Holy Guacamole Batman!

A few days ago I responded to Noah's post on whether the use of OMG is acceptable for Christians. I had replied that I tend to use the word Sheesh instead.

Noah felt this was just another version of Jesus. I had never heard that before. I always thought it was just Shhhh with a southern twang.

So far everyone I have asked about the use of the word Sheesh here in Texas, thinks I am a nutcase... Okay, so perhaps they thought that before I asked but none of them saw anything wrong with the use of Sheesh or thought it represented Jesus.

I have been using Sheesh for some time now and even my most legalistic friend who always brings my every failing to my attention has never said a thing about the use of the word. And he isn't even American, much less southern.

So am I right or am I wrong in this use of the word Sheesh? Well, I am not sure it matters because if one person thinks I am using Sheesh as Jesus then it could hurt my witness with that one person. I really don't want to do that!!

At the same time, I don't know if it's possible to please all the people all the time. After all I am human and so very imperfect even though I am saved.

Years ago, I was banned in one Christian chatroom for using the word Fudge. I was actually talking about a holiday recipe at the time but evidentially there are Christians who believe the use of the word Fudge is also taking the Lord's name in vain and in this particular Christian chatroom, it was on the auto ban list.

I wrote to the owners of the chatroom and had them look at the room logs and they reinstated me with a nice apology but I never came back there.

I think they were just a wee bit too strict for me. I wasn't sure what other words they had banned that I wouldn't know about it and with my mouth, it wouldn't be long before I was banned again. After all, what if the word Coffee was a bad one too?

In the south, many southern ladies will use, "Well, bless you heart." That sounds nice enough to others in the northern states perhaps. But here in the south, it's a like a big jab with a pointed elbow. It certainly does not mean, "May God bless you!"

Sometimes I say Man oh Man... Maybe that could be misconstrued somehow as well. After all, man was made in the image of God.

Personally, I don't like the use of the phrase Holy Crap. It draws images in my mind's eye of a priest standing over a pile of poo and blessing it.

I guess maybe I should stick with Holy Guacamole Batman or perhaps I should just pray I keep my mouth shut more. I know the latter is never a bad idea!!

Corrie, one of my mom's favorite sayings when she was upset was, "Oh, fiddlesticks!" My kids got a BIG kick out of that!

I see nothing wrong with you using that word. And I think the people who object to it (or think about it, for that matter) need to find better things to do with their time.

When you look at the online dictionary definitions of this word, the basic definition remains the same but the origin of it differs. A couple of site do say that it is a form of Jesus, but others say it refers to Sh*t. The latter sounds more feasible to me. I don't see how one can get Sheesh out of Jesus.

I think that the intent of the heart, and the cultural understanding of a word, need to be considered. If in Noah's area it is seen as a derivative of Jesus I sure wouldn't want to use it there...and one of the online definitions that said it was a form of Jesus was from England.

Meanings vary so much from country to country...in England I would also never call my fanny pack. And a Christian inviting you over for a joint after church would not go over so well in my neck of the woods but would make a Brit drool!

Not to mention that in Mexico I wouldn't eat at Chi Chi's (a slang for breasts en espanol) but suuuuuure loved that restaurant before it folded here in Canada.

NOW, guacamole on the other hand is made from squished avocados...avocados is the Aztec word for 'testicles' soooooooo...holy guacamole...hmmmmmmmm

It is all relative...

BAHHHahahahahaha exactamente!! And we don't even want to begin to talk about eggs. LOL

I do use a lot of slang, but not actual curse words. I never really think about meaning...it's just meant as an intensifier. And it's definately regional. Some things I said back home I can't say here because it's more insulting or sometimes meaningless and vice versa.

Yay! Do a google search if they have a list of all those expressions! I'll be back to read it!!

Lo( L ) and behold... didn't Paul wrote something about eating meat for sacrifice that was sold in the market?

Have a look at 1 Cor. Ch. 8 and 10.

In there you'll find also the same verse I mentioned once earlier: ... everything is lawful/permissible, but not expedient/beneficial...

Certainly if one's own heart doesn't mean no harm, there can't be no fault, nor judgment!

For why should my freedom be judged by another's conscience?
[He] speak[s] to sensible people; judge for yourselves what [he] say[s]

But the man who loves God is known by God.

And the last is indeed the most important! Sheesh!! LOL!

Btw, one of my favorites bands in the late 60's was "Vanilla Fudge"!
Have you heard of them?

Oh fiddlesticks! (Sounds like something my great grandmother would say! . When people start looking at words with that kind of intencity in order to find something nasty or unChristian, they have a very small mind! So to Heck with them!

May God Bless You in ABUNDANCE

As the unwitting instigator { } behind Overcaffeinated's writing of this blog, I would like to clarify a couple of things. This week I have been accused of being a "humanist liberal" and now the "legalistic language and thought police"! Can both be true of the same person? People who know me would unaminously say that I am neither! {I hope }

My intention with the "OMG" post was simply to draw attention to the fact that we often use words and phrases without even realising their origin. I am sure that I do the same myself. I did not intend to bring anyone under condemnation and apologise if I have done so. If someone uses a phrase innocently then I am sure the Lord does not regard them as misusing his name.

As regards this post, I think Jesus --> Jeez --> Sheesh is actually a very short road indeed. I agree with YOUNG53M that "fudge" is probably a euphemism for another word beginning with the same first two letters. And some things are down to similar languages {i.e. different versions of English} being used. Hellen {aneleh} is aware of the very different use of at least one word in England ! And the Australian creationist Ken Ham {now based in America} is fond of describing the odd looks he got when he once asked a young American girl who was babysitting if she would like to "nurse the baby"!

Peace to everyone.

No, "cor blimey" does indeed originate from "God blind me".

Incidentally I don't know if anyone realises that "pulling my leg" has a Biblical origin. In Genesis 25 v 25 we read that "[Jacob] came out, with his hand grasping Esau's heel". The footnote in my Bible says this:

Jacob means "he grasps the heel" (figuratively, he deceives)

Truth is indeed stranger than fiction!

Thank each of you for your comments. Thank you to those who have been supportive, empowering, encouraging and uplifting to me. I am not feeling well tonight and have decided not to subject myself to the condemnation, negativity and judgement that I feel on the blogs tonight.

I did not post this to be judgemental against Noah. His post made me seriously think about the words I use and don't even think about but after seeing some of the stuff on the blogs tonight and even some of the things on my own blog tonight. I am seriously considering not coming back.

It's not worth feeling like crap over... and yes, I said CRAP because that's exactly how I feel tonight! If I cannot add an air of positivity here then I shouldn't be here.

God bless y'all if that doesn't offend everyone too much!

you do know that it was said in a light hearted humorous way to show how seriously we can take purely innocent things right? they were named 'avocados' by the indigenous people because of how they look when two of them are hanging together on the tree...pure and simple...continue to enjoy them without them (or me)turning your tum.

Give me a break. I don't think God is up there tripping on the word Sheesh. I used Gheesh. That would be more like Jesus, but I'd never heard that before. I grew up Pentecostal and they didn't bat an eye when we said innocent things like that. But, boy we had to hide the TV when the preacher or other church members came over. Come to fine out, they all had TVs and were just hiding them from each other. I think we are WAY more picky than God when it comes to things like this.

I just took it to heart when someone supposedly has regularly read my blog for nearly two years and still has absolutely no discernment as to where my heart may be and now looking back, I don't even think he actually read the entire thing. Dearest Friends:

I am closing this post because I need to for my own health and healing right now. I don't think I have the oomph to respond to everyone who has posted here as much as I would love to do so.

This started out as my thinking outloud because my choice of words might not be the best ones and I don't want anything to interfer with my witness. It was not meant to put Noah/Peter down or build myself up.

I did get my feelings hurt by one of the responses. I am unable to go to that person privately since I don't have enough points but have done my best to contact them and let them know how I feel about the situation. I am praying it will resolve the situation.

However, I'm a big girl and I'll get over it. But right now, I am really really tired. Life has worn me down right now and I really just want to go pray and try to get some sleep.

God bless y'all and thank you for your responses. Y'all have been great and I truly appreciate each of you. I would list all your names but I know I would somehow forget someone and I wouldn't want to leave anyone out.
