introducing calvin the great

i did it. i got the dog. he is smaller than hobbes, he is inside her cat tree in the picture.

he is 7 weeks old, and like an infant. when he came here last night, he couldn't climb the stairs or get on the couch. he could kind of roll down the stairs, and if he wanted to go down, that was what he would do. he seems to have no fear.

this morning he is on and off the couch like a pro and getting up stairs on his own, one stair at a time. he attacks the broom when i sweep and the rag when i wipe the floor. which i am doing a LOT since he came.

i pulled up all the rug in the basement and blocked it off as a kind of nursery. i have been remodelling and the rug had to come up anyways. i have to put up drywall down there and have been doing a lot of the electric work. it is pretty big, and it will be his home until he gets potty trained and a little older.

hobbes is not that interested in him at all. which is good, at least she doesn't hate him. he likes her and wants to play, but she just runs away and goes on something way high.

i had been telling hobbes that a doggie is coming, and she is smart enough to know what i was saying. charlie had a chiuahuahua named moby, and she knows he was a doggie. she has seemed like she missed moby's company, although moby was terrified of her.

he has a marking around each eye in light brown that makes him look like he is more serious than he is, but he is really pretty smart. he has already started standing up to hobbes. she raises a paw over her head to warn him to stay way, and he raises his paw too. it looks like they are high fiving each other.

Aaaw, I used a crate to train my pup. It helps a lot in house training. They don't like to"go" where they sleep, si the crate shouldn't be very big. Also a puppy can't hold their bladder until about 5 months old I think. Even if you yell or pick him up he'll just keep peeing. Pls don't punish him for that. Some ppl don't know these things and it's so much kinder to crate and let him out often. He's such a cutie!

i did not know that about the bladder. he is REALLY smart and he has gotten the poo part out of the house, but keeps leaking regular. i had taken up the pee pads and been on his case about still leaking. i will put some back down, he understands what they are, but doesn't always hit them exactly.

but i don't really ever punish him. i just tell him "no," show him the offense, and then take him out in the 'yard' and tell him "go potty" over and over. i tell him good boy and lavish affection on him when he goes in the yard. he understands the solid component, he just is still having trouble with the liquid.
