Artificial Food Additives Linked to Aggressive Behavior in

In Australia a school in New South Wales went additive free for two weeks. The school provided breakfast for the made from foods free of any additives, and sent home booklets for the parents suggesting foods that they could serve at home free from additives. The results were amazing. The began more co-operative, days became more harmonious, and disturbances became a thing of the past.

Principal Andrew Bennett said that the changes became obvious in three or four days.

The average American eats 2.4kg of additives each year. Processed foods are full of additives, preservatives, and dyes. Even foods that we think of as healthy such as breads and dried fruits can be to blame.

A new Nutrition Australia report notes in daycare who eat highly processed food are more likely to injure others in the playground, according to the staff who care for them. Nutrition Australia spokeswoman Aloysa Hourigan stated "Staff identified that with poorer food choices ... were more likely to be the who were impulsive and display behaviours which could cause injury to other ,"

In 2004 the University of California conducted a study that found that a lack of zinc, iron, vitamin B, and protein in the first three years of a 's life was linked to negative behavior later on. who were fed poorly were found to be more likely to fight, take drugs, and bully others.

Pediatrician Heidi Webster said food intolerances might exacerbate the behaviour of some with attention deficit disorders and autism. "Trialling the efficacy of dietary change can ... improve the quality of life for the that suffer with ADHD and autism," Ms Webster said.

Many studies have been done that indicate diet may be a factor in childhood behavior. A double blind, placebo-controlled study of with ADHD who also had signs of allergy was published in Annals of Allergy in May, 1994. The study showed that 73% responded favorably to treatment with a multiple-item elimination diet. A study on the Effect of nutritional supplements on attentional-deficit hyperactivity disorder published in the 1998 January-March volume of the Integr Physiol Behav Sci found that symptoms of ADHD were reduced by a change in diet. In the September 1999 issue of Pharmacological Research a report on Health benefits of docosahexaenoic acid. found that a deficiency in DHA was associated with ADHD and aggressive hostility. DHA is commonly found in fatty fish and in breastmilk.

As more people begin to look at their diets and at the additives in their food new research is being done on the effects that these chemicals could be having on our health.

Here is the thing, this is nothing new or "new news". The Feingold Association has been around over 35 years. Dr. Benjamin Feingold, who is now deceased discovered this "accidentally" when he was eliminating allergin foods in his patients.

Many Dr's in the past had lost their license some temporarily and some permanently for recommending the least restrictive management plan for ADD/ADHD when all they were doing in fact is modifying their diet and maybe treating for anti-fungal's that might have been caused in the gut from over use of antibiotics.

Asking patients to chose a "specific" brand was the only requirement and avoiding what wasn't on the list and let me tell you there were plenty to chose from.

In some instances it ended up being a handful of custody cases that caused these Dr's to almost lose their livlihood. Very sad! One parent not supporting the other one's minor intervention to help their child. The other one not believing that the food had nothing to do with their child's behavior. Or they were just "all boy" or she is just a "airy, spacey, artsy, flighty girl" or a "strong willed girl/boy" or if only they had more discipline!!!!!!

FIRST DO NO HARM!! It's an oath they must take.

Yet, the first thing they do is write a prescription because of the almighty drug companies......but don't get me started there.

Most Dr's will out right inform you that their Nutritional Education is minimal to none at best. Yet........."We are what we eat!" At least that is what I grew up knowing, oui? non?

So tell me why are we not taking more stock in these approaches before putting 18 month old babies on pharmacueticals that can provoke tourettes/ticks, etc..and a whole mess of other side effects not going to even mention here.

In Austrailia they have a more restrictive diet and following their diet is even more restrictive than the Feingold Diet as I had looked into that about 10-12 years ago.

Not all additives are bad "offender's" only several. Artificial colors are even worse. Sugar is not the bad guy its the the color or flavoring added that make the sugar "seem" like the offender. Sugar has been blamed for years because people just don't know.

Most people think they are doing their kid a favor because they are already "all natural". There are naturally occuring salicylate that occur in foods that "trigger" our kids and adults.

Example offenders containing a natural salicylate are things like:
Apples, Oranges, Tomatoes, Berries, Grapes, etc....

Not only did behavior become calmer and the ability to concentrate was achieved when successfully doing this nutritional program but people started to have better health in areas of Asthma, hives, nasal congestion, etc.... Even changing the depth to a higher range on the Spectrum of Autism, which had been the most exciting find.

NOW TAKE NOTE: There is NO silver bullet. This plan only lets you get a clean assesment of what you are really dealing with. Then further intervention can take place from there IF NECESSARY. The Feingold Program doesn't endorse nor bash any drugs. What I personally found was that maybe a very minute dose can be given instead which may not cause too much damage in the long run but might be the smallest amount which is better for your child in the long run. Also there is behavior modification and social skills programs. So many factors come into play and every child is on an individual basis.

You reqally are missing the point. The point is...do you medicate kids with drugs that will cause permanant brain damage. There is no basis for an arguement there. Or do you try and find alternatives that are healthy? That is the point in this post.

Excuse me, I did nothing of the sort. I simply stated that this is nothing new. Dietary and nutritional approaches have been recognized and studied for over 35 years.

According to the AMA, this was not recognized as an acceptable course of action in treating children with ADD/ADHD and behavior and learning difficulties. Tell it to the many Dr's who were reprimanded and lost their license over the years advocating for the same thing you speak of. We financially backed and fully supported both morally and emotionally one specific Dr. But several others who also almost lost everything standing up for themselves and our children. We followed their cases and supported them as well.

I agree that there is no argument over what to choose. I have been an Officer and sit on an International Board of Directors for 12 years traveling all over the country to advocate and educate medical professionals, educators and parents on this very thing.

Dennis we are in agreement and you really missed my point.
