Karens perseverent healing

Karen is a personal friend of mine that I have known almost 20 years. She is married to a dear friend. Her story is one of what God can do if you keep on trying despite things looking like they will never change.

Karen became diabetic when she was 6 years old. She contracted a virus, that shut down her pancreas. Years later from the effects, her kidneys started to shut down too. It was a process. Steve was fantastic in helping her.

One night when bowling she fell into the gutter and hurt her hip. The doctors misdiagnosed her injury for 5 years. She had fractured it, and great pain persisted. During this time Steve and Karen had rededicated their lives to Jesus. I was there the night they were baptized in their swimming pool in Florida. It was cold, and she had to be lowered down into the pool to be baptized. 30 people attended. It was glorious to say the least.

A few years later and in much pain, they finally realized what was wrong with her hip. It took being examined by a doctor back in her home state. By this time deterioration had set in. They decided to perform hip replacement surgery. Her kidneys had become so unstable that during the surgery her body went into shock and she almost died. It was touch and go for several weeks. Her kidneys at this point had both failed. Not only that, but her eyesight had for the most part went too.

She kept telling people she would walk again. Karen was on a list for a kidney. She had been before the surgery. Steves' time in the service paid for everything to this point. They had two machines given for dialosis. They had boxes of materials in the home. They had used the machines for less than one week when the call came. A young man of 21 had died in Washington, DC.

She was rushed to get her kidney that she needed. But there was a hitch. Their was a pancreas too! She was given both in the surgery. A success. Over that next year she was given steroids and her body almost doubled. She till could not see and was considered legally blind. The new pancreas worked. She was no longer diabetic. The new kidney worked. so she had that function of her body back too.

That was almost 5 years ago. 10 years since the injury at the bowling alley. 10 years of fight and frustration and faith God had spoken to her spirit. This last july, an eye specialist wanted to try and operate on Karens eyes. He believed there was a chance to regain sight. They operated on one eye. It was a success! Six weeks ago they performed surgery on the other eye. Once again success. You have to realize that with thick glasses she could barely see the TV to enjoy it. The other day, she was allowed to get her drivers license back.

God is wonderful! She persevered. I just think there is a great lesson in this for all of us.
