Cats!! What are they good for?

What is the point of owning a cat? This is not an anti-cat post - I genuinely want to know the answer.

I have never owned a cat or a dog. I quite like dogs, or to be more accurate I like other people's dogs. I don't think I could be bothered to do all that is necessary to look after one properly. But I can see what people get from owning a dog - companionship, loyalty, perhaps a feeling of security if it's a big dog!

But cats? They spend all day wandering off on their own business, come back to get fed, then clear off again. So what is the point of having one?

And another point. My niece, who owns 3 cats, says "You don't own a cat, a cat owns you". If this is true then surely a Christian shouldn't have a cat at all, since "no man can serve two masters" {and our master is God}.

Anyone like to correct my ignorance?

I have had a cat; my mom had a cat; I love cats! Oh, one can do a lot with cats too, provided you get good contact with them from youngest age.
Dogs are too "fidgety" for me, LOL! And then you have to curb them... and most stink when they get older! eeewww!! But certainly a must have when you live in the country!

Btw, one gets very attached to cats too, and one becomes a slave (loses one's freedom) even to dogs when one has to travel and stay away too often!

How to choose a cat? Let them choose you! hahahaaaa!!! It works!

Hi Peter,
Personally i`m not a cat person coz i don`t like the fact that the ones that do go outside bring back "little presents for the owner ". My sister has had cat after cat since she left home n at times they bring back half dead rabbits, birds, mice etc.She would end up with with a trail of carcasses that the cat would play with then kill and eat. I couldn`t stomach that in my house.Mind you at times she`d have to get the poor half dead whatever it was and give it a quicker end then put it in the bin.Yuk.
As you know i`m a dog person. I just love em. None of my dogs in the past or now bring livestock of any form back home. My present dog Zac does however eat rabbits when we`re out but well away from me.
God Bless,
Wendy

Show me the way Sweet JESUS.
Lead and i Will follow.

I can't correct you!!! I think you have to be either a cat lover or you're not. I am not. I love kittens....but cats....no. I'm allergic to them anyhow so having one in the house is a no-no. Having outdoor cats on a farm (as I grew up) they kept away a lot of critters like mice, snakes, and things like that. I prefer a dog, too....but only the non-shedding ones!!! Geeeeeeee, I'm so picky!!!!

    Quoting  :

Ooooh, them's fighting words..."dogs are too stupid to know they have been emancipated." !!! What!!! They are just loyal...and love you for more than just what you feed them. And they, at least the breed I have had (Keeshonds), are very intelligent...once I could not find one of my shoes... I said, "Gracie, I can't find my shoe." She looked around the room and then spied it behind the Christmas tree, walked over to it, put her paw on it, then looked at me, then the shoe, to show me where it was. I did not teach her that, she just came to learn a lot of things like that on her own. She also taught me to be a better driver. If I was following too close or driving too fast (yes, I confess) she would come up between the 2 front seats and pull on my arm with her paw. She would not stop until I slowed down. Can your cat do that? I bet not!!!

Thanks for your comments everybody. I think you all realised that my post was partly tongue-in-cheek but I have learned a few things I didn't know before. Just a couple of specific responses:

To Interpretation: looks like we're on the same wavelength on this one! Yes, it was the song "War" that I had in mind when I chose the title, and the answer you gave to the question was also the one I had in mind!

To meow33744: This wasn't aimed at you of course, and I think you realised that as your reply was partly tongue in cheek too.

The only pets that we had as I was growing up were budgies! The ones we had were more fun than EITHER a cat OR a dog. Memories of having to rearrange the Monopoly money after it had been blown all over the place by a perishing bird! {Maybe cats are good for something after all!}

Blessings to all
Peter

Oh and did I mention my dog sometimes take over the driving when I'm tired...and climbs the ladder and helps me hang the lights at Christmas!

Okay right after I posted that last comment I let my dog out in the backyard...she ran out into the yard and I saw a very large snake jump up from the grass right underneath her! She ran right across it....couldn't see what kind; it was in the bushes by the time I got out there. She seems fine, so don't think she was bitten. But maybe I should confess that the last comment was a bit of a stretch?
