How to make people smile

blair warren
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This morning I went to the management office in our building and complained that our suite was too hot. A few minutes later, the cold air started blowing.
I stopped by a little later to thank the manager for getting it fixed so quickly. She gave me a smile and said, “Wow. Everybody complains but almost nobody comes back and says thanks.”
“Well, I’m sure they appreciate it but just forget to tell you,” I said.
I’m not sure I fully believe that, but it sounded good at the time.
Still, giving people the benefit of the doubt (i.e. that they’re forgetful and not ungrateful) it makes me wonder…
Why is it that we rarely remember to say ‘thank you’ but almost always remember to complain?
I don’t know the answer to the question, but I do see an opportunity in it.
If we want to make someone smile and say, “Wow,” sometimes all we have to do is go back and say, “Thank you.”
