Should We Love Immigrants ?

Experience is a good teacher? Perhaps experience is the only teacher that really matters. It might be easy to be against chocolate until you have tried chocolate. I used to be neutral to motorcycles until I bought one. I used to be shy about public speaking until I began to speak in public.

Recently, I have been in the tropics and acquainted with asians in their own tropical culture. I experienced the asian pacific immigrants. These people work very hard to come to the USA. It takes years and lots of money to make the journey. The US Embassy's abroad tell them to start businesses as entrepreneurs as soon as they get here. This they do and provide employment for hundreds of Americans. The Asian culture is a strong family and community oriented group of people. They have a strong work ethic.

What I have learned about immigration from experience has been an eye opener. It is true that it is difficult, with many pages of paperwork, and expensive like thousands of dollars, and sometimes many years to enter the USA legally. Of course most of us know that our USA was founded by immigrants. I believe that immigrants are one of our greatest treasures because the Lord has blessed each culture with strengths. Because people are a great resource for our nation, I hope we can find a way to make it simpler, less expensive, and less time consuming for this national resource to be here legally and always welcome. We really need every talent we can get. I believe we should be on the side of immigrants like we used too, and expedite their journey to become part of our national resource.

I believe we are going to need everything we have to deal with our national future successfully. Why let other nations have these many people who want to contribute to our national well being? We have solved so many problems with better thinking. Few would say that having 15 million immigrants here illegally is a good condition for them or for us. There must be new ways to turn this situation into a win for everyone.

A recent asian pacific party I attended.

Your eyes have also been opened to the great potential that awaits us when we can fix this problem. We hear so much about the negatives of 15 million being here illegally. There needs to be a way to correct this because people are a national treasure. Your examples show again the blessing these immigrants can be and how hard we make it for them.

Why they come here is for opportunity that our constitution provides. They are strongly motivated as proved by the hardships they have to endure just to be here legally, and how hard they work, and how much they contribute when they get here. Just thinking of what is good for the USA could open our eyes to to make this a win for everyone. I believe that when a majority of US citizens see the gold mine of human potential we have in our hands, we will then find a solution for this problem because it is in our national best interest to do so.

Our government, and rightly so, does not want them to be a threat or a burden. From what I have seen, I believe that most of them are neither. They want freedom and opportunity and they will carry more than their own weight. My point is that once we see how much human potential there is for our own country, we will resolve this situation.

Again Jesus principle of love our neighbor as our self applies. WE are hurting our self by not turning this around for what is good for all concerned. We can make this a blessing for everyone.

Hi Richard. I took a day or two to respond to this cos I honestly am on the fence about the immigration issue. But as to the main question, I'd say yes, we should love immigrants because I believe the Lord wants us to love everyone.

As to being on the fence about allowing more of them to come here, or to grant amnesty, I think there are a lot of ppl like me who just can't decide. I only know that the majority of Americans have voted for a fence along the border, and because I agree with democratic principles, I often tend to support the will of the people.

But I'll be interested to read what others have to say on the issue, because overall, I just don't know.

Gavin, your honesty is so refreshing. It is rare that people ever say they just don't know. In my opinion the immigration issue is annoying to say the least. As time has gone by I have experienced not just the South American immigrants who are often here illegally, but also the asian pacific immigrant people who have achieved resident status, and US citizenship, and gone on to start businesses.

I believe now that what is in our very best interest is to fix this soon as possible. I believe there is not just one problem, but two problems we have to solve. The first is the immigrants' breaking the laws coming here illegally. Their problem is they can not make it here legally. They are often poor and uneducated, but are willing to work hard. The second problem is our own immigration system which needs updated. It probably worked fine years before terrorism, which changed our world in the US overnight. We changed our security quickly, but the immigration process has hardly been adjusted to this new world.

Security is a big priority now. Our security is not just border protection, but it has economic, spiritual, and emotional dimensions. We need national security more than ever, but also we need human resources, talent, intelligence, ethics, all which are available to our country for its success and prosperity for the asking. However we fix this, I strongly believe we are doing our self a big favor to make this happen by modernizing our immigration services.

What people don't know, unless they have traveled, is that asian pacific and probably European immigrants come here not to take jobs away from Americans, who are not as qualified, but to also start businesses. In times past we didn't need immigrants, but today we need every genius and talent we can get.

Our national isolation served us well for many years. It allowed us as a nation to grow and develop. Today the world is connected and interrelated. There is no longer any isolation. The USA needs talent now more than it ever has in our short history. WE will not be just doing immigrants a favor, but our national security and prosperity a big favor by improving our immigration process.

But, like you, there is something I don't know, that is how to modernize it. I just know by my experience of seeing the human potential here available to us, and also intuitively that this needs to be done.

You stated the principle of love for all very well. But, as always the question is now how do we do it. Once we know why, then next is how. Any ideas?

Love is Jesus answer for sure. So now how does love apply to the immigration issue in the USA? I believe that security regarding each immigrant is the only thing we need to know. That is, security from any diseases they might bring into the country, security from any criminal history or radical extreme speech or writing, and security from being a burden to the social security system. Each immigrant would need medical screening, and background checks and financial sponsors.

The truth is that all these checks and sponsorship are being done right now. Its just expensive for the immigrant, and time consuming. If we had an international data pool, better computers, and free immigration paid for maybe by a tax on income of new immigrants for five years to pay for the latest arrivals, it would be fast, efficient, and cost effective.

Probably the biggest problem we face is the data pool on each prospective immigrant from their home country. Our government knows everything about us from our social security number. This government knowledge is not so with Asian countries and perhaps some European, and for sure South American countries. It will probably have to be mandated by the United Nations for this data pool to come into existence.

The reason the USA Passport is so powerful in the world, is for one thing, the owner has been thoroughly vetted. Homeland Security knows everything about each individual holder of an American Passport. You have no idea of its power in traveling across borders in the world until you present it and enter another country. It is very respected and few questions asked. Our government has a daunting task trying to vet the identity and background of citizens of other countries. I believe it can be done much better and efficiently if the immigrants for five years contribute a portion of their income to pay for the screening and backgrounds checks of new immigrants. In this way we win because the USA is not burdened with more debt and the immigrants win because their process is faster and they pay their way.

Again the issue is security. Almost any problem in the world can be solved with money, believe it or not. Since it is not likely any time soon that the nations of the world will do faster and thorough background checks on their citizens wanting to leave their country and immigrate here, we will ourselves have to pay for the manpower and better computers to secure immigrants free of disease, criminality, and extremist attitudes written or spoken. Prospective immigrants could come here free, and the established legal immigrants living here could pay for it since someone helped pay for them by a five year immigrants tax.

The USA gains many new business's, jobs, more money, and increased national talent, all at a minimum cost since it is paid for by the immigrants already here and earning. The new external immigrants come here faster, easier, and at little cost, if they are free of disease, criminal or extremist background.

To deal with internal immigrants, those 15 million here already illegally, they could be offered legal status upon agreement to go through the same security checks and further agree to pay for the cost by ten year tax, a longer one to discourage illegal entry.
