Yielding to life situations

One day I walked into my 's room and saw a big Yield sign. It is the inverted triangle with the red word "Yield" on a white background, the kind that stands guard at onramps to freeways. I do not know how it came to live in my garage, whether by misdemeanor or legitimate acquisition. In any case, I considered this sign a value-added asset to our home for a short time as it provided me with some spiritual fodder every time I would open his door. I believe the sign was skip traced across the pond when I last moved, then it sank. My says it came from another friends house and I believed him, but non the less it's gone.

The word "yield" in one sense connotes abundance, bounty, a measure of fruitfulness: a yield is a harvest, interest paid on an investment. To yield is to give way, as to oncoming traffic and it makes traffic flow and coupled with deep breaths, lowers blood pressure, I think. One might judiciously yield to a persuasive argument or compassionately yield by putting on hold one's own agenda.

Yet to know when to yield is so important in a Christians life and so often it is not even acknowledged. It's the essence of turning the other cheek: "I choose to deflate the conflict by not responding to this person." More than once, Jesus yielded to Pharisees or Romans in order to de-escalate a war of unpleasant words.

How often do you yield when faced with confrontation? Do you yield when others let you down or don't hold up their end of the arrangement? Do you yield when you are inconvenienced or put out? Do you yield the right of way of other humans, like one would in a car? How important is yielding in the life of a Christian? What if it was the law?
