Blessed Beyond Measure

It's been a while since I have been able to get online but I did survive Hurricane Ike. Despite all of our preparations, I don't think anyone was ready for weeks without electricity!!

My home was sparred any damage and damage to my parents' home was minimal. My office was not so lucky. The roof was peeled away from the 12th floor. Despite this, we have been working the best we can there. My office is on the 11th floor. Nearly every floor sustained damage.

The walls are slowly being put back up. I think someone could make a fortune if they made drywall in a mint flavor. At least it would be a bit easier breathing it all.

We are working basically with bandaids and I have been putting in a ton of OT in recent weeks. I hope in the next few weeks we will get back to normal before we have to start working on year end.

All in all, this whole ordeal has made me very grateful for many things I used to take for granted.... like being able to flush the toilet, air conditioning, electricity, mosquito spray, easy access to gasoline and fresh foods, etc. etc.

And while the OT has left me exhausted, I have been able to pay off my new frig with the money I made on my last check.

God has blessed me like crazy. He kept my family safe during the hurricane and has continued to provide for our needs.

We never went hungry, had to stand in lines for food, or experience some of the trials others did during the aftermath of the hurricane.

Praise God!!

He even gave us a few moments of comic relief in the midst of it all.

For example, I had ventured to a local dollar store to find clothespins since we were without electric for the washer and dryer. I found one open that had a generator. While I was there, a large burly man came in. He was big, sweaty and covered with tattoos. The kind of guy you would want on your side in a fight!

In a husky voice, he asked the cashier if the store had any old fashioned telephones that didn't need electricity. The girl shyly responded that they had one left but she didn't think he would want it.

He said he didn't care but he needed a standard non-electric phone. The salesgirl retrieved the last such phone in the store... a pink Disney princess phone with the faces of Snow White, Cinderella and some other Disney heroines upon it.

He took one look at that pink little girl phone and responded in his gruff gravely voice, "Cute, I'll take it."

He paid his money and left. The salesgirl and I about died laughing when he left at the though of that big brute using his pink Disney princess phone.

Yep, blessed beyond measure, indeed!!

Bill, I am so glad that Ike left y'all alone this time around. I still have to put the pictures back on my walls here at my home. I ended up staying at my parent's home in the subdivision across the street from my subdivision since they at least had a generator so we could run a fan and the frig. Plus they have a propane stove so we could cook as well. I cannot even express how good it is to be back home. I love my parents deeply and appreciate all they do for us but it's good to be home in sooooo many ways!! Thanks for your prayers! Praise God indeed. There are so many who were wiped out by this storm! I am so undeserving but so incredibly blessed!

It's wonderful to see you as well Marilyn! I definitely have some stories from all of this. It's strange how such trials will bring out both the good, bad and the ugly in people but I saw a lot more good than bad and ugly through this whole thing. God bless you!

Robin, thank you so very much for your prayers!! God certainly heard and answered them because we have been so blessed here despite the storm and devastation. I hope I am back on for good too (as opposed to being back on for bad! LOL ). Love you too girl!! Are you sure you don't want to come back to Texas? LOL

Hi, welcome back in one piece! (Band-aids excluded, of course!)
You surely were lucky that your office wasn't on the 13th floor! LOL! Or would you have preferred that? What are this buildings made of, cardboard? It took a while before I got what you meant with OT... and you didn't mention any NT either... J/K as usual!

At least the phone line worked... I thought it was dead too except for wireless connection! But then how could one charge the batteries without electricity? I think you have to invest in some NASA "winding-up" (?) gadgets. (if there's that word!)

One thing you'll have to tell us, is how did you manage to make your daily coffee?? A pot on a fire???

Btw, have great weekend!!

Thanks Beedee! It's good to see you again as well. God is good and we are slowly seeing some normalcy here again. Praise God for that and so many other blessings!

Thanks! My mom has propane so we were still able to cook. We used an old campfire pot to make coffee with and did it sorta like the cowboys used to or if you ever went camping! See, I told you I was blessed!

I have so appreciated the prayers!! I am sure that God heard every single one of them and that made a big difference in our survival through all of this. I think camping is more fun than what we did because you can choose to go camping, wait for cooler weather, and make S'mores... Hurricanes are sorta like forced camping without the S'mores but with the mosquitoes. Go figure that with 100 mph winds, we'd still have Skeeters... ahhh the state bird of Texas! LOL
Thanks for everything! Love ya, Corrie

I guess God gave me a sense of humor as part of my survival skills to get through life. What's that old saying about when life hands you lemons... I think we have to laugh at the small things and find small victories to celebrate because let's face it, the odds of winning the lottery are slim and even that doesn't guarrantee happiness. Only we can choose to be happy and content in our lives.
