- LIVE A LIFE THAT MATTERS -

~ Live A Life That Matters ~

Ready or not,
someday it will all come to an end.

There will be no more sunrises,
no minutes, hours or days.

All the things you collected,
whether treasured or forgotten,
will pass to someone else.

Your wealth,
fame and temporal power
will shrivel to irrelevance.

It will not matter what you owned
or what you were owed.

Your grudges, resentments, frustrations,
and jealousies will finally disappear.

So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans,
and to-do lists will expire.

The wins and losses
that once seemed so important
will fade away.

It won't matter where you came from,
or on what side of the tracks you lived,
at the end.

It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant.

Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.

So what will matter?
How will the value of your days be measured?

What will matter is not what you bought,
but what you built;
not what you got,
but what you gave?

What will matter is not your success,
but your significance.

What will matter is not what you learned,
but what you taught.

What will matter is every act of integrity,
compassion,
courage or sacrifice that enriched,
empowered or encouraged others
to emulate your example.

What will matter is not your competence,
but your character.

What will matter is not how many people you knew,
but how many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone.

What will matter is not your memories,
but the memories that live in those who loved you.

What will matter is how long you will be remembered,
by whom and for what.

Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident.
It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice.

Choose to live a life that matters.

At my Mom's funeral, years past, the church in her hometown in Florida was overflowing with people who came to show their last respects. My Mom was a school teacher, Sunday school teacher in St John Missionary Baptist Church. She did home visits to all the homes of her 0-3rd grade students, thus becoming an integral part of their lives. Sometimes , she would even leave them with books, school supplies, and even clothing she had collected. She was frequently called upon to speak at various churches throughout our community, for she had a gift of writing , poetry, and inspiring others. I recall , as a child and teen, her sending me to deliver plates of food to neighbors who were elderly or ill, or to dress their wounds or give them Insulin injections. She would also send me to their homes to ask if I could assist them in any way with ironing ,cooking, errands, etc. My siblings and I were never allowed to accept money from them, because we were doing what "God expects of all Christians," my Mom would remind us. "You must show yourself worthy of all the blessings God has bestowed upon you, by giving service to others, for it is what you give of yourself to others that truly counts!" In her retirement, she worked at The Center for the Aged, incharge of the local center which planned activities for the elderly, and delivered meals to those homebound.
At my Mom's funeral, the pastor asked that everyone stand whose life had been impacted by my mother. As I looked around the congregation, I did not see a single child or adult seated. Everyone stood and applauded her life, and many asked to speak on how she had impacted them, even they were not scheduled to speak. Many were humorous stories, and the funeral became a glorious celebration of her life!.
My heart overflowed with tears of joy that this woman they were speaking of , whose earthly body rested , smiling serenely in the casket before us, was actually my mother! I was so overwhelmed with love! I could only thank GOD for her life of service to others. I also wanted to thank every face there for what they had also given her,not materially, but in their love for her.

You are right! All things shall pass away, but it is what we do for God, in our service to others, that truly counts. We can read the Bibles 10 times per day. We can pray like the angels, but if we have not charity for our fellow man.....then we have nothing. All those material things which we amass through our lift-times are of naught, and shall pass away!

Blessings to you, my dear, for your wonderful post.

Greater is He who is within me, than He who is within the world.
