calling all computer geeks

i have not really kept up with breaking developments in computing. i have been using an e-machines pentium dubba core 2.7ghz, 4GB memory and windows 7. it is a good computer, but i want to upgrade, and i really have no clue what to get.

i want another tower laptop, i have been looking at the intel quad? i think that is it. i am not trying to build a gaming computer, but i do a lot of high end graphics and audio. what i am hoping to get is LAST YEARS latest and greatest at a little reduced price.

does anyone have any advice as far as the processor and speed?

thanks

i have been researching too, and i don't really need the best graphics card...and i have some from old computers.

what i am really trying to figure out is the best processor for the money lately?

i stopped paying attention after pentium 4? then i bought this emachine, a double core, at a clearance at best buy. this is a great computer, but i am going to retire it to the church and buy an even greater one for myself.

i have a walmart credit card.

free. that is what i have discerned so far too. i am just trying to get the geek perspective rather than the sales pitch.

also, i found something called a virtual PC that will let me run XP in win7, so i can use this machine to record. (my sound hardware is all too old to run in win7). so i am trying to find a used AMD quad that runs win7 now.
