Hi Wendy,

The only New Testament reference to "third heaven" is in 2 Corinthians 12 v 2 when Paul says he knows of a man who was 'caught up into the third heaven'. He is probably talking about himself but being modest.

According to my commentary "third heaven" is a Jewish expression for the immediate presence of God. I suspect you are going to get lots of wacky responses to this question but since this verse is all the Bible says about it anything else is pure speculation.

Yes I know I said I was taking a break from the blogs but I decided to make an exception to answer your question! {I've also put a poll on tonight so don't forget to vote}.

Peter

"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth"

Hi Wendy!

Once we had a short discussion about heaven, but there is actually much more to tell. However, when I cited John 3:13 ("NO ONE has ever gone into/ascended up to heaven EXCEPT THE ONE who came from heaven--the Son of Man."), the discussion expanded to where Enoch and Elijah might have been taken. I'll paste below the short comment together with two Ephesians verses, I hope it helps:

Eph. 4:9 - (What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions?

Eph. 4:10 - He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than ALL THE HEAVENS, in order to fill the whole universe/all things.)

HEAVEN: where God is, where Jesus came from and returned to, by himself alone, by his own power. I would avoid any "apparent contradiction" and maintain Jesus on a higher plan. I would rather prefer to understand that Enoch and Elijah were taken to a lower heaven level, as Paradise = 3rd heaven, as Paul experienced in 2 Chor. 12:2-4. Better to sustain an even higher heaven conception: ...above ALL heavens (Eph. 4-10)

Only God and Jesus can be so high until the New Heaven and Earth after Rev. 20 will take place.

I once heard also of a 7th heaven... but maybe you can check it out?
