Intro -- Embarking on a new journey

I am tired of acting "normal", but not being accepted anyway.

I might as well "play" the fool. And such I may be.

My Blogs from here on out will probably be a little--strange, lol.

Or a lot strange, my forte.

In case you're curious--

How many have been online on BigChurch over the past months?

This may give you an idea of what is close to an average of the real number of ACTIVE members online on BC worldwide; or at least of about how many are "online" at any particular time of the day.

Are there REALLY married men who don't like to cuddle?

I just heard it from a news person, as a joke. LOL.

I can understand making love, cuddling, and falling asleep together, and then wanting later on to sleep in separate beds or even separate rooms (so people can get some sleep), but not wanting to cuddle?? at all???

I want to see what you all have to say. LOL.

Thanks for visiting this Blog Post.

About the word HALLELUJAH! (Hallelu-Yah! HalleluYah! Alleluia! = Praise Yah!) Feb 3, 2007 9:01 pm

About the word HALLELUJAH!

VERSION: 2009-0522 Added section about the Septuagint (LXX). Minor corrections and/or clarifications. Added a missing u to a typical pronunciation of Yahshua.
VERSION: 2008-1119 I clarified some of the body of the text; and made some transliteration additions and corrections (hopefully). Edited it again while tired.
VERSION: 2008-0819 Font enlarged. I changed almost none of the body of the text.
PREVIOUS: 2007-0205. But, typo/missing punctuation fixed on 2/8.
FIRST POST: 2/3/2007 9:01 pm

Hallelujah! means "Praise Jah!", which is pronounced, "Praise Yah!" (not Praise JAH, with a J sound ).

Yah is the Name of the One, typically called God, in the Bible's Old Testament's (OT ) Hebrew/Aramaic extant texts.

That is, Yah is the Name of (the ) elohim, which most versions of the Bible typically translated as God, god, gods, and other words, depending on the passage. (The word elohim is actually plural.)

While Elohim's Name is called Yah, it is also called YHWH. More about this below.

The current spelling of Hallelujah has a long and dull history. Not really! LOL.

Actually, if you go back into the original spelling of the King James Version (KJV )--a hugely popular or influential translation since about the 1700s or so--you find it as Halleluiah.

So where did the J come from?

Well, in the 1700s, spelling had changed quite a bit from Shakespeare's time, which is about when the KJV (also called the Authorised/Authorized Version, or AV ) was published, which was around 1611 AD/CE.

If you look at the original KJV, Wow!, there are numerous differences in spellings. Even the SAME word is sometimes spelled multiple ways! LOL.

In an attempt to standardize the spelling, lots of words were changed. Many names and places and other word spellings where changed as well. Only, because of various influences, they did something that may seem strange to most of us today--

Where an I or a Y would seem to make more sense to many of us, they added a J!

Why a J?

I haven't read any history of this, but, based on other things I know, this is my GUESS as to why.

Today, you will find that in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA ), the J is pronounced as a Y sound. So, we can see that there is some history of the letter J being associated with the Y sound.

Also, English is considered a Germanic language!

And in German, the J is pronounced as a Y!

Also, in many scholarly fields at the time, including Biblical, there was a strong German-scholarship influence.

(In addition, there was a huge German population, in the USA anyway. So huge, I read that German was once supposedly considered as a national language for the USA! Or something like that.)

So, when the KJV word changers made their decisions, I imagine, they considered similar things.

I also imagine that they didn't expect people to start pronouncing words with a J sound that had long been pronounced with a Y sound. (Who knew??)

I WONDER if there are some articles in books, magazines, and other publications that point out how people were starting to say the Names differently, because--

EVEN THE NAME Iesus (YEH-z(h )uss ) WAS CHANGED TO Jesus, and ended up being pronounced GEE-zuss!

I imagine that people complained, but to no avail.

HOW could this happen?

Well, many times people are encouraged NOT to "wrangle" over words.

Also, in MANY languages, the Bible names are frequently pronounced differently. If you go to another country, YOUR name may end up being pronounced the way THEY pronounce it (if you don't complain ).

ADD to all this the various other pronunciations of J -- such as the French zh and the Spanish h sound -- one would think that using J would be the WORST choice for a spelling change! LOL. But there it is.

Is were changed to Js, at the beginning of some of the names and places.

Because of these things, today, instead of names and places that at least sound similar to the ORIGINALS, we have all kinds of pronunciations and spellings.

And some of these can be misleading to an unsuspecting reader! (More about this below.)

My suggestion is that in place of the letter I (which is actually okay in my book ), we use the letter Y instead of the confusing letter J. (I like the letter J, really I do. And it hardly gets any attention! LOL. But, I still think it's NOT the best choice.)

More about pronunciations of various names and places:

I for one would prefer to get back to the ORIGINAL pronunciations.

And yet others seem satisfied to stick with what is in common use today, no matter how far away from the original it is!

But discerning the original pronunciations from studying isn't always easy.

The Bible's original Hebrew/Aramaic didn't often have vowels between most consonants, nor did it have "vowel points" YET to indicate what vowel to use. Original speakers of the language didn't need it (much ), since they knew how to say the words already.

Since Hebrew supposedly became a "dead language", it was PRESUMED by many that in some cases the original pronunciations of various words were "lost".

Scholars and others might therefore disagree about original pronunciations.

Regardless, I may typically suggest something that is hopefully closer to the original than what is used today by most American-English-speaking people. Just a few examples follow.

Today, we see--

  • Jeremiah, instead of something like Yahremyah-- Y(schwa)-REM-Yah.*

  • Joseph, instead of something like Yahseph/Yahsef-- Y(schwa)-seph.*

  • Jesus, instead of something like Yahshua-- Y(schwa)-s/zh/sh/z-u-(schwa?) (dropping the S from the end, because Greek adds Ss at the end of many names and places ). It is interesting that the word "Joshua" has come down to us almost unscathed. The Greek Iesous is used for the "Joshua" of the OT. In some translations, it still says "Jesus" while others actually put in "Joshua" (e.g. the NASB does ). Several other pronunciations have been suggested or insisted upon by various.*

  • Jehovah, instead of something like YHWH/YHVH-- Y(schwa)-'-W(schwa)H. Many people today say YAH-weh, and it is often spelled today "Yahweh", though I don't know where that e came from. Ancient Greek (and Latin?) writers spelled the name in various ways using their language's letters. The letter v in "Jehovah" is, I think, a mistake; it seems to me that this mistake came from confusing the older typeface usage of a v for a u, and a u for a v. FOR EXAMPLE, the Name "Jesus" was actually spelled Iesvs in the original KJV! (Yes, with a v, not a u. They were "switched" in the usage of the typeface.) So, I think the spell-changers made an error here, RETAINING the v instead of using u, which was now more standard in typeface usage (unless you were going for that Old Latin look ). In addition, I think the spell-changers could have and maybe should have put in w instead of leaving it as a u. That is what I might have done. So, because of the changes in typeface usage and in spelling it "Jehovah", instead of something like Iehouah, or Yehowah / Y(schwa)-h(schwa?)-w(schwa?), people in many English-speaking countries say Je-HO-vah, which is totally wrong. In many other languages, however, it is STILL pronounced Y(schwa)-HO-wah, and even spelled Yehouah/Iehoua/Iehouah/Yehowah. (More follows.)*

    Schwa. Because of a supposed "vowel dissimilation", or maybe "vowel dissimulation" (!), that is said to have occurred around about the time of Messiah's appearance (or within a few hundred years around it), I suggested here using a "schwa" or similar sound, which I SUPPOSE might have been any of a number of vowel sounds, depending on the word in question, and its particular usage. Of course, if the actual vowel is uncovered, discovered, or revealed, I could suggest using that instead!*

    More about the Name YHWH.

    The Hebrew/Aramaic typically has just four letters in the original, something like Yod Heh Waw Heh (Y-H-W-H). Or, some people say they are Yod He Vav Heh (Y-H-V-H). But I am thinking that this may have come from the same confusion of the v vs. u usage in older typefaces.

    The vowel additions in "Iehouah" are SAID to come from the letters used in what is called the Masoretic Text. (Yawn?)

    The Masoretic Text is a Hebrew text where vowel points were added to the Hebrew text in between the original Hebrew letters. This was to aid a reader in pronouncing the Hebrew words.

    The problem is that by the time these vowel points were added -- sometime after Messiah came, maybe hundreds of years after, but supposedly before 1000AD/CE -- there was a Jewish TRADITION that avoided pronouncing the Name YHWH! It seems to me that this tradition began even BEFORE Messiah came, maybe a few hundred years before.

    Instead of saying the Name, they would SUBSTITUTE either elohim or adonai.

    This Jewish tradition filtered into Christian tradition, writings, and translations.

    So now, instead of seeing something like YHWH in the over 6,800 places in the OT where It is found, you usually see "the LORD", with LORD in small caps (or maybe in all caps, especially online).

    The Septuagint (LXX). To confuse things further, certain editions of the Septuagint (LXX), a Greek translation of the the OT -- said by some to have been used by certain early Christians -- took the Name YHWH and substituted some Greek word for it, like kurios. Even more confusing is that kurios was used to represent the OT's adonai. So, both the Name YHWH and the title adonai were represented using the word kurios. The word kurios is often translated into English as "lord", "Lord", or "LORD".

    Not all editions of the LXX substituted kurios for YHWH. Some apparently had or have the Name YHWH in them instead. Some even used Hebrew and/or Aramaic lettering within the Greek texts! (Very cool, I think.)

    To confuse things even further, if YHWH was found next to the word elohim or adonai in the OT, then instead of rendering it "the LORD", most ENGLISH-language versions would put in other words or phrases, depending on the Bible version. For example, one might put in "Lord GOD", with GOD in all caps.

    Written as four letters, the Name YHWH is called The Tetragrammaton. (And "oddly" enough, that word actually means something like "four letters"! LOL.)

    As letters, the Name is usually written in English as Y-H-W-H.

    Other forms that some people use: J or I instead of Y. And/Or, U, or maybe V, instead of W.

    I prefer simply to write YHWH or YHWH.

    About Hallelujah / Hallelu-Yah:

    In addition to seeing YHWH as the Name in the Hebrew/Aramaic text, sometimes the Name is simply Yah.

    In English, Yah has been preserved in the words Hallelujah/Halleluiah (from the Hebrew/Aramaic ) and Alleluia (from the Greek ).

    Each of these words means, "Praise Ja(h)", or better, "Praise Ia", or better still, "Praise Yah!"

    Hallelu-Yah! is considered by many to be an imperative, that is, a Command or exhortation.

    As a Command, Hallelu-Yah! would be, I believe, the most frequently found, specific Command-PHRASE in all of Scripture. (Though Scripture does talk quite a lot about how we are to Love!)

    We also frequently find the Name Yah in names of people in the OT, such as in the name Isaiah / Isa-Yah, Jeremiah / Yerem-Yah, etc.

    MISC:

    We find the Hebrew/Aramaic word el also used in names and places, as in in the name Israel. El, I have read, is a shorter form of elohim, a plural word actually, and very frequently used in the OT.

    The word elohim is not used nearly as often as the Name YHWH is.

    Neither is adonai, typically translated as "Lord" (capital L, lowercase "ord" ) or "lord" (all lowercase).

    And actually, The Name YHWH is used in the OT thousands of more times than either elohim OR adonai!

    SOLUTIONS--

    I would think that YHWH elohim would want the Name said and written by those who honor YHWH elohim.

    At least I believed elohim USED to.

    And except for His Name being profaned, YHWH elohim still may. (Pray about it.)

    However, historically, His Name fell into disuse through tradition. People wanted to avoid using the Name "in vain", as it says in the Ten Commandments in the Law of Moses -- "You shall not take the Name YHWH your elohim in vain!" (that is, to no Good purpose ). But unfortunately, this avoidance appears to have turned into a tradition to not use it at all!

    Not using it all -- as tradition has sometimes suggested or even dictated -- may have been an error of huge proportions.

    For the Scripture promised that,
    "Whoever will call with the Name YHWH will be saved/delivered/preserved!".
    --Joel 2:32.
    (Or, 3:5, if using the Tanakh.)

    And this is quoted in the NT!

    Scripture asks of us this--
    "From the rising of the sun till the time that it goes down, the Name of YHWH should be praised".
    --Psalm 113:3.

    Scripture EVEN exhorts ALL flesh, when it says,
    "Everything that has BREATH should Praise Yah!
    "You! Praise Yah!"
    --Psalm 150:6.

    According to Scripture history, people have been calling on the Name of YHWH since the days of Genesis before the Flood. (Genesis 4:26.) Throughout the OT, people did so.

    Even the New Testament indicates that we should continually praise His Name from our hearts, yet with our LIPS! (Hebrews 13:15.) "Christians" were to do this by Christ.

    As believers in YHWH and in His Name, believers need to care enough to properly USE and PRESERVE the use of His Name.

    If people in ancient times -- and during the times of translations -- HAD cared a lot more about this, and about how people and place names were to be pronounced, I believe we would have a lot less confusion about it today.

    PRAY ABOUT THIS. For, according to "Joel", and quoted in the NT, it says--

  • "Whoever will call with the Name YHWH will be saved/delivered/preserved". --Joel 2:32. (Or, 3:5, if using the Tanakh publication.)

    It COULD therefore be an issue affecting salvation.

    The correct pronunciation of the Name YHWH:

    Though I have studied this, I have found no absolute, scholarly, written consensus on how to pronounce The Name.

    I have prayed about it, or course, but, not all my prayers are answered as fully as I would like!

    And YHWH seems to continue to be silent to me on this seemingly important issue.

    Though one can still say Yah.

    Please pray that the Glory of His Name will be restored. (And that YHWH elohim will reveal the correct pronunciation, even to me. Thanks.)

    Hallelu-Yah!

    About "Praise Yah!"

    The most common forms of "Praise Yah!" in the English language are Hallelujah!, from Hebrew/Aramaic, and Alleluia!, in Greek and Latin.

    Taking the English Hallelujah, and using the substitution of Y for I, instead of J, as I spoke about it above, one gets--Halleluyah!

    Then, to emphasize the Name of Yah within the word, I myself capitalize the first letter of The Name within the word. Sometimes I add a hyphen to make The Name stand out. As in--

    Hallelu-Yah!
    Or,
    HalleluYah!

    Either way works for me, depending on how I use it.

    And of course, HalleluYah! means

    Praise Yah!

    "Praise" means to "express warm approval or admiration of", or as I simply put it, to "say something good about"! LOL.

    C'mon. DO it. Say something Good about Yah.

    The "Our Father" says that we should pray something like "Father... Hallowed be Your Name".

    Hebrews 13:15 says that we can "praise" "God" BY GIVING THANKS TO HIS NAME with our LIPS.

    And it says to do this CONTINUALLY.

    So then--

    Yah, Thank You!

    Thank You, Yah!

    Amen?

  • N.B. In SOME places above, I used the word schwa and/or the apostrophe ' instead of picking a vowel. In some cases, I pick a vowel. I do not always personally have enough information to fully know which vowel to choose over another, so I sometimes go with my best research or best guess.

    DISCLAIMERS -- I am not a Bible teacher. I originally posted this in a bit of a hurry, being somewhat tired. I did do a bit of editing later on, more than once, though typically on very little sleep, or in a hurry. Other than that, I tried to do my best, though without using Bibliographic references.

    SOURCES -- Much of this I learned over the years, via lectures, pamphlets, Web sites, and books. It would take quite some time to find many of the sources (if I could even remember them). Some of them would be considered to be a bit on the fringe. In college, I did a quarter-project research paper on the Name (over 20 pages). Much of the information here came from those sources.

    For you are dead, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

    When Christ, our Life, shall appear, then you shall also appear with Him, in glory.

    -- Colossians 3: 3-4

    Other interesting verses--

    Eph 2: 1 And you {He has made alive}, who were dead in trespasses and sins...
    Eph 2: 5 Even when we were dead in sins, {He} has made us alive together with Christ, (by grace you are saved )...
    Col 2: 13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses...
    1Pet 2: 24 Who His Own Self bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto Righteousness--by Whose stripes you were healed.
    Rev 1: 5 And from Iesou Christo {{that is, Yahshua Messiah}}, the faithful witness, the First-begotten/Firstborn from the dead, and the Prince/Ruler of the kings of the Earth. To Him Who loved us, and washed us from our sins in His Own blood...

    Gal 2: 20 I am crucified with Christ. Nevertheless I live. Yet not I, but Christ lives in me. And the life that I now live in the flesh*, I live by the Faith of the Son of God, Who Loved me, and gave Himself for me.
    * {{that is, physical body}}

    Col 2: 12 Buried with Him in baptism, in which you are also risen with {Him} through the Faith of the working of God, Who has raised Him from the dead.
    1Pet 3: 21 ... baptism does also now save us -- not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience -- by the resurrection of Iesou Christo {{Yahshua Messiah}}!

    There are other verses that are related to these subjects.

    {Very violent. Lots of blood and flying, dropping body parts, dead bodies. Starts off with the seemingly moral and ethical king of Sparta slaying messengers from Persia, which to me was an act of murder. There's a bribe/blackmail/near-rape type of scene. Yuck, yuck, and triple yuck. I am practically sorry I paid to go see this. I don't see watching it again in my future. Other than that, much of it was fairly well-made. Too bad the "evil laugh" and camera focus on a man's eyes were together so embarrassingly stupid. I'm glad I went alone. The theme, "Remember us" has got me thinking that what I may remember is the stupidity of a policy and mentality that never allows for retreat, or for that matter, surrender (although the latter would depend on the "enemy" ). The Passion, also directed by Mel Gibson, was very violent as well. Seemed a bit slow for all the action. I am guessing it has or comes close to holding the record for the longest chase scene on foot (unless the Lord of the Rings counts, LOL ). A bit slow in the telling, I thought, but I liked the general storyline struggle concept. That the whole movie was doing with Subtitles didn't bother me. Parts were pretty funny. Because of the WAY violence was handled, I don't know if I ever want to see another Mel Gibson film. It's really too bad, because the film was pretty decent otherwise.}

    {Lots of violence, but not terribly "gratuitous". Part of the government gets more of a bad rap through this, as yet another secret section of an organization is behind more assassinations. In this film Bourne gets to rediscover some of his past, and why someone in a previous film said to him that he would always be a killer. (Really??) I imagine that this will be the last film in this series, but who knows.}

    Breach (PG-13) ##-##.5
    Chris Cooper, Ryan Phillippe, Laura Linney, Dennis Haysbert, Gary Cole, Caroline Dhavernas
    Action/Adventure, Suspense/Thriller
    2/16/2007. 1 hr. 50 min.
    {The attempt to trap a supposed spy in what they call the "worst" international security breach in this country is told in this movie. For all that, we see very little action, and very little spy activity. Most of it is an attempt to explore the reading of the outer actions of the man suspected of spying. The film works somewhat, but it runs slowly. There is some suspense, but it is not thriller; and calling it action/adventure would be pushing it. The film ENDS on a sour note, as we find out that some person of note is not only in prison, but is being continually kept in solitary confinement, 23 hours out of 24 in the day. Isn't there some International law or national law against such treatment of prisoners? Moreover, it begs the question: WHY? Was the person in prison maybe not really as guilty as we are led to believe? Makes me want to go visit just to find out. (About 40 minutes after this, I saw Bridge to Terabithia.)}
    {Saw 5:00PM, Sa. 3/3/2007.}

    Bridge to Terabithia (PG) ##-##.5
    Josh Hutcherson, AnnaSophia Robb, Robert Patrick, Zooey Deschanel
    Action/Adventure, Drama, Family, Sci-Fi/Fantasy
    2/16/2007. 1 hr. 35 min.
    {Loss throughout the first parts of the movie, and then a death of a major character, permeate this movie. If you plan to take a child under maybe the age of 13 or 14, or even at that age or above, I suggest you read about this, and pray about preparing your child. The death comes out of nowhere, and affects the rest of the movie. Terabithia is mostly imagined throughout the film, and we don't actually get to see much of it at all, except for a few animated creatures and scenes, until the last few minutes of the movie. One wonders whether Disney was trying their hand at making a film using a budget of an inexpensive independent film. If they spent more than a few hundred thousand, or maybe a million or two--in addition to what they paid the actors--I would ask why. The boy's reticence to really get into the imagining tends to drag the film down, though the nearly insufferable cheeriness of the girl is constant. In fact, her amazing Heidi-like/Annie-like exuberance makes you wonder how she could have been so "friendless" at previous schools, when her dad tells it to someone. She's incredibly friendly. It's unlikely, if not impossible, that she was so friendless. On the other hand, when there are adults like that, they tend to drive others away, and can be a catalyst for people thinking they are shallow, or what is wrong with them that they're so gleeful. On the other hand, I WISH people were more like her, in those respects, though her imagination runs wild, and contributes to nearly knocking the boy off balance mentally, late in the film. I LIKE movies with a point to them; but I am not sure what the point of this movie is: maybe a preparation for children for life's occasional meanness and losses that can come without any warning. Certain of the losses in this movie are not small ones, though while some of the people are "poor" monetarily--or so they try to lead us to believe--they're not having to live in abject poverty or starvation, like so much of the world supposedly is. However, being poor, sadly some people in the movie treat them as lesser people. I appreciate an attempt to address such concerns; but the failings or distractions in this movie were too much for me to really appreciate it much, as mean-spirited children continue to bully from start practically to finish, and none of the other children have the sense to bring adults into it to help stop it. But then, neither did I when I was in Grade School. PEOPLE, teach your children well to stand up for others, for the oppressed, and teach them how to go about that while not coming under attack themselves. Teach them how to band together (without becoming a gang or become bullying in mentality themselves. It's amazing what people will do in a group that they would not do alone.) If we do not have the Wisdom for all that, at least prepare them for the eventual evil treatment, lest they be taken by surprise, and feel crushed and depressed, having had little to no emotional and mental preparation. Prepare them for the onslaught of adolescence as well. It can really help to know: "Do not wake up love, until the right moment". Children need constant preparation as they enter their teen years. Give it to them. Talk with them. And let them know you are really listening. (Saw Breach about 40 minutes before this.)}

    {About as subversive as a movie can get, against Christian-related leaders, and easily-swayed followers. I hated this film because of it. I missed maybe the first 45 minutes, but that's okay, it is unlikely that my opinion would change. Someone who thinks that preachers are in it for the money, attention, or power might like it, as would those who think that Christians are dumb in general. My opinion is that Humans in general are easily swayed, even brainwashed, no matter what opinion you are of to begin with. Humans can also be stupidly stubborn and cynical, etc., not to mention proud. No one is immune. But I am getting off the topic here. God help us if any leaders teaching us are at all like this. Now I know what Elmer Gantry is about. Slow. I'd rather watch a documentary. Winning 3 Academy Awards / Oscars should have been a HUGE wake-up call to the churches about where Hollywood's mindset was at in 1960.}

If I were to hypothesize a takeover of the Human Race, I'd say it's already happened, thousands of years ago, and mostly in our minds (and bodies). Don't you ever feel like you're being played? There may be something to the concept of "destiny" after all. For this concept, or a similar one, compare the films Stranger Than Fiction (PG-13), The Truman Show, and several others, The Matrix not left out. The truth may lie between the lines. And whoever has it may not want everyone (if anyone) to know it. Then again, there is the song "Unwritten", as sung by Natasha Bedingfield. (Weird, I made comments using the word Unwritten in my 2006-2005 MOVIES list, under Stranger.... I wonder if the song was out by then. Probably.) Or has all of history already been predetermined? There is absolutely no reason why this couldn't have been somewhat crude while keeping it PG or PG-13 (more likely ). I'd not mind seeing a edited-for-TV version, as it has some touching moments. Unfortunately, this one had lots of cussing, sexuality, nudity, drug use, and yeah, I don't want to see it again. I wish I hadn't watched this version at all. It makes certain foul-mouthed, crude folks look ever so decent, even though they are shown intact with their crudeness and ignorance. Neurotic and verbally-abusive behavior permeate this film. It's part of the humor, and almost an exposé on current, trashy American culture today--well, it could have been, had it not been filled with gratuitous crud. If this were to become edited into a PG-like film, my rating would likely change to a ##.5 or maybe even ###. Or maybe not.}

    {Well, what can I say. It was corny, but nice. I like a movie with a message though, usually, and this tried to teach one. I don't really want to ruin it for anyone by making obnoxious comments, so I'll state that some people have supposedly thought it was Jim Carrey's finest performance. Well, as far as the movies I've seen him in, it's one of his few "dramatic" performances, and maybe the only one I've seen where he isn't acting goofy; only, he still seems to come off goofy in this film. (But maybe that's me.) Maybe somebody could give this guy anti-goofy lessons. I have a hard time taking him seriously because of the movies I've seen him in: The Mask (I liked ); Dumb and Dumber (or the other one ); The Grinch (so-so ); Liar, Liar (funny ); The Truman Show ("That's amazing", but, still goofy ). SO, my mind had a hard time adjusting to him in DRAMA. Slightly goofy drama, but drama nonetheless. I kinda of liked it, although I think I identified with the main character a little too much at points. LOL. If you "lost" your memory, then were to get it back after some time (even years maybe ), during which you started up a whole new life, would you choose the current life or the old one?     {Yeah, yeah. What's he doing watching this? Good question. Did I LEARN anything? I don't think so. Reference is made to an earlier story called "The Picture of Dorian Gray", for which Oscar Wilde and Albert Lewin wrote the screenplay for the 1945 film. Synopsis: (What?? from me?? Lol.) When a would-be photographer is spotted by an evil one (or the evil one ), he is tempted to become a supermodel. From here, vanity and ego take over his seemingly decent nature, until he sinks into the depths of depravity, but not until he makes a pact in blood to keep his attractive, youthful looks from aging. Though he is even warned that the original Dorian Gray's story didn't turn out well for him, he does it anyway, on his own, as a silent agreement, then verbally agreeing to "forever". Sick. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton played in a similar film called "Doctor Faustus (1967 )", a film based on a play by Christopher Marlowe (d. 1593, yes, in the 1500s ). I saw this film as a boy. Creepy, but slow, very slow, I thought. (And he never gets the girl! LOL.) Of any film I recall, similar to this story, I preferred "Bedazzled (2000 )", ##-##.5. (Yes, I saw that too. LOL.) In all cases, the person who makes the pact or deal does NOT get what he hopes for. Either the disappointment is external or internal. In any case, power corrupts, especially the kinds of power offered in certain of these stories. And while pleasure increases, internal enjoyment decreases. And it's more than just the concept of "diminishing returns" at work. For, the one who keeps wanting more can never be satisfied! Nearly quoted in the movie, "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" Matthew 16: 26; Mark 8: 36.}
    {Saw, ending between 3 and 5AM, Sun. 9/2/2007.}

    Pan's Labyrinth (R) ##-### (if edited)
    Sergi Lopez, Maribel Verdu, Ivana Baquero
    Art House/Foreign, Sci-Fi/Fantasy
    12/29/2006. 1 hr. 50 min.
    {Wow. Yet another violent film. I didn't expect that in this fantasy thriller-drama film. Wow. They won't be getting many teenagers to see this film in the theaters with the R rating. Very graphic. This is like a chapter taken out of a combination of the Lord of the Rings, and The Little Mermaid, but with a Mel Gibson-violence-type director. ENOUGH of the overdoing the violence stuff already--double yuck. All the violence and cruelty aside, I liked the film overall. With some serious editing of the violence, it could be made for TV, and even for children. If so, I'd love to see it again. Subtitled. In Spanish.}
    {Saw 10:50PM, Fri. 1/19/2007.}

    Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (PG-13) ###
    Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Geoffrey Rush, Jack Davenport
    Adventure, Adventure Comedy, Fantasy, Fantasy Adventure, Sea Adventure, Swashbuckler
    Thu. 5/24/2007. 2 hr. 45 min.
    {#3. Yep. More pirates. More violent, I guess, than the others. Starts with hangings of those even remotely connected with pirates, including a boy. (They at least cut away visually when his body is dropped.) Lots of sword fighting and shooting further on. Themes related to the land of the dead are prominent. There is a "goddess" theme as well, along the lines of the kinds of sea gods and sea goddesses that have been heard of in sea legends and myths. The film was a bit long, almost 3 hours. With previews, it took about 3:20. There was a great point in the film where an Intermission could have been. I liked it better than 2.}
    {Saw 7:15PM, Sun. 5/27/2007.}

    Premonition (PG-13) ##.5
    Sandra Bullock, Julian McMahon, Nia Long, Kate Nelligan, Amber Valletta, Peter Stormare

    3/16/2007. 1 hr. 50 min.
    {Woman, married with two daughters, finds herself living out the days of a week of her husband's death in jumbled time order. Through it she remembers what occurs on each day. And looks for ways to face whether there is anything she can do about it, whether there is any way she can stop her husband from being killed, and whether she even really wants to stop it. Cool time-travel-based idea; but didn't do a lot for me. Maybe it was partly because of the people behind us, and the guy there that just wouldn't quit coughing. What is it with people putting up their shoes on theater seats anyway? Not cool.}
    {Saw 10:35PM, Fri. 3/16/2007.}

    The Reaping (R) ##.5
    AnnaSophia Robb, David Morrissey, Hilary Swank, Idris Elba, Stephen Rea
    Suspense/Thriller, Horror, Supernatural Horror
    Thu. 4/5/2007. 1 hr. 36 min.
    {Woman who used to believe--who because of loss, lost her trust in God, and is now into science--investigates what appear to be miracles. Most, she thought, had scientific explanations. But, this last series of events--similar to the 10 plagues that came upon Egypt in the Bible's book of Exodus--throw her for a loop. Finally, she seems to have encountered true supernatural events/miracles.}

    Action, Adventure, Crime, Drama, Suspense, Thriller
    {Forgettable the first time I saw it. Weeks later two of us who had seen it together could not recall whether or not we had seen it, or what it was about! Lol. So, we watched it again! LOL. And, it's a pretty decent action film. Not intensely paced, and a bit disjointed, but overall pretty well done. For example, jumping back and forth during the helicopter scene took away from the climax and stun of that moment, both times I saw it.}

    Voices: Tom Hanks (supposedly ), Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria
    animated comedy, Satire, Comedy, Domestic Comedy
    {One of the funniest dumb movies I've seen in a while. Lots of very inappropriate, gratuitous violence, crudity, and irreverent humor. Some cussing. (What did you expect? LOL.). Not terribly graphic, though. Lots of laughs in the theater from ADULTS. Many of the children around me, though, didn't laugh. This is almost more for adults than for children; and actually, I wouldn't recommend or suggest it for children. Teens might get a kick out of it.}
    7/27/2007. 1 hr. 27 min.

    Spider-Man 3 (PG-13) ##.5
    Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Tobey Maguire
    Fri. 5/4/2007. 2 hr. 20 min.
    {The best Spider-Man yet?? Well, we didn't think so. But it wasn't terrible or bad or anything, unless you think comic-book stories generally are by default. Some of the acting seems to be getting dumber, though. (Please stop.) With so much action, I was having a hard time not yawning. I WAS tired, and it WAS late! LOL. I'd rather see Hitch! LOL. (Yeah I liked Hitch. Though what that has to do with THIS movie, I don't know. LOL.) }
    {Saw 10:10PM, Sa., 5/5/2007.}

    Stardust (PG-13) {Theater, then DVD.} ##.5

    Drama, Sci-Fi (sort of)
    1962. 1 hr. 13 min.
    {Somewhat dull end-of-the-world movie--set as more of a Drama than an Action or Sci-Fi film--explores how people might act if faced with the potential of dying from an imminent attack. A lot of the dialog sounds very early 1960s. Would people act this dumb? I'll take Star Trek over this any day. LOL. (They were nearly contemporaries.)}
    {Saw ending around ~8:35PM, 8/30/2007.}

    Transformers (PG-13) ##.5
    Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Jon Voight, John Turturro, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Rachael Taylor, Anthony Anderson
    Action, Alien Invasion Films, Science Fiction, Sci-Fi Action
    7/3/2007. 2 hr. 23 min.
    {Wow. The animation. Wow. I kind of liked the film, until the robots started to talk. Then it got dumber than I would have liked. It was kind of like the Ents in the Lord of the Rings, only after drinking a little dumb-water. LOL. But it wasn't so bad that I couldn't like it at all. Just closer to a cartoon than I would have liked. Inconsistent crunching, crashing, bashing--all loud--and then tenderly swinging under bridges (very quietly ), without being detected. The film lost me, in the almost-believable fashion, when a large-sized robot turned into an item that could be kept in a purse. Good grief. But Wow, the animation. Impressive! LOL.}
    {Saw 10:20PM, 7/5/2007.}

    SAW THESE AGAIN, FROM PREVIOUS YEARS:

    Clash of the Titans (PG) {On DVD. Previously on TV.} ##-##.5
    6/12/1981. 1 hr. 58 min.
    Laurence Olivier, Harry Hamlin, Claire Bloom, Judi Bowker, Maggie Smith
    Fantasy, Fantasy Adventure, Mythological Fantasy, Sword-and-Sandal
    {Not bad. Old animation.}
    {Saw AGAIN, ending ?PM, 10/2x?/2007.}

    Illusion (2004) (PG-13, but could be R for the cussing) ###-##.5
    Kirk Douglas, Michael A. Goorjian, Karen Tucker, Ron Marasco, Gibson Frazier. Plus, Richmond Arquette, Bryan Cranston, Eugeniy Voronin, Ted Raimi, Kristen Clement
    1 hr. 46 mins.
    {A movie that shows that our lives are a movie. This movie could get a person to ask, Is life a show (or program ) that can be replayed? I liked this film except for the cussing by the actor Kirk Douglas, playing a film director. The concept of the film, however, is disturbing. It's a well-done independent film. You can see All Movie Guide's Jason Buchanan's comments on Blockbuster's site. Excerpt from Mr. Baines' "editor": "All that's ever left of a person is what's recorded on paper, or on film. A few lines, a few scenes. Then you're in the {{film}} can. Deep down, everyone knows that all we are is a brief flicker on the screen in the dark, an illusion." Is this true?? Tell all what you think, at Life is a movie.}
    {Saw AGAIN, ending ?PM, 10/10-11?/2007. Saw in a theater in early 2006.}

    Live Free or Die Hard (PG-13) {Also saw on DVD.} ###-##
    Bruce Willis, Justin Long, Timothy Olyphant, Cliff Curtis, Maggie Q, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kevin Smith
    Action, Action Thriller
    Wed. 6/27/2007. 2 hr. 10 min.
    {I liked it, but Wow, over the top. I got the impression from Bruce Willis that he thought it was dumb that he was doing another Die Hard movie, but what do I know. All Die Hard films are violent, and filled with cussing. (Why cussing? ) If you're going to watch this, I suggest you see the Theatrical version which was rated PG-13 rather than the Unrated one.}
    {Saw 10:45PM, 6/28/2007. After the film, the song "Ever Present Past" by Paul McCartney played. (It has the phrase "my ever-present past" in it.) It's from the album called Memory Almost Full. (There are two versions, one a double-disc version.}
    {Saw AGAIN 11/24/2007 on DVD, the Unrated version. Watch the Theatrical one instead.}

    Stranger Than Fiction (PG-13) {Also saw on DVD.} ###.5
    Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Queen Latifah, Will Ferrell
    11/10/2006. 1 hr. 53 min.
    Comedy, Comedy Drama, Drama, Fantasy, Fantasy Comedy, Sci-Fi, Tragi-comedy
    {COMMENTS FROM MY 2006 LIST: Because of the concept, I knew I wanted to see it, though from the previews, I thought it would be dumb. I went though, because in truth, it has seemed that I myself have been recently going through something similar. (No joke.) But not the same, I think! LOL. I was surprised that Will Ferrell did such a good job; he (practically ) never got out of hand! And I kind of liked Dustin Hoffman's detached acting as a respected literary person. Now, HERE'S A QUESTION: Is your life written out, ALL of it, before it occurs, or are parts still Unwritten? SEE comments in Deja Vu (Déjà Vu) {2006 list}.}
    {If your life feels like a show for others to watch, come comment about it at Life is a movie.}
    {Saw AGAIN, ending ?PM, 9/X/2007.}

    The Truman Show (PG) {On DVD.} ####
    Jim Carrey, Ed Harris, Noah Emmerich, Natascha McElhone, Laura Linney
    6/5/1998. 1 hr. 43 min.
    Comedy Drama, Drama, Psychological Drama, Media Satire, Sci-Fi
    {Stunning idea. (Not the first time I've seen the film.) This and the Matrix appear to have spawned several other, similar films, including "Stranger Than Fiction", "Illusion", etc. Is YOUR life a show for others to watch? If it feels that way, come comment about it at Life is a movie.}

    RATINGS GUIDE for MOVIES SEEN by me

    Who wants to see some shows? LOL. (If maybe so, read more.)

    VERSION: 8/18/2008 (changed font sizes ), 6/26/2008 (handle name updated ), 4/16/2008, 10/15/2007. (Detailed edit notes are at the end.)

    INTRO:

    These ratings and notes are related to my MOVIES lists found at the link below.

    They are NOT for my TV or SHOWS lists.

    An Overview, and long-winded notes about my movie-watching, are also below. LOL.

    RATINGS GUIDE:

    BY REQUEST!

    VERSION: 10/15/2007.

    NOTE: Ratings on my movies lists are by me. They go from # to ##### (5). They are mostly self-explanatory. They do NOT imply appropriateness or lack of it for Christians, children, or anyone else. They are intended mostly for a General audience, Christian and non-. Each movie's rating (elsewhere ), and even how I go about rating, are both subject to change without notice.

    ##### -- I'd really, really want to see it again. And/Or Supremely made.
    ####.5 - I'd really want to see it again. And/Or Very, very well made.
    #### --- I would probably want to see it again. And/Or Very well made.
    ###.5 -- I would likely want to see it again. And/Or Well made.
    ### ---- I would likely want to see it again, someday. And/Or Pretty well made.
    ##.5 --- I might or might not want to see it again. Maybe SO. And/Or Not bad.
    ## ----- I might or might not want to see it again. Maybe NOT. And/Or So-so.
    #.5 ---- I would probably not want to see it again without good cause. And/Or Not so badly made that it should never be seen by SOMEone.
    # ------ If I saw it again, it would probably be to see if it was really as bad as I thought. LOL. And/Or "Bad".
    .5 ----- See one # rating. Will I rate something this low ever?? Lol.
    0 ------ See .5 rating.
    - ------ Negative ratings??? Like bad news?? lol. Sometimes I want to, but typically restrain myself. LOL.

    Anyway, if you want to read more about what I like and don't like in general, I go into it more below. Otherwise--

    MY MAIN MOVIES AND SHOWS BLOG:
    Who wants to DO something, like see SHOWS or MOVIES, or catch the SIGHTS?.

    As you may see, my ratings typically indicate how much I might want to see it again, and/or they may somewhat-reflect my opinion of the quality of film production, especially on earlier lists. (Sorry if this seems confusing or inconsistent.) There is usually a close connection between the two because I don't usually like badly-done movies. LOL. But there may be exceptions. The films on my lists are therefore somewhat subjectively rated.

    OVERVIEW:

    VERSION: 10/15/2007.

    I enjoy most movie genres, even some of the better romantic comedies! LOL. Really. And have been watching more movies recently than in previous years.

    I AVOID, AVOID, AVOID porn and MOST Horror--especially slasher films--on principle. (Not to mention, Yuck! LOL.)

    Many movies listed, I saw in movie theaters, some at IMAX, and some on on DVD.

    MY COMMENTS about each movie are NOT usually intended to be complete. I may or may not add more later. And they are NOT really "reviews", per se, just comments. And they often do not have a Synopsis. (Someone asked me to write reviews; maybe when I get PAID to! LOL. But for now, just comments, as I feel inclined.)

    If you want to know whether a Christian "should" watch a particular movie or not, let me know how close you are to Puritan and how close to worldly! lol. (Not funny.)

    I felt almost obligated to comment on each film, though in some cases I didn't have much to say. (Many times I just don't remember much about it. With the little sleep I get at times, it's amazing I remember anything at times! lol.) My comments are basically just what came to mind at some point, if anything, in some cases months after seeing a film.

    Spoilers? Well, how much of a movie can you describe without spoiling the plot or some anticipation for the film? I try to avoid it when I can. If you feel I "spoiled" something, email me, and YHWH-permitting, I may consider removing or changing it. Thank you!

    The Internet Movie Database (IMDB ) Web site has lots of details about most films, as do some of the video rental Web sites.

    For reviews, there are tons of customer reviews on these sites, on Amazon, and other places where videos are sold. Also, there are critics' reviews all over the Internet. There are even some Christian-review places.

    So, with so much information already out there, WHY am I doing this? I don't know. The lists don't seem to get many views. But, if someone really wanted to know about ME, and what kinds of films I watch; well, there they are! Lol.

    ANYWAY, if you're in town, and you want to watch a film--maybe even one I've already seen--consider emailing me here, or maybe commenting on one of my latest MOVIES lists (though it might be a while before I see that ). I can't guarantee we'll have a "movie date", but if YHWH wills and we live, I may consider it.

    NOTES about MOVIES SEEN lists:

    VERSION: 10/15/2007.

    MORE ABOUT ME AND MY MOVIE WATCHING--

    I already stated up front that I like most genres--except porn and most actual horror, on principle--but this is a bit more about what I do and don't like to watch.

    I typically like to watch something with a purpose, a meaning. Meaningless drivel isn't really appealing, well, sometimes! LOL.

    I can often like well-made movies, and the classics, if there isn't too much in them that is offensive to me.

    I usually find gratuitous violence or sex or cussing OFFENSIVE. Some violence doesn't necessarily bother me in a show, when necessary, but the concept of showing it for people to really get into it is gross. I don't like blood and gore. Blood in a medical show, or when necessary, I don't mind too much. But gore?? Well, SOME of it is okay, again, when it really fits. I don't need to see someone get his throat slashed though. Or almost any other body part. In my whole life I've only thought "fitting" one cuss word in one movie, and in one song. Many sex scenes are uncomfortable to see. I can even find certain types of kissing on screen to be uncomfortable to watch. (I mean, Why do we have to see that?? We don't.) On occasion, though, the romantic peck is nice to see.

    I don't like dumb. Well, some dumb is okay. Yet if it's trying to be funny, but it's only painful, then I don't like it. LOL. I don't like most slapstick. I wasn't big into Laurel and Hardy, or The Three Stooges. (Too disrespectful, and too dumb for me.) I did mostly like the TV show The Addams Family, but not the Munsters (especially Herman Munster ), if that tells you anything. LOL. I mostly liked I Dream of Jeannie, but not the main male actor (all the "magic" aside ).

    As a boy, I watched TV for hours and hours a DAY. Now, maybe four hours a WEEK! LOL. (Unless there's a movie or special.)

    I don't watch most of the News, as it's really the same-old, and mostly BAD news that I don't think I really need to know about personally. If news were USEFUL, I might want to watch that!

    I do NOT typically watch Sports, unless it's something big, or something I used to play competitively. If someone else wants to watch, well then maybe on occasion I could.

    I like some of the better romantic comedies! LOL. Really. BUT, I don't like overly-sentimental schlock. Or, again, dumb. But I don't usually mind crying at a movie. LOL. (Well, maybe. LOL.) A number of movies I have seen brought tears to my eyes. (And many of them were not romance or sentimental themes.) Sometimes even TV shows can do that! LOL.

    Speaking of comedies, if they're dumb, really dumb, then forget it! (Dumb and Dumber, lol, etc., maybe being an exception, I dunno ). When I think of one of the worst bigger-production movies I've seen, Ishtar usually comes to mind. The TV show M.A.S.H. can be humorous. As can Seinfeld, Friends, Ugly Betty, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and lots of others! Lol.

    Regarding British productions, I liked the TV show The Avengers, with character Emma Peel, but would have to go back and see Monty Python again to see whether I liked it. (I was too young then.)

    I started liking reading as a boy (again ), and literature, in large part because of the Fantasy genre. So, I do tend to like some of those (like the more-recent Lord of the Rings movies and books ). Many Fantasy films, though, are too dumb for me to like much. And some are just disappointing (like The Phantom Tollbooth, one of my favorite books, but far less favorite films ). There were earlier Lord of the Rings movies that were animated, and also The Hobbit, but I didn't like their animated version either, though I enjoyed the books, and liked the later LOTR films. (Where was the poetry though!? )

    What else can I say? LOL. From Summer 2006 to Fall 2007, on average I might have seen in THEATERS one movie maybe every 1-3 weeks or so. But as I have begun a special video rental program, I may watch less in theaters--depending one what is playing--and maybe more at "home".

    My ratings cover both in-theater and in-home watching, and should give some idea of what I might like to see again sometime.

    So then, Who wants to see a movie? lol.
