Why don't students take school seriously?

This week is benchmark week. I gave the social studies today. They weren't taking it seriously. I told them that they weren't going to bomb it like they did the December test. They will look at it some more tomorrow. I taught everything that is on the test. Tomorrow, they are taking the science test.
It is like pulling teeth to get them to do well, to turn in homework. Then they get upset when they get bad grades. We tell them to pay attention and try, then they will do well.

I did not work hard in high school. I learned alot in college that i should have learned in high school. I think the real challenge is to convince them that the decisions they make today affect their situation years down the road. If i had to do it over again i would of took went into engineering. I kind of work in that field today i am a technician working for engineers. ON the other hand i may not of had the character at the time to do it. I know that sustandard work was accepted from me by my parents and teachers because I had them and myself convinced that was all i was capable of. I found out later i just was not encourage enough and also had to experience some victories to give me the desire to move ahead.
