Innocent as Doves...

Innocent as doves…
16I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. Matthew 10

Perspective:
When Jesus sent out his disciples he said to them that they are to be as shrewd as snakes, in other words, as untrusting and ready to take action, as a snake would (being a natural predator and much feared). However, he tells them to be as innocent as doves. In other words, he calls on them to have an approach as gentle and peaceful as doves. Furthermore, this has the inherent meaning that any disciple of Christ will have to be blameless, or innocent. We have to keep our side clean so that no one can point a finger at us. This means that even though we are to "be cautious as snakes" or "keep our wits about us" we must still remain "innocent" or "blameless".
So when we as Christians go out into the world, what do we set out to achieve? We certainly plan to get on with our daily lives, however, as Christians we have the pledge to go out into the world and make a positive difference so that God’s love shines through us.
On the one hand, we are to expect that life has its pitfalls and that not everyone will be as they seem, so we ought to be wary of the fact that not everyone will have our good intentions. However, we should also aspire to not be so intensely focused on mistrusting everyone, that we forget to share the core values we learn as Christians, to share out peace and love with everyone we meet.
