WHY MY HEART MELTS TONIGHT... Oct 18, 2008 10:01 pm

As I sit here my heart melts. What is it about the stars that captivates us so completely? Is it the great distance, their faithful and noble shimmering; or perhaps it's their great innumerability? I recall someone asking me years ago one, back-lit night...
"Doesn't it make you feel so insignificant?" I was rather dumbfounded, for it had always had just the opposite effect on my heart. It made me feel all the more significant.
We know that in Genesis 1:16 "And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: [he made] the stars also."

When I gaze upon the stars from my balcony, my heart just melts. I want to rise from my grounded earth, and embrace them. My heart is pulled to them, like the moon pulls the tide. But, why??
In Genesis 15:5 we learn:
"And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be."

I think their is a great allegory in my hearts affection for the stars. G-d just compared the stars to the seed of Abram (soon to become Abraham). You see, I think of the stars as a noble version of ourselves set in beautiful array in the heavens. I admire them because I too aspire to someday be a being of light shining forth from the heavens.
I admire them because amidst all the ugliness and darkness of this world, there are still those occasional sparks of faith and light, we see in our fellow brothers, sisters, and children. In a good deed, or in the blossom of a potential new love. Noble Lights, among a dark place; with the faintest twinkling of sweetened longing.
I believe I want to embrace the stars because they are a reflection of ourselves, and our Hope. And I feel so significant under their pin-pricks of lumen's because I know that within me is something that they lack... a heart. Or more precisely- a heart that melts. Therefore the stars I believe must shine for us... just as our hearts, shine for G-d.

II Peter 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts."
