no, we cant be perfect

but we are perfect in our Fathers eyes because of what Jesus did. We are righteous only because of what Jesus did.

If we could, Jesus would never need come and give atonement

I like to think of myself as perfectly imperfect which is perfect for me to just be me, warts and all.

Hi Dennis...isn't it amazing to know that even as we know how our hearts can be, that if we ask forgiveness of sin...the slate is wiped absolutely clean...as far as the east is from the west. If God views our sin that way then we should also be like Him...forgiving others as He has forgiven us....and remembering their sins no more. A very basic principle so profound if you really meditate on it. He is not reserved toward us...He does not say "Well, I will try to love you but I am having a hard time forgetting what you've done"...No, He says "You are pure and perfect in my sight and I love you completely, wholeheartedly". Perhaps that is just a tiny bit of what God said when he exhorted man to love their wives as the Church...and when Jesus said "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you...." Pure, unabashed love....life changing, world changing if we let it.

I agree with what you said, Dennis. Our righteousness is in Christ alone. In and of ourselves, we are unrighteous, it is only in Christ Jesus our Lord that we are saved and made righteous because of who Jesus is, God. And because of His sacrificial atonement at the Cross on our behalf. The Lord Jesus Christ who is fully God and fully Man was the one and only person to live a sinless life on this earth.

We must have the help of the Lord in our life every step of the way in this life. We cannot sanctify ourself, that is the work of the Holy Spirit in our life. Everything is totally wrapped up in Christ, not of ourself. In order to live a holy life we must live "in Christ."

20] I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
21] I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
Galatians 2:20,21

If we are trying to live a holy life on our own, we'll never make it. We must have the help of the Holy Spirit every step of the way. We are not strong enough on our own to live a holy life because even the Christian is subject to the sin nature. Yes, the sin nature is suppose to be dormant in the life of the Christian and if our faith is properly placed in Christ it will be. But there are times the Christian fails. If we do sin, we have advocate with the Father through Jesus Christ our Lord, we repent and plead the blood of Jesus which cleanses us from our sins. But, I John 1:10 says that if we say we have no sin, we lie.
