Painfully Remembering Nov 11, 2008 3:17 am
Mood: Remembering, 556 Views
With today being Veterans Day, I'm caused to pray and consider every veteran, every military personnel, who so unselfishly gave and is giving of themselves, to protect the freedoms we hold dear. I thank God for each one and pray blessings upon them, and a real and tangible revelation of His love and our deepest respect. I pray for healing and restoration for those wounded in the process. I pray safety and protection for those still in harm's way, and strength and courage to see it through. I pray mercy and peace in the hearts of every family member anxious and fearful for the lives of their precious soldiers. I remember and pray for our veterans today.

But, on a deeper and more intimate level, today I remember my sister Sherrie, who died in 1999 of AIDS. Today would have been her 51st birthday. She was a veteran in her own life, fighting a war that was never won. Her daughter was kidnapped from her when she was only 3 years old. Sherrie spent her entire life trying to recover from losing her only child, only to fail miserably. Alcohol and drugs were her only escape from the pain. When she finally went to be with Jesus, on November 27, 1999, she was addicted to crack cocaine and weighed only 58 pounds. I remember her final days, in the roach-infested motel she called home, when her friends, the local prostitutes, would bring her crack and smoke it with her. For some reason they were drawn to her, perhaps because after they all got high, Sherrie would pull out her Bible and read to them. It may have been the only sense of hope they had. Even in the midst of her addiction and the undescribable grief of losing her daughter, Sherrie was still trying to lead the lost to Jesus.

I miss her terribly today, my family mourns every November 11, it was one of the most painful experiences for my mom to watch for 10 years, as she slowly wasted away. No parent should ever have to endure that. Our only solace and comfort is knowing she's with Jesus and finding out some day just how many lives she touched with reading God's Word to the broken, hopeless castoffs that our society has forgotten.

Today, I painfully remember and rejoice in God's mercy and lovingkindness. I'll be with you soon, my sister!
