Newbie Ramblings Although I'm a regular journal writer, an online blog is quite a different matter altogether. There is the fact that it's not completely private and almost anyone out in cyberspace can stumble upon this...that makes me a little cautious. I guess it depends on what I see a journal for. If it's merely to ventilate, then I guess it's ok. If it's to clarify my thoughts and feelings, then I'd probably be a little more cautious. I read in today's newspapers about the young undergraduate who took the risk to declare his interest in a fellow uni-mate during a public platform - the lecture. Since the lecture was video-taped, this tape actually made it's rounds on the internet....and lots of people got to catch a glimpse of it. The male undergraduate was really cool about it. But his female counterpart was quite embarrassed by the whole incident. Kind of reminded me about the scandalous "yours is yum" email. If you're reading this and don't know what that email was all about, go do a little research! ;> I think compared to the veterens of blogging, I come from an era where there were clear boundaries separating private and public selves. I don't think it's hypocritical. The human psyche is not meant to expose itself to the scrutiny of others. It's a fragile flower that can be trampled upon, and in some cases, never quite recover from the trampling. I guess for the internet, it's all about risks. The risk of exposing oneself (not necessarily in the buff as in sans clothes) but of exposing one's innermost thoughts to strangers and hoping that they would treat the revelations with respect and dignity. But then, it takes all kinds to make up the world; so not everyone may play with the same rules. Probably some may not even be aware that there are expectations regarding decorum. The internet - an alternative world that enables one to be both annonymous and a voyeur. And this, anyone who has stumbled into my world, would be the subject of another entry. |

Dear Jsca, it is good reading your blog. Internet has its own good as well as bad side. We can tap the good for the use of humanity and discard the ugly one. However, there is the need to be open to everyone in our daily lives. I am a christian, a Pastor from Nigeria and I have been in Singapore since June,2005. Not quite long! Anyway, I have observed most Singaporeans too cold towards strangers which ought not to be so. Not all strangers are bad anyway. Thank God, MY FRIENDS that we met in Bigchurch have found out I am a real Christian and not fake(SEE MY BLOG). HELP SPREAD THE MESSAGE! BE OPEN MINDED WHILE STILL KEEPING YOUR IDENTITY!! God bless you abundantly. Amen. I love and appreciate your concern. PASTOR JOHN EKUNDAYO(BigChurch)
