Better Biscuits than Mine

I have spent numerous hours over the years trying to find the perfect biscuit recipe. I have tried Martha's recipe as well as countless others, and while they have been good or actually just ok at best, none have come close to the biscuits my late grandmother used to make. Those of us in the family have tried to duplicate her biscuits without success; even after watching her make them we could not do it as she had no written recipe...she was a pinch of this, pinch of that cook.

So today I made the perfect biscuit...from a box of generic Always Save Biscuit Baking Mix. I purchased it 2 weeks ago to make an appetizer for my party. I actually bought it because I couldn't find Bisquick. Had not used Bisquick in years but this particular recipe called for it and after searching up and down the aisles and not finding it I reluctantly purchased the Always Save mix figuring no one would know the difference since it was just one ingredient in the appetizer.

Well I got a hankering this morning for a biscuit. Spying the mix in the pantry I decided to give it a try and make just a couple of them. Well to my pleasant surprise I peeked in the oven and saw 2 beautiful mile-high biscuits; for those of you familiar with Hardee's biscuits they were like that...if not better. Perfect biscuits. So no more searching...no painstakingly measuring and mixing multiple ingredients. No, a couple of cups of mix and some water, a little kneading, rolling and cutting...and voile...the perfect biscuit for me from now on...from a cheap box of mix. Martha, eat your heart out.

HAHAHAHA That's awesome! I've never heard of that brand.
I homemake all my cookies except for one kind that is made from a cake mix..people RAVE about them. I guess cause they taste like cake. hahahaha Sometimes the easy way works out best.

Yes, I am finding out the easy way IS sometimes the best...just wish I'd known making a great biscuit was this easy; if you only knew how much time I've spent trying to get it right!

Bisquick really is great. I make an awesome cinnamon roll with it as well...got rave reviews when I brought it to a family gathering back east...hated to have to admit that it wasn't from scratch!

Hi Helen...how about that recipe? I'd love to make them for my Dad. Who knew Bisquick (or Always Save) could be so good?!

Its actually very simple.

Mix the Bisquick dough as per the roll out biscuit instructions...
spread butter over the top,
top with brown sugar and cinnamon
(raisins if you like),
place in greased muffin tins,
put some sugar on top if you desire
and bake.

Let me know how he likes 'em.

Thank you so much...that is one of my father's favorite things..his mom used to make homemade cinnamon rolls and mail them to him for Christmas and his birthday. Now that I know how good Bisquick-made items are I will definitely try it.

OK...now I am hungry...LOL! My grandma made the biscuits. When I was young and would visit her, she made them every day.
I would get up on my stool to watch and eat half the dough. She always gave me some to roll and I would fill it with jelly and bake it for my mom! POOR MOM!! She always ate every bite! That's a mom for ya!

So I was not the only young biscuit dough eater?! It's a wonder there was any left for the biscuits, huh? Why is it all grandmas can bake biscuits and few of us have that natural talent...well until I discovered boxed biscuit mix!! Life will forever be different!

We have allergies here so we don't make these kind of things, but instead I make puffed rice cookies with Tahnini and rice malt, and maccarons, and how about orange and almond cake, all gluten free of course.

Gluten allergies can be a challenge but sounds like you have some creative recipes. Macaroons are great...the orange and almond cake sounds interesting, too. Not so sure about tahini cookies...I like hummus made with tahini, though.

Deena, it's a secret recipie I developed years ago and sold it to many health food outlets, but when you mix those to ingredients together and cook it in a certain way, voila you have toffee, the healthy way! It is absolutley scrummy! Blessings
