Are we supposed to keep the ten commandments? Aren’t we still supposed to try and keep the Ten Commandments today? The answer to this question is "No." From the time that God gave the commandments to Moses in codified form He knew that humanity was incapable of keeping them. But, God gave the commandments to mankind anyway that they might drive him to his knees in frustration and cause him to seek God Himself. Even under the Old Covenant it was the desire of God that human beings have a personal relationship with Him (Exodus 13 ![]() Steven McVey |

yay brother...now I can go out and break all of them...if anyone tries to arrest me I'll just say that Tropical Guy told me it was ok. While I agree a personal relationship with Christ is the utmost priority, that is not to lessen my responsibility and accountability and even though I cannot be completely obedient as Christ was for me that is not to let sin abound. Careful what you give Christians licence to do with their liberty, bro.

True, we need to have a personal relationship with God, well....VERY true. But, we also need to obey his commands. So, to me, this is the ten commandments as well as numerous others. If we say no, doesn't that give non-Christians or even Christians the desire to pick and choose in the bible which things are true and which are untrue? THAT is a scary thing.

One other thing, Jesus obeyed the ten commandments and told the rich ruler to do likewise and so should we, even though we fail so that as you say it will lead to seeking God and through repentance establish a two way relationship with Him.

ok my answer to this question or comment is this: Matthew 5:17-20. if i read this correctly, Jesus himself says that he came not to "abolish the law or the prophets" but "to fulfill them". next, how do we know what sin is with out the law? Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment in the law was. he answers in Matthew 22:37-40. the most pointed of His statements is Verse 40, "all the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments." so if i am to understand this correctly, the 10 commandments still apply even if we have a new covenant with God.

I agree with Michelob and further and what was that Jesus said..I will type real slow here for you too it was something about n o t c h a n g i n g o n e j o t o r t i t t l e o f t h e l a w and if Christians will obey the law yendor, why don't they

Rod I know we are saved by grace and there is nothing we can do to be saved, but we show that we believe and accept that by our obedience remember faith without works is dead Tropicalguy Jesus fulfilled the ceremonial law. He fully obeyed but did not obliterate the moral law. Ofcourse I am a sinner who cannot obey it. Do we toss out traffic laws because the majority of people disobey them too.Be real. Use your God given wisdom

Rod, thankyou for returning here. I still think that as Christians we are commanded to obey whether we want to or not because Christians can be so fickle, one minute they want to and the next they don't. the heart is deceitful above all else if we think we want to, can do and will do in perfect obedience to God's commands

I have seen posts by many people here, that when they refer to "not being under the law", they include the Ten Commandments. Yet in scripture, the Ten Commandments, are specifically referred to as the commandments, GOD'S COMMANDMENTS, separate from the law. I have also seen people that drop anything from the Old Testament as if it no longer applies due to the new covenant. The Ten Commandments always have, and always will apply to those that follow HIM. So the following scripture is taken only from the New Testament, to hopefully verify that the Ten Commandments still stand, and YES, HIS children are to keep them. Please note the last one, "The Commandments of God AND the faith of Jesus" Matthew 19:17 KJVA) And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. 1 John 5:2 KJVA) By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 1 John 5:3 KJVA) For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. Revelation 12:17 KJVA) And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Revelation 14:12 KJVA) Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

The Law and commandments were so many more than those 10 that we know. Jewish people had so many traditions given by God to follow to fulfill the rituals, that were needed in old covenant. Jesus fulfilled the Law and left us to keep the 10 most important ones. First 3 commandments are included into 'You must love the Lord God with all your heart...' That is to consider God to be first in our life and to obey and respect Him, let Him have the first place in our heart. Next 7 ones are about our relation chip to our fellow men ...'love your neighbor as yourself' And thats why Jesus said 'in those hangs all the Law and the prophets'. Loving Lord with our heart, we also love his works, our fellow men.

Odimma56......I agree with YOU, and anyone else who agreed with the 10 commandments. Without some laws in this world kaos would rule, there would be no order. Wasn't that movie called, "The Lord of the Flies"? Living under man's set of order or really disorder! If someone doesn't obey the 10 commandments, do they neglect the local laws as well? My opinions. My comments. Hiz4Ever† Vincit Veritas~Truth Conquers
