What's Your Position In The Kingdom? Mar 26, 2008 4:56 am
Mood: Victorious!, 494 Views
Winning The Game Of Life

In sports, in order to be an effective player that makes lots of plays, it’s important to know your position and how to position yourself to make the plays.

In Christ we have all been given different positions, ministries, gifts and talents that make up our calling in God. We all have a destiny to fulfill, a perfect plan and purpose.

Romans 12:3-4 (NKJV) For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function.

Do we know our position? Are we making lots of plays in our relationship with God or are we sitting on the bench watching others make all the plays? God wants all of us to get into the game and make as many plays as we possibly can.
The dynamic of God is that He is always at work and involved in making plays that bring forth the kingdom in a greater dimension, not only in our lives, but in the people that He puts in our paths.

John 12:26 "If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.

What He is saying here is that He expects us to be in position, so that we can handle the ball when it is given to us.

Discovering & Finding Our Position in the Kingdom.

1.Know Who You Are in Christ.

It’s important to know who we are in Christ. We have been given the mind of Christ and have been made partakers of His divine nature.

Just as an athlete has to know what he is capable of before making great plays, we must know what we are capable of in Christ.

We are told in Scripture that we are:

More than conquerors in Him – Romans 8:37
He always leads us in triumph – 2 Corinthians 2:14
We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us – Phil. 4:13

This is our position in Christ from which we operate. What can you do for God based on that? The playing field is wide open, the possibilities are endless!

2.We Must Know God’s Purpose & Will in the world and in our lives.

2 Timothy 1:9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.

In other words, we must know the game plan. Whatever our position is, it will center around God’s purpose and His game plan. Therefore it is important to know His game plan. So let’s take a moment to look at His overall game plan.

•Jesus said, He was going to "build a church of which the gates or the authority of Hell could not prevail against – His authority and rule will be established in the Church"
Matthew 16:18.

The earth shall be filled with His glory through His body – What is the exceeding greatness of His power towards us who believe
Ephesians 1:17-23.

3.Let God’s Purpose and Perspective Fill your Heart.

Ephesians 1:17-18 "that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling...

God’s desire for each one of us is that they eyes of our understanding would be opened so that we can see the hope of our calling. Everything about our hope and calling is related in some way to His purpose and will in the earth today.

In the same way a football player needs to spend time getting to know the game plan, so that he can execute the plays correctly, we must spend time getting to know God and his game plan so that we are perfectly positioned for the plays as they present themselves to us.

Daniel 11:32 "the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits.

4.Have a Heart of Faith and Expectancy.

Jesus constantly encouraged His disciples to have faith and to believe all things were possible to those who believe in the midst of difficulties.
Mark 9:23 Jesus said, "If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes."

We should expect God to move supernaturally in our lives. It takes faith, expectancy and commitment to be continually used by God supernaturally.

When football players are lined up on the scrimmage line they are not standing there with their arms folded waiting for something to happen. They are hunched down in an aggressive position acutely aware of every move going on around them waiting in expectancy to execute the play.

Are you positioned to respond to the Divine appointments God wants to bring your way? Or are you standing around with your head in the clouds and arms folded waiting and wondering if God will ever use you?

5.Don’t Allow the Wounds & Disappointments of Life to Take You Out of the Game.

Most athletes will get hurt and injured at one time or another if they are in the game continuously play after play. A good athlete will go through rehabilitation and physical therapy and get back in the game ASAP.

•It’s hard to go through life and ministry without getting banged up from time to time.

•The trials of life have a way of stealing our passion and joy from us. When we lose our passion, we also lose our sense of purpose and destiny.

Paul said, “That I might finish the race”. He got banged up a lot – probably more than any of us will ever begin to experience, yet he continued in the race without losing his perspective and passion.

You can't allow wounds and disappointments to take you out of the game. God wants to do great things in our lives, so let’s put on the armor of light and be about our Father’s business. He wants to use us and bless us more than we can comprehend or imagine. There's a perfect plan and purpose, with your name on it, but in order to walk in it, you have to have a clear understanding of who you are, what your position is, and what the game plan is.

These are the strategies necessary to be victorious in the game of life.

These Are The Things God Will Do...... Mar 25, 2008 1:01 pm

My scripture reading today in Isaiah, so inspired me and filled me with confidence, that no matter what happens in my life, He is with me and will deliver me, in due time. Hallelujah!

And I will bring the blind by a way they know not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known. I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These things I have determined to do for them. I will not forsake them.

Isaiah 42:16

...I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned or scorched, nor will the flame kindle upon you.

Isaiah 43:1-2

Praise the Lord, magnify His name! I will honor Him and hold Him in highest esteem all the days of my life and beyond!

Why Pray? Mar 25, 2008 5:25 am
Mood: Prayerful, 531 Views

Why should we pray?

There are many reasons to pray, prayer is a multi-faceted priviledge. It is our communication with God. The deeper your prayer life, the more intimate your relationship to God will be. For most people, the common prayer is of petition, for the things we want or need. Another reason for prayer is to express our gratitude, appreciation, and thanksgiving to God for His goodness. There's a great deal of power in prayer.

The power of prayer should not be underestimated. James 5:16-18 declares, "…The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops."
God most definitely listens to prayers, answers prayers, and moves in response to prayers.

Jesus taught, "…I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you"
Matthew 17:20
2 Corinthians 10:4-5 tells us, "The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."
The Bible urges us, "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints"
Ephesians 6:18

The Power Of Prayer - How do I tap into it?
The power of prayer is not the result of the person praying. Rather, the power resides in the God who is being prayed to. 1 John 5:14-15 tells us, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of Him."
No matter the person praying, the passion behind the prayer, or the purpose of the prayer - God answers prayers that are in agreement with His will. His answers are not always yes, but are always in our best interest. When our desires line up with His will, we will come to understand that in time. When we pray passionately and purposefully, according to God's will, God responds powerfully!

We cannot access powerful prayer by using "magic formulas." Our prayers being answered is not based on the eloquence of our prayers. We don't have to use certain words or phrases to get God to answer our prayers. In fact, Jesus rebukes those who pray using repetitions, "And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him"
Matthew 6:v7-8
Prayer is communicating with God. All you have to do is ask God for His help. Psalm 107:28-30 reminds us, "Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven." There is power in prayer!

The Power Of Prayer - For what kind of things should I pray?
God's help through the power of prayer is available for all kinds of requests and issues. Philippians 4:v6-7 tells us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." If you need an example of a prayer, read Matthew 6:9-13. These verses are known as the Lord's prayer. The Lord's prayer is not a prayer we are supposed to memorize and simply recite to God. It is only an example of how to pray and the things that should go into a prayer - worship, trust in God, requests, confession, protection, etc. Pray for these kinds of things, but speak to God using your own words.

The Word of God is full of accounts describing the power of prayer in various situations. The power of prayer has overcome enemies-Psalm 6:9-10, conquered death-2 Kings 4:3-36, brought healing-James 5:14-15, and defeated demons-Mark 9:29. God, through prayer, opens eyes, changes hearts, heals wounds, and grants wisdom-James 1:5. The power of prayer should never be underestimated because it draws on the glory and might of the infinitely powerful God of the universe!

The Inscription On The Cross-What Did It Say? Mar 23, 2008 4:06 am
Mood: Wondering..........., 636 Views

Click on the image to see it larger

I have always wondered what the words were that you see in pictures and paintings, posted on the cross. Upon researching, I discovered this.

Does the fact that all four Gospels contain different versions of the inscription on the Cross indicate error? By no means. Both Luke and John tell us that the inscription on the Cross of Jesus was written in three languages, Greek, Latin and Hebrew. It is therefore a reasonable assumption that three of the Gospel writers each chose to quote a different language, and that one writer chose to quote the words common to the other three.

THE INSCRIPTIONS
Let us begin with the way each writer prefaces the inscription(s).

Matthew 27:37 says, 'And [they] set up over his head his accusation written'.

Mark 15:26 says, 'And the superscription of his accusation was written over'.

Luke 23:38 says, 'And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew'.

John 19:19 says, 'And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross'.

Notice that all these prefaces differ. Mark tells us that a superscription was written; Matthew, that it was set up over his head; Luke, that it was written in three languages; and John, that Pilate was the writer. All these statements are correct, even though each writer says something different!

The four accounts of the inscription are arranged below so the similarities and differences are easily discerned:

Matthew 27:37-THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS
Mark 15:26-THE KING OF THE JEWS
Luke 23:38-THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS
John 19:19-JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS

What was the significance of using three languages?
It was the custom of the Romans to use gypsum letters written on a rough board affixed to a cross to proclaim the reason why a person was being executed, although three languages were not always used.

Latin was the official language of the Roman Empire; it represented human government, power, and conquest. Greek was the international language of culture; it represented human wisdom, art, and commerce. Hebrew was the religious language of the Jews; it represented the Covenant Race, the Law of God, and the means by which God made Himself known to man. In the providence of God, all of these human and divine institutions were addressed when Jesus was crucified. How did this come about?

The most probable scenario is that the Roman governor, Pilate, dictated the title in Latin and the centurion in charge of the execution implemented the edict and its translation into the other languages. The words 'King of the Jews' were a public sneer at the Jews by Pilate, and this was compounded by his additional taunt that their 'king' came from Nazareth, i.e. that he was a despised Galilean.

JOHN
As John is the only Gospel writer who mentions Pilate, or Nazareth, or who calls the inscription a 'title' (Latin titulus), it is abundantly evident that John is quoting the Latin which read:

IESUS NAZARENVS REX IVDAEORVM

Latin used 'I' and 'V' where English uses 'J' and 'U'. That this is the Latin is further confirmed by the fact that the Early Church adopted as a symbol the Latin letters 'INRI', which are the first letters of this inscription (only), and this symbol appears in many early paintings of the crucifixion.

LUKE
Luke was a highly educated man (a physician- Colossians 4:14) and he addressed his Gospel to a Greek nobleman (the 'most excellent Theophilus' of Luke 1:3). It is therefore very reasonable to suppose that Luke gives us the Greek inscription:

OUTOS ESTIN O BASILEUS TWN IOUDAIWN

MATTHEW
Matthew wrote for the Jews and used many quotations from the Old Testament to show that Jesus was the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah. It is therefore most likely that Matthew quotes the Hebrew inscription.

MARK
This leaves Mark, whose Gospel is shorter than the other three, and who gives us a somewhat abbreviated account of the life of Jesus, as his purpose is to tell us more about what Jesus did than what Jesus said. For example, he omits the birth of Jesus, as well as the whole of the sermon on the mount and several other discourses. True to his style, Mark abbreviates the inscription to the words common to the three languages used, namely 'THE KING OF THE JEWS'.

THE BOARD
Now comes the most interesting part! The Latin title, being the official indictment, would undoubtedly have been written first on the board. This then would have determined the length of the board and/or the size of the letters required to fit the inscription into one line and for it still to be readable by the crowd from a distance John 19:20

In those days they did not use spaces between the words in any of the languages as we do now, and so John's Latin 'title' contained just 26 letters and no spaces.

Luke's Greek 'superscription' contained 30 letters, and so must have been written in slightly smaller letters than was the Latin. It is easy to see that there would not have been room for 16 more letters for the words 'Jesus of Nazareth' (i.e.'Jesus the Nazarene) in Greek.

Matthew's 'accusation' in Hebrew contained just 19 letters, which is rather fewer than the two other languages, because the Jews did not write vowels in Hebrew. Whoever translated the title into Hebrew apparently did not think it worth adding 'of Nazareth'. Perhaps he thought that to have lived in Nazareth was not an indictable offense!

If we put all of this together, it is highly probable that the board with the inscriptions looked as shown in the pic, (click to see larger image) with the Latin written first, probably at the top, and then either the Greek or the Hebrew.

Community Service, lol Mar 22, 2008 10:37 am
Mood: Laughing, 601 Views

Just a cute email I got today, lol

Community Service

One day a florist goes to a barber for a haircut. After the cut he asked about his bill and the barber replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was pleased and left the shop. When the barber goes to open his shop the next morning there is a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The cop is happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber goes to open up there is a 'thank you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Later that day, a college professor comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The professor is very happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber opens his shop, there is a 'thank you' card and a dozen different books, such as 'How to Improve Your Business' and 'Becoming More Successful.

'Then, a Congressman comes in for a haircut, and when he goes to pay his bill the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The Congressman is very happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber goes to open up, there are a dozen Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the members of our Congress.

Vote carefully this year!

1st Annual BigChurch Party Info-Please Read! Mar 22, 2008 6:18 am
Mood: Excited!!!, 1082 Views

My fav scripture is Ephesians 3:20:

To God, Who is able to do exceedingly and abundantly, above and beyond, ALL that I could ever dare to hope, ask, or think, according to His power that works within me.

He always performs this scripture in my life, and this BC party is no exception, lol. What started out as a few of us getting together has turned out to be a huge celebration! And, I'm so blessed, as I can't wait to meet all of you! This blog is dedicated to answering all your questions, lol,

Airport-The name of the closest airport is SW Florida International Airport, the code is RSW, and is located in Ft Myers. For those flying in, it would be great if you could arrive by the 2nd or 3rd, so as not to have to make airport runs all day on the 4th. Bill (dundeal) and Jean (reallysaved2) Have graciously offered to pick everyone up, so please email your itinerary to me or them, as soon as you make reservations, so we know who to pick up, at what times.
Hotels-I went on the website, hotels with a dot and a com, and found 3 that are inexpensive, decent, and not too far away. One is LaQuinta Inn Ft Myers, 2 double beds, internet, pool, coffeemaker, Continental breakfast, etc, $59 night. Then, there's Howard Johnson's, 2 doubles or 1 king-$55 night, Then, there's Clarion Hotel Ft Myers, 2 doubles, $70 night with fitness center, free breakfast served in the restaurant. All are located in Ft Myers, on S. Cleveland Ave, make sure you check on these locations, as there are several.
I spoke with the management at La Quinta, and was given a toll free number to get a discount if we reserve a block of rooms. So, let me know as soon as possible, so I can try to work that out. In addition, it's right next to one of my fav restaurants, Mel's Diner, and convenient for getting you to and from. Jean has offered to provide additional info, such as phone numbers etc, just email her or leave a comment and she'll get in touch. I contacted bc in hopes of them allowing me to post this info, to no avail. She also suggested going to the priceline website, for further discounts.
Directions-Just find Interstate 75, it runs all the way through Florida, and head south to exit 136, at Ft Myers. Directions from there to my house, or from the airport to my house, if you're renting a car, can be gotten from Jean also, as I didn't want to put this info on a public post. In addition, she'll have my ph #'s to give you.
Sleeping Arrangements-I have 4 bedrooms and will have 10 beds available for the ladies, one of which is spoken for, (it's got your name on it, joybells55, lol) they'll be first come, first served, unless you have a special need for a bed, let me know. Guys, I figure I have room for about 10 sleeping bags, so the most I can accommodate is 20-25 here. I'll put up some tents in the backyard, I have several, one is 3 rooms and we call it the tent hotel, lol, so anyone able to get a hotel, please do so that we can provide a place to sleep to those who aren't able to.
I have 3 bathrooms, so we'll just have to coordinate showers and other bodily functions accordingly, lol. OK Byron?
Meals, Food, and Menu-I thought, if all were in agreement, we could have one meal each day out somewhere. We have a Golden Corral, which is a dynamite buffet, something for everyone, and there's about 20 restaurants within a mile of my house, fast food and otherwise. For the 4th, we'll have a BBQ with hamburgers, hot dogs, and smoked sausage. Angel has offered to make baked beans and potato salad, and we'll have a good variety of other foods available too, cole slaw, devilled eggs, cocktail shrimp, cheese and crackers, fruit and veggie trays, and munchies. Of course, sweet and unsweet tea, sodas and bottled water. I thought we could cook out on Saturday and Sunday also, BBQ chicken, shish-ka-bobs, steaks or ribs, whatever you want. Everyone can chip in on the food and drink costs as we go along. Breakfasts here will be continental, breads, pastries, and muffins, and fruit. Feedback is appreciated, tell me what you want, and volunteers appreciated also, lol.
Coordinating travel with other members-Many are traveling from all over this country, so please leave a comment where you're travelling from and if you're willing to share a ride, or are looking to hitch a ride with someone. Many have offered this info on the first blog, but it is nearly 8 pages with comments, and could take you a day just to read through them all, so please leave a comment here, so others can hook up with you, let's get some bigchurch caravans going!
What to bring-Pack as you would for any vacation, and bring your fav CD's, DVD's, karaoke songs, etc. Also, please bring a towel, as I have a couple dozen, but will be using most of them for the pool. If you're sleeping or camping out here, be sure to bring bedding, pillows, sleeping bags, or air mattresses, if you're able. Please bring your Bible, also. Make sure to bring your cameras, as I have a feeling, (especially with Ken wanting to dance, lol,) there'll be many Kodak moments.
Fireworks-I'll buy some fireworks for the 4th, there is a stand 1 block away, please feel free to contribute to this effort as you are able. The stand always lets off what they don't sell, so we'll have that added benefit, and it should be an excellent display.
Church on Sunday-My church is closeby, it's a charismatic church called King's Way. It offers contemporary music and each is encouraged to worship in their own way, singing, dancing, clapping, and the lifting of hands is also encouraged, I think you'll enjoy it.
Miscellaneous-It's very hot here, in July, and I for one, hate the heat, so there will be many indoor activities too. I have some fun games planned, Biblical and otherwise, with prizes for the winners, lol. Glo suggested a time of sharing, and I have an awesome stero system and 57" HD TV, for videos, movies, and other Christian shows. Sorry, Ken won't be dressing up in his little grass skirt and coconut shells, doing the hula, as we had hoped., lol.
Finally-I'm asking everyone to be patient and kind, as with any large gathering, there's bound to be inconveniences and even misunderstandings, lol, so a little love and forbearance will go a long way. I'm also asking for everyone to pray for this event, that Jesus may be glorified, His presence made mighty, and the fellowship exceed our expectations. Michael has presented his prayer for the party, posted below, and I ask you all to be in agreement with it:

"Dear Lord I pray for everyone that would like to come and that will be coming to Terries for a BC Celebration Party... thank you Lord for opening the many doors and hearts of everyone involved... where their is need for help in expenses, bless them Lord, help for visa's, passport's, time off, child care, automobile's, flight's, and carpooling... bless it all Lord Jesus... May we all come together in faith and love and celebrate You Jesus in all we do... amen...

Campers... beware of the ants... lol, michael"

Don't worry about the fire ants, I have my yard treated, lol.

So, there you have it, I've tried to cover the most frequently asked questions, lol, but if I've forgotten something, or if you have a question or concern, please leave me a comment so I can address it. If you'd like to volunteer to help, I'd greatly appreciate all I can get.

Let's have an Ephesians 3:20 party bigchurch, I can't wait to meet all of you, EVERYONE is welcome!

Some Words To Inspire You, On Resurrection Day Mar 21, 2008 6:14 am
Mood: Blessed!, 620 Views

Just some things I read in my devotional, that blessed me. I pray they bless you also.

Because He Lives, We Too Shall Live
In this restless world of struggle, it's very hard to find,
Answers to the questions that daily come to mind.
We cannot see the future, what's beyond is still unknown,
For the secret of God's Kingdom, still belong to Him alone.
But He granted us salvation, when His Son was crucified,
For life became immortal, because our Savior died.
And to know life is unending and God's love is endless too,
Makes each daily task we face, much easier to do.
For our Saviour's resurrection, was God's way of telling men,
That in Christ we are eternal, and in Him we live again.

Helen Steiner Rice

The Hope of the Resurrection
Christ's resurrection changed Mary from a mourner into a messenger;
It changed Thomas from a doubter into a believer;
It changed Peter from a denier to a preacher;
And it changed Paul from a persecutor into a missionary.
For early Christians, the Resurrection event became a Resurrection experience, a cleansing, life-changing, transforming experience!
Today, nearly 2000 years later, that Resurrection event is still the greatest hope in a world of fear and confusion.

Dr Paul S. James

He Lives!!!
I know that my Redeemer lives!
What joy the best assurance gives!
He lives, He lives, who once was dead,
He lives, my everlasting Head!
He lives to bless me with His love
He lives to plead for me above.
He lives, my hungry soul to feed
He lives to help me in my need.
He lives and grants me daily breath
He lives and I shall conquer death.
He lives, my mansion to prepare
He lives to bring me safely there.
He lives, all glory to His Name
He lives, my Saviour still the same.
What joy the best assurance gives
I know that my Redeemer lives.

Because I Live
If the Christ Who died had stopped at the cross,
His work would have had been incomplete.
If the Christ Who was buried had stayed in the tomb
He would have only known defeat.
But the way of the cross never stops at the cross
And the way of the tomb leads on
To victorious grace in the heavenly place
Where our risen Lord has gone.

He Arose
Very early in the morning, before the break of day,
The morning star shone on the tomb, where our dear Saviour lay.
The earth was clothed with darkness, the shadows had not fled
The city slumbered on that morn, they thought that He was dead.
It still was dark when He arose, and stepped forth from the grave
The victory over sin and death, with power, your soul to save.
So shall it be when He returns, and calls His own to rise
While this old world is sleeping still, we'll meet Him in the skies.

Anne Moore

A Blessed Resurrection Day to all of you!

The Death of Jesus-6 Hours of Eternity On the Cross Mar 21, 2008 3:41 am

A superficial reading of the gospel narratives concerning the death of Jesus, will show that He was nailed to the cross at 9 o'clock in the morning, and was dead by 3 in the afternoon. His terrible ordeal, it would seem, was over in a mere six hours.

The agony in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before had been an ordeal in prayer before His Father that we can scarcely understand. The writer of Hebrews comments on this incident:

"In the days of His flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to Him who was able to save Him from death, and He was heard for His godly fear. Although He was a Son, He learned obedience through what He suffered..."
Hebrews 5:v7, 8

Then, too, Jesus had been up the rest of the night without sleep enduring scourging, beating, cruel mockery and unspeakable brutality. He was already weakened when He carried His cross, stumbling, to the place of crucifixion alongside the main public highway, probably just outside the Damascus Gate.

Several medical doctors and forensic experts have written books about the common Roman form of execution---death by crucifixion. Often the process took several days. The nailing of hands and feet forced the victim to push up against the weight of his own body to take a single breath. In the hot sun, terrible thirst ensued and death came in most cases from suffocation amidst great pain. The victim was also naked and humiliated---death on the cross was reserved for the most wretched of all criminals.

Wood was in short supply in Israel in Roman times. It is likely that small trees (such as olive trees) were pressed into service to handle the thousands of executions. Crosses were stuck into the ground along major thoroughfares to offer maximum public viewing which included public ridicule and scorn. The terrible nature of this punishment helped enforce Rome's control over the Jews whom they hated anyway. In the Law of Moses, hanging a criminal on a tree or cross was reserved for the most serious crimes, "And if a man has committed a sin worthy of death, and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, his corpse shall not hang all night on the tree, but you shall surely bury him on the same day (for he who is hanged is accursed of God), so that you do not defile your land which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance."
Deuteronomy 21:22-23

There is much more to the death of Jesus on the cross than the visible suffering, terrible pain and suffering, and the incredible ignominy of such a horrible death for One who was not only innocent but also the very Son of God.

The Death of Jesus-From a Medical Perspective Mar 21, 2008 3:27 am

This is a medical description of the death of Jesus, written by medical doctors in the Journal of American Medicine, in 1986. Read about how His death was described:

Jesus of Nazareth underwent Jewish and Roman trials was flogged and was sentenced to death by crucifixion. The scourging produced deep stripelike lacerations and appreciable blood loss and it probably set the stage for hypovolemic shock as evidenced by the fact that Jesus was too weakened to carry the crossbar (patibulum) to Golgotha. At the site of crucifixion his wrists were nailed to the patibulum and after the patibulum was lifted onto the upright post (stipes) his feet were nailed to the stipes. The major pathophysiologic effect of crucifixion was an interference with normal respirations. Accordingly death resulted primarily from hypovolemic shock and exhaustion asphyxia. Jesus death was ensured by the thrust of a soldier s spear into his side. Modern medical interpretation of the historical evidence indicates that Jesus was dead when taken down from the cross.
