The Measure Of Success

“He that is greatest among you shall be your servant.”
Matt. 23:11.

God has implanted the desire for success in the heart of every normal human being. Student, mechanic, teacher, doctor, minister, the humble homemaker all strive to prosper in their chosen field of activity. “That man is a success” or “She certainly has done well” are rather common heard clichés.
What is the elusive quality we call success? For some, success is measured by the accumulation of money. A material fortune, however, could hardly be set as a standard, for many rich men are failures and many poor men very evidently succeed. True, a successful man is not slothful in his business; but we cannot reckon his accomplishments by the size of his bank account.
In a way Mahatma Ghandi was one of the most successful leaders of the twentieth century. At his death his possessions consisted of two rice bowls, one spoon, two pairs of sandals, a copy of the Bhagavad-Gita, his eyeglasses, and an old-fashioned pocket watch.
Dipping into the Middle Ages, we think of St. Francis of Assis. During his lifetime this man of poverty exerted an influence over the entire Christian world–rulers, prelates, artists, businessmen, and laborers were equally affected by him. Someone has said that St. Francis was the most successful poor man who ever walked the earth.
David Livingstone was buried among the great of England in Westminster Abbey–not because of what he accumulated but because of what he gave in service.
The yardstick of true success is not how much a man accumulates or produces for himself, but how much he contributes to the welfare, the development, and the prosperity of others. If you want the joy of a successful life, then develop your God-given talents in service to others!

May the Lord bless you and keep you
