It is well, it is well with my soul


One of the most moving hymns ever written. Did you know the story behind it? Here it is:

On October 8, 1871, as Horatio Spafford and his wife Anna were grieving over the death of their , the Great Chicago Fire swept through the city. Horatio was a prominent lawyer in Chicago and had invested heavily in the city's real estate, and the fire destroyed almost everything he owned.

Two years later, in 1873, Spafford decided his family should take a holiday somewhere in Europe, and chose England knowing that his friend D. L. Moody would be preaching there in the fall. Delayed because of business, he sent ahead of him his family: his wife Anna, and his four remaining , daughters Tanetta, Maggie, Annie and Bessie.

On November 21, 1873, while crossing the Atlantic on the S.S. Ville Du Havre, their ship was struck by an iron sailing vessel and two hundred and twenty six people lost their lives, including all four of Spafford's daughters. Somehow his wife, Anna, survived. On arriving in England, she sent a telegram to Spafford beginning "Saved alone."

Spafford then himself took a ship to England, going past the place where his daughters had died. According to Bertha Spafford, a born after the tragedy, the hymn was written in mid-Atlantic as Spafford's vessel passed near the location of the tragedy.

With the story behind the hymn in mind, read the words:

I've always loved this hymn. What a strong faith that enabled him to write it so beautifully.

Thought of you today Jim in church as Pastor told that story and we sang this Hymn as one of our last songs in church today.

He also told the story, actually showed a short film of 2 families from Radcliff, Kentucky whose lives were changed and brought together by the Youth Group bus trip drunk driving crash/fire/deaths on their way home from a day trip to Kings Island. Where Lee Williams lost his wife Joy and 2 daughters Kristen and Robin that day and Dottie Pearman lost her husband John and her daughter Christy was badly burned on her arms and shoulders but survived and how God brought Dottie and Lee together now as they are married. Brought together by such a tragedy.

Such stories that still have my throat aching with feeling their loss and pain and how they would have never survived it all had they not been so strong in their faith as they all know they will be reunited together one day and at how blessed that God has brought them together until that day.

Wow, tears still forming - what a day! A powerful message about life's valley's and how no one is immune to them.

Being a Christian means you will be a victor not a victim. Valley's are temporary, they don't last. It's what you do to get thru those valley's is what makes the difference!

God never abandons us......in good times or in bad.

All is well with my soul, Thank You Lord, that all is well with my soul!!
