The Midnight Ocean

Reflections, Poetry, and Prose from the depths of the Midnight Ocean.
Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD;
O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.
Psalm 130
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant. After those days, saith the LORD,
I will put my law in their inwards parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
Jeremiah 31:31-33

Wherefore the law is holy, and the Commandment Holy, and just, and good. Rom7:12

Let The Ember Still GLO... Apr 30, 2008 10:30 am

The Lamb is the light thereof. Our soul is the candle of G-d. The seven candlesticks are the seven churches.

Sometimes here on the midnight ocean the flame blazes, other times it flickers and wanes...but G-d forbid, it ever go out. We must struggle to hold fast to this gift of G-d within. As believers we are a reflection of the Lamb who is the light of the world, we are the stem of the candlestick, and our soul is indeed the candle of G-d.

Amidst the inhospitable sands of the Middle East -there has been a custom of maintaining an ember at all times- so that when the scorching sun of day gives way to the frigidness of night, the traveling pastoralist can survive...with comfort. It's existed at least since the time of Abraham. Thousands of years. At dawn an ember of charcoal is plucked from the nights fire and wrapped in the husk of a common desert cane-like plant. Then the husk is wrapped in cloth and stowed away for use at a later time.

It is now- and has been - a custom of these desert pastoralist's to offer food and tea to anyone that comes near. Just as Abraham threw open the tents entrance at the sight of the Angels of G-d on their way to Sodom.
It is custom to likewise be hospitable even to enemies.
What we can learn here on BC, from this is that when our flame is in danger of flickering-out; and we are tempted to leave because of a perceived enemy or insult, we must not let it affect our flame for G-d. If we leave BC let it be because G-d would have us leave, and not because someone has doused our fire.
And wherever we travel, and whatever enemies we cross paths with in the future, let us carry with us the ember always. And serve even our enemies...wherever G-d may lead us.
Let our embers still Glo,
Isa 42:6 I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;
Isa 42 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, [and] them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

Stow the ember,

Thoughts On My Failure Today... Apr 28, 2008 7:47 pm
1146 Views

Recently on my blog, we've been discussing G-d in the stars, G-d in natures creatures; the G-d within, and the G-d without, etc, etc. Today however, I was painfully reacquainted with that seemingly far less romantic, and gallant dwelling that G-d also presides over- our failure.
7:45AM brought that most dreaded of student past-times Final Exams! Where in one brief hour or two, the fruits of weeks of anxiety, sleepless nights, and diligence (or lack thereof) are put upon the scales and weighed. By 7:55AM this morning I knew that something was amiss, and I was found wanting.
Failure for me, is not something that I enjoy talking about.
But, failure for us is as much a part of our lives as victory is. It's as tangible a thing as joy, and as real as the earth beneath us.
We learn from Psalms 125:2 "As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about His people from henceforth even for ever."
Just as the mountains around Jerusalem are of the same dust that Jerusalem sits on; We likewise, who are His People, are an integral part of-Him. For man was made in the image of G-d and also of the dust.
And no more did the mountains flee and forsake Jerusalem in the days of her trouble, than will the Lord abandon us when we fail. And sometimes it's in our lowliness that we are truly able to see the mountains around us.

"BLOGGERS LOWER YOUR GATES!" Apr 24, 2008 4:48 am

Bloggers...Let's lower our gates.
I want to talk with you about gates. Yes, just plain old gates, but as usual their is a bit of a twist. When we hear of the Temple today we often hear of its walls. Very often the "wailing or Western Wall," where observers have gone for generation after generation to bemoan the destruction of the temple. Tucking their written prayers into the clefts of the bricks.
During the ages of the kingdoms, walls were the first line of defense against attackers and marauders. It presented a means of retaining the treasure, the life, and the kings sovereignty. When the walls fell the kingdom and the king fell with it.
We ourselves erect walls of our own to protect what we hold dear, be it our hearts, our loved ones, and for a great many of us here on BC...our G-d. We erect these walls and defend them viscously, fervently, and sometimes bitterly. We are afraid a breech of the enemy, will bring us destruction and exile.
You see sometimes we all fail to realize that an attack doesn't need to breach the walls to mount an effective attack. The enemy can just surround the walls and cut off the trade, the bread, and the water. Through isolation, the kingdom will fall just as if it were attacked. The main difference is that the attackers will not even suffer a single loss. Just like when we are tricked into isolation by the sight of an attack, do we suffer likewise.
Ok so you may be thinking, "I thought you wanted to talk about gates?" Yes! We must learn to use our gates more effectively. We cannot close off-within our walls the good within us from getting out. And we shouldn't call every man that is from a different camp an attacker.By this we make enemies and not friends. The more enemies we make the more isolated we will become during the impending attacks. Eventually, we'll wear down and starve.
Let's lower our gates during the day and let the goodness of G-d's kingdom within us move freely. When it's dark its ok to pull up the gates and keep a watchman. But, lets not attack till a time when we can see clearly that those outside are indeed enemies. It's such an awful thing to be hasty and slay one of our own. Let us be a more gracious host. As G-d is the Host of Hosts.
Besides the Holy of Holies inside our temples- as believers in the One G-d, is His, and what the Lord gives- He can take away.

Intolerance- "Birds of a Feather!!" Apr 23, 2008 7:02 am
580 Views
One of the things that the arrival of Spring brings is an influx of nesting birds that reclaim their territory after a winter spent abroad. Around my little nook of the planet the birds always follow the receding of the snow.
They start up about 4am here, each morning, doing what song birds do best- sing. They seem to sing out of the fullness of their hearts, in overflowing excitement and anticipation of the coming day. They praise the coming of the light and rising of the sun, long before it's first ray slices the darkness. Together they make a most enjoyable chorus. The keen ear can distinguish the robin's voice from the mourning dove's. The blue jay's call from the purple finch. They are different, lovely, and admirable. I do have my favorite, but it's a personal decision.
G-d has given them a great gift in their hearts, and they open-up and the gift is spoken into the air for all in ear-shot to enjoy. I admire them- and this morning I find myself wishing we could be a bit more like them.I believe we are born as they are, with a gift in our hearts that G-d would have us sing in our own voice. But, we fall short of the song bird in one important way:
I have never heard a morning dove say to the robin- "you would do well to sing as I do!" And I do not know of a purple finch who has said, "my song is the gift of G-d not yours."

For Matthew 10:31 tells us "Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows."
We are more valuable, but we can be so much more intolerant as well.
GB and enjoy the day,

Cheers to Dreariness, Coldness, and Drudgery Apr 20, 2008 7:52 pm
Mood: 25, 631 Views
You know sometimes I tend to overlook certain people-and certain things in my life; and not give them the thanks they deserve.
Did you ever witness say- a child do something that is seemingly quite ordinary- and suddenly just be overcome with emotion? Sometimes I'll witness something that is so beautiful that my heart seemingly swells beyond what is healthy. That sudden flood of emotion is almost unbearable at times I think.
Rarely, at times like this do I forget to praise G-d for these sparks of brilliance and love. It is rather the rough and cruel drudgery I witness that I often mistakenly fail to be thankful for. You see, I think that if it wasn't for all the dreariness and coldness I see so regularly perhaps my heart just couldn't survive. Perhaps then my heart would fall for the world, and be drawn away from heaven. And G-d forbid, perhaps I would no longer have space enough for G-d in my heart.
So tonight I say cheers to the drudgery and dreariness that tries to bring me down daily. Because you've succeeded in doing just the opposite. You unwittingly bring me closer and closer to G-d daily.

Can You Guess What Will Happen? Apr 19, 2008 10:29 pm
628 Views
I wrote this last month and thought maybe someone might enjoy it. Can you guess what will happen?

JAH'S EARTHLY PLAIN

The sun descended
and my head did hang
For I was greatly wounded but not slain.
A soliloquy; of hymns once sang.

The dew did set as my blood did let
-For the earth hath no remorse nor shame-
but takes all; be they king or cur
extinguishes she their flame.

My scabbard lie beneath my awkward repose
tangled-enshrouded in blood soaked clothes
From pain there was no rest
beneath my chinked and marred vest
Its deed-outlasts the longest battles close.

Pathos! Sweet Pain!
Where is thy gain?
An fateful night-
after an most horrendous fight?
Sweet orris where is thy scent -
when mortal flesh is rent,
and lain- near slain
upon the parched and spiny ground?

My shield lie beside me
mine head found a craggy rest.
My mouth did not whisper nor wail-
twas then and there
amidst my sullen stare-
The stage did set-for moon to crest.

Stage left- and the curtain was drawn
an array of lights, the galaxy did spawn
As if flakes of snow-
had been made to glow!
My soul yet clung hard-
As I lowered my guard
and embraced the sublime-celestial show.

White glittering lumen's-
illuminating mine ruins.
The pain did ease-
as if taken upon gentle breeze.
In its peace I focused my gaze,
Came there a strange bluish blaze!
"Behold," a beam- parts the heavenly seas!

For what came next seems a ghastly tale
"Lo!" A star lept forth-
As an arrow shot on the earth!
Tis a terrific sight
when a ball of light-
falls upon thee as hail!
Twas a wretched being the sky did birth.
An horseman, whose steed was deathly pale
-as if suffered an thousand years of dearth-
near made my heart to fail!
For my death was its abominable mirth.

The beast swooped in a flash
-It's riders gaze fast upon me-
stillness shattered with gallops thrash!
-it's lips did part, to issue this decree:
"Michael, from me-
surely can no mortal flee,
and lo, I come for thee
."

Twas the twinkling of an eye,
he'd drawn his fiery sword-
and thrust it through my side,
flesh not torn- but silver cord,
For verily, I died!

My soul came out through mine mouth-
with my dying breath.
Surely I can attest-
words alone cannot express
the vision of ones own body lain-slain-
...upon J*h's earthly plain.

End act 1
Act 2 will come as soon as I write it. Hope you enjoyed it.

Think Before We Type!!! Apr 18, 2008 7:28 pm

On Zion in David's tomb in the heart of Israel, is an eight foot blue velvet drape with one star for each year of Israel's independence. And it reads, "If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand wither." ~PS 137

All politics aside perhaps we- here on BC- can learn something from this. As we know Jerusalem literally means "City of Peace." And perhaps before we type something that may offend without any real regard for the other person, we should ask ourselves "does this come from that place of Peace G-d gave me...within my own heart?" If we had enough faith to believe Psalm 137, perhaps we too would rather have our right hand wither, rather than type something of purely-cruel intent.

2 letters to my unborn niece or nephew:

Dear baby "X", to be named later,
I know you're probably pretty confused right now, but there's a world to come after this one you're in. I know that it seems pretty dark, but you are growing eyes and in the world to come there is this thing called light- and I can't really explain it but- you will see. You're mother and father are the best of people and I love them with my whole heart. They will love you and protect you. They will teach you right and wrong. They may scold you sometimes but that's only because they love you. We'll be a close family and have a lot of fun together. It's going to be a long trip but you'll get here soon enough. I can't wait to see you. Love ya and
Godspeed.

Dear 13 year old "X":
I know you're probably pretty confused right now, but there's a world to come after this one you're in. I know that it seems pretty dark, but you are growing spiritually and in the world to come there is a Heavenly Father and He is Light- and I can't totally explain it but- you will see Him someday. Your Heavenly Father is the best and I love Him with my whole heart. He will love you and protect you. He will teach you right and wrong. He may scold you sometimes but that's only because He Love's you. We're a close family and have a lot of fun together. It's going to be a long trip but you'll get up there with Him. He can't wait to see you. Love ya and

Tortured Apr 17, 2008 9:11 pm

Perhaps tonight, I can share with you one of my favorite quotations from a man whose writing is of great inspiration to me. That is Pastor Richard Wurmbrand Author of 'Tortured for Christ.' As if surviving WWII as a Jew in Europe wasn't tough enough, then came that wickedness-communism. He'd become a Christian and was soon arrested by the Communist government that reigned in Romania following the war; after being caught teaching the gospel. For fourteen years he was subjected to such wicked Torture in a dungeon that I dare not even speak of to you. Through disfigurement and atrocity he prayed for- and loved his Torturers...
He writes:
"When I look back on my fourteen years in prison, it was occasionally a very happy time. Other prisoners and even the guards very often wondered at how happy Christians could be under the most terrible circumstances.
We could not be prevented from singing, although we were beaten for this. I imagine Nightingales, too, would sing, even if they knew that after finishing they would be killed for it.
Christians in prison danced for joy. How could they (if there was no G-d) be so happy under such tragic conditions
."
So tonight let us breathe in that sense of freedom that we have, and remember the great sacrifices that have been paid so we can sing as freely as a nightingale. From Sea to Shining Sea...
For such writings as this- I would've been Tortured.

What's the Hubbub about Free-Will??? Apr 17, 2008 5:19 pm
576 Views
Each man and woman is a whole world unto themselves. We must govern thoughts, balance emotions, quell or fan desires, etc, etc. All work in concert to build within ourselves the infrastructure of a life all their own. We were bestowed free will by the Creator, and will someday be judged by the world we create within ourselves, with this most profound gift.
Just as when a married man looks lustfully upon another women, is he already an adulterer. For the world within himself has gone awry. But, bless G-d we have free will and can stymie the attack before it leaves our world within and pollutes the world without. We are all born as the masters of our world within.
And you've been entrusted with this gift of free will- and no other creature has.
It's only when the Creator dwells within us can we work towards peace. For only when Christ is the bedrock of our internal infrastructure within will we be successful in withstanding the daily barrage of missile attacks coming from without.
And only by our freely relinquishing our will and placing in its stead the will of G-d, can we take the peace of our internal world and begin to transform the external world. And only by each and every soul doing this, will perfect peace descend on earth.
For Christ is the Prince of Peace, both of our individual interior worlds and our collective exterior world. Therefore let us use this wholly precious gift of free will- and freely offer up our own will as a sacrifice to the one who bestowed it. Then let us ask for the only thing more precious than free will...THE WILL OF G-D.
But, what do you think???
Peace and wisdom friends,
sabrefire
