spirit with my daughters after they heard this song in their dad's home. I have had to battle this spirit from his home before this so I don't hold the song responsible..but him. I was furious that he would allow them to listen to this filth. I discussed it in detail with my daughters and one night took them skating and this song was played. I made them "sit out" on the song and was vocal about how we were not going to participate. I also prayed over the other youth that the spirit of lesbianism and perversion would not affect them. One battle won, but now God just smite that song...perhaps a public apology or recant? Convict Father in JESUS MIGHTY NAME...protect the kids from this wicked lifestyle.

Let's keep in mind satan was the chief musician...music can be cunning...even love songs can bring about a sense of idolatry toward mates, too much longing for a mate, even depression if you aren't married..

"Try the spirits" for there are even Christian songs that are not in the right spirit and have negative professions.

Keep in mind as a man speaks so is he..songs are sneaky professions.

Jesus is the way, the truth and the life...

Last night I was watching a Video with someone that you can watch right on your computer screen called STRANGE FIRE, and you just wouldnt believe it. There is shown Elton John dressed completely in a dress, as a woman singing about how its "alright" to have sex with someone of the same sex.

And if that werent enough, there is shown and played so you can hear it, a song that sings praises to LUCIFER right in a Christian Church. I couldnt believe it.

Its just plain sickening. People really do need to understand what is being propagated upon Christianity today and passed off as being "godly".
This one VERY POPULAR "Christian" singer, hes doing nothing more than promoting witchcraft, with rune writings on his albums, etc.

If you want to watch this Video you can go to my post about it here, to find out how to watch it online:

Hey Racefan. Indeed, it certainly seems like the days of Noah. It's sad that kids are bombarded with songs like this. God bless.

That's a great point. It just seems that Hollywood's allure to be corrupt and market yourself as a sexpot teen is too strong for these girls. This is why I think it's important to know the theology of the Christian artists we listen to. Anyone can record a song praising Jesus. But what do they really believe??

Hey JC,

Although I know you think you are referring to an old term for "matchstick" I do not think we should use ANY offensive terms for gays at all. Even if we feel they are sinning, we still need to have love and compassion for them as Jesus instructed. They should get our respect and love as proof our Christlike spirit. Just as Jesus said, it's easy to love our family and friends. but compassion for those we are not close to is what shows we are truly being obedient to The Lord. God bless.
