Sick and tired of your life? That makes changing it easier

Are you fed up? Are you sick and tired of how your life has turned out?

Millions of singles are. Yet most will keep plodding along, complaining, staying in the same old rut, while life slips by, eating up days, weeks, months and maybe years.

Change can be hard--so hard, in fact, that many people stay in an unsatisfying situation rather than work up the courage to overcome their inertia.

Just how sick and tired are you? Will this be the year you do something to improve things? Look at it this way. How long have you been sick and tired of your life? How many years can you look back and see when the bad situation started?
More important, can you look into the future and see that it will keep going on this way unless you do something about it?

Too many of us singles, women especially, are waiting for someone or something to rescue us. I don't know how that fantasy got started, but it's surprisingly common.

It's a sign that you've grown up when you see your rescuer in your mirror, staring back at you. God is always willing to help you, but as they say, even He can't steer a parked car.

Make up your mind

Let's assume that you're not going to argue that you're sick and tired of the way things are going. That's a fact. The next three steps are tougher.
You know that something has to change and that you're the one who has to get the ball rolling, not some fantasy rescuer who's never going to show up. Just recognizing that is a major accomplishment.

Next, you have to decide what you're going to do. You can ask friends and relatives for advice, but in the end, you're also responsible for taking the right action.

And third, you have to make up your mind to be rock-solid committed once you do make changes. Expect things to get tough. Real tough. Plan for that. Prepare for that, because if you don't, the first time you meet some obstacles--and you definitely will--you'll be tempted to fold and slip back into the old rut.

Complaining is one of the easiest activities on earth. Finding the mental toughness to change when you're sick and tired is a rarity.

Where's your support?

Whether it's a diet, a new job, a better place to live, or kicking an addiction, you're going to need some kind of support and encouragement while you're in the change process.
If family and friends won't support you, look for a formal support group in your city. Realize too, that God is always willing to stand with you when you're trying to change yourself for the better.

Make no mistake about it: This isn't going to be easy. If it were easy, millions of people would be changing instead of complaining.

One of my favorite guidebooks for personal change is If You Want to Walk on Water You've Got to Get Out of the Boat by John Ortberg.

If you're sick and tired of your current situation, you can make changes. You can make a better life for yourself, but it will take determination. When you accept responsibility for improving your life, you've taken the first big step.
