The Danger of the Almost Perfect

How many times have we pursued something in our lives that seemed very good yet was not God's will for us? Have you ever tried to convince God that He should let you have something or someone or that He should let you do something because it seemed almost perfect or right in your own eyes? Have you ever wondered why God closes the door on the almost perfect? If something lines up with God's word and/or His revealed will to us in most respects, even if not in all respects, then why doesn't He just let us have what we want?

It is out of God's deep love for us that He keeps us from the almost perfect...because He knows the plans that He has for us. So many times we struggle in prayer trying to convince ourselves, and Him, that what we are seeking just has to be His will. The silence on the other end can be deafening as He waits for us to reach a place of submission to His will.

There is no room in our lives for the almost right or the almost perfect. Anything less than God's will for us can bring much grief and heartache. Do you recall when, in Samuel 8, the elders of Israel pleaded with Samuel to give them a king to lead them? Samuel went to God and this is what the Lord replied "Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king....Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will do." Samuel told them all of the atrocities that would be done through the king the Israelites begged for...yet "the people refused to listen to Samuel. "No!" they said. We want a king over us..." So God gave them a king...He gave them Saul. Most of you are familiar with the grief Saul brought on the Israelites. It is possible, in denying God His rightful place as Lord in our lives, struggling to have our own way, that if we continue to close our ears, that He might eventually just let us have what we ask for. We may then have to live with the painful consequences of our willfulness. That is not to say that God does not forgive us when we repent and submit to His lordship; of course He does. But why subject ourselves to needless heartache; why would anyone in their right mind wish to miss out on God's best for their lives? We judge based on what we see in front of us, what we know with our limited minds, what we feel with our hearts...but God knows everything...the hidden, the unspoken, the yet to happen. God says in Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Isn't it enough to know that HE knows...even though we don't?

God has a unique plan for each of us...there is no one that He has forgotten or neglected. He is constantly working to bring those plans to pass...despite the detours that we sometimes choose along the way. When doors close, trust Him. There is always a reason though we may never know it in this life. He redirects us, He says no, He closes the door on the less than perfect....because He knows that almost right is completely wrong; and that almost perfect is imperfect. Give God your best, surrender your will, your freedom to choose; be sensitive to His direction in the smallest detail. In doing that we place ourselves in a position to see all that He has planned for us come to fruition. Don't settle for anything less than His will for you.

He is no fool if he should choose to lose the things he cannot keep to gain what he can never lose.....Jim Elliott
