The Right Questions

by Jan Holmes Jacobs

Asking the Right Question
by: Jan Holmes, copyright 1994

Lord, I've been asking so many questions,
But very few answers I've found.
The days keep passin' and things get worse.
You know it's really gettin' me down.
I'm stumblin' around in the darkness
Tryin' to see the light;
Fumblin' around for some sort of key..
Longin' to do what's right.
I WANT to do what You want me to,
But Lord, it isn't clear
And that sinking feeling that I feel
Is the icy hand of fear.
How am I gonna pay my bills?
How will I pay my rent?
Lord, just WHAT am I gonna DO,
When what little I have is spent?
What am I gonna DO, Lord?
What am I gonna DO?
Lord, I don't have the answers
To "What am I gonna do?".

Maybe my focus is in the wrong place;
The QUESTION I'm askin' is wrong.
Somehow, Lord, I've lost sight of Your face.
I've forgotten to whom I belong.
I belong to the One who feeds all the birds,
Who clothes all the lilies so fair,
I belong to the One Who has spoken the words,
"Bring to Me all your worries and care."
I belong to the Shepherd Who cuddles His sheep,
Who protects them and keeps them from harm;
Who leads them in pastures so green and so sweet,
Who shields them from threat and alarm.
I'm betrothed to a King, an heir to His throne,
The bride of the of His love,
I am flesh of His flesh, and bone of His bone,
He'll supply all my needs from above.
If I seek the Lord and His kingdom first,
All I need will be added to me.
I never will hunger, I never will thirst,
His abundant supply I will see.

My situation is still the same,
But the question I'm asking has changed.
My focus is now on my Father's face,
My priorities all rearranged.
The question I'm asking is now the right one,
As I keep the right ANSWER in view.
Understanding the work that's already been done,
I ask, "Lord, what are YOU gonna do?"
What are you gonna do, Lord?
What are YOU gonna do?
I know You have the answers and I will just wait,
And see, Lord, just what YOU will do.
