WHAT DOES DANCING ELICIT? Memories of Hawaii Hula dance in Hawaii is an artform and the graceful dancing is reminiscent of the motion of the major island elements – the sea and the wind. It tells a story. It speaks of being Hawaiian and the way of life that embodies the core values of a Hawaiian lifestyle. It is a way of sharing in movement, joy and music in a story. Since ancient times there have been several "schools" of dance, each unique. But what is shared by all is the fact that every part of the dancer's body is integral to telling the story: eyes, expressions, and finger tips. In the Western culture you may see ballet, belly dancing, exotic dancing, tap dancing, ballroom dancing, slam dancing or some other movement expressed as an artform? Which forms of dance are biblical or were practiced in the days of Christ reign? Is dancing acceptable for Christians and if so in which formats? 5/9/2003 NOW JUST WHAT DID I DO ![]() (¯`•♥•´¯) ¤`•.♥.•´ ¤ (¯`•♥•´¯) |

You may want to read the following entry in my blog - Biblical Dancing. It is a cut and paste from a tract I wrote.

Thank you bryan for the biblical view of dancing. If dance is expressed as an artform should this be a problem for the Christian? Many children of Christian parents and other cultures submit their young children to dance lessons at a very young age. Does anyone know if the bible references dance as an artform? Bryan - But what about dance as an artform? An artform that teaches and instills good Godly ethics, values, discipline and character. Where there any of these in the Bible? (¯`•♥•´¯) ¤`•.♥.•´ ¤ (¯`•♥•´¯)

Great post Bryan, these are great examples of bibical reasons of when dance is biblical or not. Are you aware of any scriptures that show that dance can be positive in our Western culture. I know that many a Christian parent sends their children off to dance school wether it be ballet, tap or hula depending on the region. Dance can instill disciple, moral character building, teamwork and some very positive attributes that are good in ones development. Why do Christians always go to the negative side of dance, yet send their children to dance schools? (¯`•♥•´¯) ¤`•.♥.•´ ¤ (¯`•♥•´¯)

Does this mean I have to express emotions without movement! I can express emotions if I do not move certain parts of my anatomy!! Did some king in the Old Testement dance naked in the streets of the capitol!!! According to some he was a man after God's own heart, except for the dancing. ![]()

There seems a difference bewteen artform, and athleticism, and sexuality. The dancing David did was artform, leaping athletic joy that was part of an enormous celebration and event he set up for the return of the ark. It wasn't a type of dancing that called forth sexuality in any way. Why are most dance halls dark? Or in our day, lit with unnatural lighting? Is the music played to glorify God or man? That kind of gives it away to me. Having said that, there have been times when I thought of dancing with my sweetheart in the privacy of our own home, some candles, some soft music, even spiritual instrumentals, and enjoying some intimate moments like that. Folk dancing, which is what the Jews did, as other cultures do, is a type of praise or celebration thing. Again, the sexuality is removed. Actually, hula dancing, though very folk natured, sure is sexual in appearance - either by movement or just because of the attire worn. I'm sure other forms of folk dance evoke the same feelings. Irish dance is really cool stuff, but being a drummer, and hearing them tap out rudiments at incredible speeds, is just really something cool to listen to for me. Yet, even there, watching Riverdance 1, and then getting to Lord of the Dance, same basic music, but the sexuality became over the top, and I could not enjoy it at all.

I think it has a lot to do with the motive of the heart. You can dance joyfully or seductively. You can watch and look at dance joyfully or with lust in your heart so this is where I draw the line but I love dancing and movement when its graceful and decent but some folks are so good its also about skill and art. If you are on the dance floor for the wrong reasons... then its another story so everyone has to look at what keeps their heart pure as God loves a joyful heart that dances for him... to praise him.
