Dallas Holmes spoke of how some songs that he writes that he just goes into it as one would go to work. Others, like Rise Again, are very special from the first moment. I think this song, Come Unto Jesus, is one of those special ones. (you tube) You know, anytime that you get a large enough group of believers together there will be all types represented...preachers, teachers, singers, and all the others that fulfill the needs of the group. And yet there are always more. Visitors, those on a fence of some kind, and those on the outside looking in. Maybe, here at the end of the year it is time for this one. To me, the simplicity of this song has some of the most drawing power that I have ever heard in a song. Listen with me while reading the lyrics....just one time.
Come unto Jesus, give Him your heart today;
Come unto Jesus, let Him have His way!
Oh, I know there are things in your life
You think He can't forgive;
But He'll forgive and forget, my friend,
And show you how to live.
Come unto Jesus, give Him your heart today;
Come unto Jesus, let Him have His way!
Don't you put it off my friend;
You can't afford to wait;
Today's the day for you,
Soon it could be too late!
Come unto Jesus, give Him your heart today;
Come unto Jesus, let Him have His way!
Come unto Jesus, give Him your heart today;
Come unto Jesus, let Him have His way!

I guess this is the first Christmas eve ever that i have been alone. and it seems that it is only on those last few hours of Christmas eve that I truly get what others call the Christmas spirit. In the past it was always getting the kids to bed so as to make things special for them. Before then there was the hustle and bustle and listening to so much Christmas music that anyone would get burned out on it. But there has always been this one that I never tire of. I was actually asked to lead singing in church once...imagine that. Nobody ever seems to comprehend that someone really can't sing. So, my begging out of that took a good long while but I got the deed done. Anyway, although the occasion was Not Christmas this would have been one chosen. So, if you are a songleader or know of one, I think it is a good idea to place one of these songs on your agenda at times other than Christmas. Read the words and realize that they shouldn't be pigeon holed to one season. Think a little outside the box. Many songs can preach sermons in a whole lot fewer words. Also, many songs have word changes and whole new verses if they've been around long enough. For this one I like Celine Dion's version to hear but not look at.
O holy night, the stars are brightly shining;...It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth! Long lay the world in sin and error pining,...Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, the weary soul rejoices,...For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born! O night, O holy night, O night divine!
Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,..With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand. So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,...Here came the wise men from Orient land. The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger,...In all our trials born to be our friend!
Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born! O night, O holy night, O night divine!
Truly He taught us to love one another;...His law is love and His Gospel is peace. Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother...And in His Name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,...Let all within us praise His holy Name!
Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born! O night, O holy night, O night divine!
There is an unsubstantiated story that this carol figured prominently on Christmas Eve, 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War. The story goes that, unexpectedly, a French soldier jumped out of his trench and sang Cantique de Noël. Moved by the song, the Germans did not fire upon the French soldier, and inspired by the sentiment, a German soldier emerged from his trench and sang a popular Christmas hymn from his country ("From Heaven Above To Earth I Come").
This carol also had the distinction of being the first one ever played live on a Christmas radio broadcast.

His Truth Is Marching On.....from Trilogy

'm not quite sure what year it was....mid nineties, i guess....a memory was made.
But the story starts long before that. In the early seventies, before cable and satellite, there were some alternate tv channels called educational. One evening a clip appeared of a young man in a black turtle neck, sitting on a bar stool and a holding a guitar.....simple as that. He proceeded to sing a compilation of 3 songs that we all are familiar with. There was no announcer and no credits. It would be years before I would learn that this man was Mickey Newberry. Mickey is one of those that are affectionately called a songwriters songwriter and yet he is an excellent singer as well. So, fast forward to the ninetiess and I find myself at the Cannery in Nashville with only a few dozen people. Micky comes to a small platform stage with one of the most talented violinist that I have heard. This was the night that Mickey was to do a video of the Trilogy and the electricity was in the air. Now, granted, the words to the 3 parts of this song have been around a long time, but there is some genius in putting it together the way it was.
Later, everyone tended to gather at the 3rd Coast which was already crowded. Someone decided to ask Mickey for his autograph and he borrowed a pen from me as I always carry them. Well, that precipitated a long line of autograph seekers and I never got that pen back. It was a good one, too. So, Mickey, I hope you wrote another great song with it. Videos of Trilogy by both Mickey and Elvis can be found. In his last years of performing Elvis would close each show with this song making it the last song he would do in public and "..Glory Glory Halalueau ..His Truth Is Marching On.." his last words to them. Elvis' life was too often portrayed as one of glitz and glamour, overshadowing his close lifelong connection with his belief in God. His giving was unending and I think his greatness had to do with his being willing to use his talents and would ultimately be saying (teaching) that last line.
Both Mickey and Elvis were believers and when you hear "His truth Is Marching On" you know it.
Oh I wish I was in the land of cotton Old things they are not forgotten Look away, look away, look away Dixieland Oh I wish I was in Dixie, away, away In Dixieland I take my stand to live and die in Dixie Cause Dixieland, that's where I was born Early Lord one frosty morning Look away, look away, look away Dixieland
Glory, glory hallelujah Glory, glory hallelujah Glory, glory hallelujah His truth is marching on
So hush little baby Don't you cry You know your daddy's bound to die But all my trials, Lord will soon be over
Glory, glory hallelujah Glory, glory hallelujah Glory, glory hallelujah His truth is marching on
A few of my posts have been in this vein and perhaps there will be others. And it is of how elements of faith have affected 'real' people on this earth and how they have made their decisions
