China-Russia war games under way Feb 9, 2008 11:01 pm
131 Views
The Russian and Chinese armed forces have begun their first joint military exercises.

Marines will storm beaches and paratroopers will descend in a mock invasion of an imaginary country.

The eight-day operation got underway with consultations between military delegations from the two countries in Vladivostok, in Russia's far east.

Analysts say China and Russia are signalling they are prepared to counter US dominance in international affairs.

The Russian and Chinese military exercises starting this week are clearly a significant step for both countries.

Even in purely military terms, they appear ambitious.

They also add some substance to the political rhetoric that is now emerging from these two formerly uneasy and even hostile neighbours of a new strategic partnership.

And they underscore a common view of the desirability of a multipolar world in which there is some counterweight to US power.

Still, officially, the scenario for these exercises - aid to an imaginary state suffering political violence - is not aimed against any specific country.

China's military has been modernising rapidly. And, while the Washington regularly sounds alarm bells about China's growing military strength and says it will be keeping an eye on events, it also insists it is not particularly worried.

The Taiwanese, too, will be watching these exercises closely, although they are being held at some distance from Taiwan itself, and there is no appetite in Russia to be sucked into the island's argument with China.

There are specific practical benefits for both participants in these manoeuvres.

For the Russians, they are a showcase for possible further arms sales to Beijing.
For the Chinese, they're a chance to participate in the kind of complicated operations that are an increasing priority for them.

But there are clear limits to all of this.
These manoeuvres will not significantly alter the regional military balance.
And both Moscow and Beijing remain wary of each other.

For Moscow there must be questions over China's long-term strategic goals, and for Beijing continuing doubts about Russia's reliability as an ally. And, in the long run, this hardly looks like a stable relationship.

Russia approaches it from the perspective of a former and declining great power.
And while China is a country whose ambitions for the moment outstrip its actual power, that may not be the case
for too much longer.

Russia will use nuclear weapons if threatened Feb 9, 2008 10:57 pm
140 Views
Russia's military chief of staff said Saturday that Moscow could use nuclear weapons in preventive strikes in case of a major threat, the latest aggressive remarks from increasingly assertive Russian authorities.

"We have no plans to attack anyone, but we consider it necessary for all our partners in the world community to clearly understand ... that to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Russia and its allies , military forces will be used, including preventively, including with the use of nuclear weapons," General Yuri Baluyevsky said.

The comments from the hawkish Baluyevsky did not appear to mark a policy shift for Russia, whose leaders have stressed the need to maintain a powerful nuclear deterrent and reserved the right to carry out preventive strikes to counter existential threats.

But they were made at a time of increasingly strained relations between Moscow and the West, which are at odds over a range of issues and are embroiled in persistent disputes over US plans for missile defense facilities in former Soviet satellite states that have joined NATO as well as alliance members' refusal to ratify an updated European conventional arms treaty.

Russia says that the CFE treaty has become meaningless. Russia's parliament has voted to suspend Moscow's support for a key treaty limiting the deployment of armed forces along its border with Europe. Parliament's lower house, the Duma, unanimously agreed to temporarily abandon the 1990 Conventional Forces in Europe treaty (CFE)

The bill still faces approval in the upper house in December before President Vladimir Putin can sign it. The CFE is one of many issues recently putting Moscow at odds with the West.
The Duma approved the bill in the 418-0 vote.

Cornerstone of European security
Limits amount of key military equipment in designated are Negotiated by Nato and ex-Warsaw Pact member states Signed in 1990 and Came into force in 1992.Revised 1999 was never ratified by Nato.

BBC news

In the motion, MPs said the CFE treaty "no longer responds to the security interests of the Russian Federation" in light of Nato expansion and other factors in Europe.

The vote amounted to legislative confirmation of a decree signed by President Putin in July.

The CFE was one of the most significant arms control agreements of the Cold War years.

It set strict limits on the number of conventional weapons - battle tanks, combat aircraft, heavy artillery - that the members of the Warsaw Pact and Nato could deploy in European territory stretching from the Atlantic coast to the Urals.

In the wake of the collapse of communism, the treaty was revised in 1999, in part to address Russian concerns.

Russia ratified the 1999 revised version, but Nato has not done so.

Nato states are first demanding the withdrawal of Russian forces from Georgia and Moldova, but Moscow says the issues are not linked.

The Kremlin has also voiced concern over US plans to station part of a missile defence shield in Poland and the Czech Republic.

THE B.C. ENHANCED DRIVER’S LICENCE ( with identification (RFID) chip ) Feb 9, 2008 10:24 pm

ANCHORAGE – British Columbia is calling on the Canadian federal government, other provinces and U.S. states to press forward with enhanced driver’s licences that can serve as alternatives to passports at border crossings between Canada and the U.S.

“Ease of border travel is vital to families, communities and economies on both sides of the border, and we must work together to strengthen security and keep legitimate trade and travel moving between our two countries,” said Premier Gordon Campbell today at the 2007 summit of the Pacific Northwest Economic Region in Anchorage, Alaska.

Under existing U.S. rules, beginning as early as January 2008, all U.S. citizens and foreign nationals will be required to present a passport or other documents that show identity and citizenship when entering the United States by land or sea.“British Columbia wants to ensure enhanced drivers’ licences that will be issued by Canadian provinces and territories are explicitly accepted by U.S authorities as valid travel documents,” B.C. Intergovernmental Relations Minister John van Dongen said. “I joined Minister Stockwell Day for the signing of Washington State’s Enhanced Driver's Licence agreement with the U.S. government in March, and I look forward to doing the same with Minister Day in time to match our target date of January 2008.”

In December 2005, Premier Gordon Campbell and Washington Governor Chris Gregoire co-signed a letter to President Bush and Prime Minister Harper, expressing concerns about the impact of these new travel requirements on cross-border tourism. In June 2006, Washington and British Columbia began collaboration to put a project in place that will lead to the enhanced driver’s licence.

“Washington State and B.C. have worked closely to lead the establishment of enhanced driver licenses,” Washington director of licensing Liz Luce said. “It's convenient, it's secure and it's cost effective. Best of all it provides an option for our citizens.”

“Without providing an alternative to passports, there will be a significant impact on the tourism industry,” Tourism Victoria CEO and PNWER Tourism Working Group co-chair Lorne Whyte said. “Car traffic from the U.S. to B.C. is running 7.4 per cent below last year, in large part due to confusion and concern for passport requirements. We can’t control exchange rates or gas prices, but governments can act to make the border crossing both secure and smooth for travellers.”

“We’re working closely with the federal government to develop the plan to test an enhanced driver’s licence as a solution that meets the high security standards set by both federal governments and keeps legitimate traffic moving smoothly.” van Dongen said. “We aim to begin the first phase of our project in January 2008.”

“Travellers on both sides of the border are confused with the reviews and adjustments to dates and required documents for different types of travel, and they are frustrated with the long wait for passports,” said Jim Storie, chair of the Council of Tourism Associations. “The B.C. tourism industry has worked closely with the Province on the enhanced driver’s licence project: we look forward to its implementation giving tourist operators the certainty they need.

“The goal is to ensure safe, fast and convenient border crossing for travellers on both sides of the border, particularly as we move closer to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games,” Storie said.

Founded in 1991, Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER) is a public-private bipartisan partnership whose members include B.C., Alberta, Yukon, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. PNWER’s annual summits attract approximately 400 participants, including ministers and legislators from member jurisdictions, business organizations and private-sector industry associations, and senior officials from Canadian and U.S. governments

The Province of British Columbia and the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), in co-operation with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), are developing an optional enhanced driver’s licence (ED that will authorize holders to drive and could serve as an alternative to a passport for entry by land or water into the United States under the U.S. Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHT.

The WHTI is a U.S. law that requires all travellers, including U.S. and Canadian citizens, to present a valid passport or other approved secure document or combination of documents demonstrating identity and citizenship when travelling to, or through, the United States from within the Western Hemisphere. The U.S. WHTI was put into effect for air travellers on Jan. 23, 2007, and now only a valid passport or a NEXUS card is accepted at airports of entry. It will be put into effect for travellers entering the United States by land or sea no earlier than June 2009.

The EDL program will be implemented in phases. In Phase One, 500 EDLs will be issued to individuals who: are Canadian citizens; were born in British Columbia and hold a valid B.C. government-issued birth certificate; hold a valid B.C. driver’s licence;intend to use the EDL to travel to the United States by land or water; and agree to share select personal information in connection with the EDL with Canadian and U.S. border authorities.

How to apply?

Refer to the B.C. EDL Participant Guide available online. Appointments must be booked in advance by phone before attending a Driver Services Centre. Applicants will be required to complete citizenship and entitlement questionnaires, be interviewed by specially trained ICBC staff, and provide their consent to the ICBC to share their personal information with Canadian and U.S. border authorities.

How much does the EDL cost volunteers?

In the first phase, there is no cost for the EDL. When the program is fully implemented, there will be an additional charge, which has not yet been determined.

Why only 500 EDLs in phase one?

Limiting the number of EDLs in the first phase allows the government of British Columbia, as well as the CBSA and CIC to test the effectiveness of the EDL program, to ensure all citizenship, privacy, and security requirements of the Canadian and U.S. governments are met, and to gather feedback from participants and the various agencies involved before it is offered to more Canadian citizens residing in British Columbia who drive and wish to travel to the United States by land or water.

What makes this driver’s licence enhanced?

The EDL contains the same information as the standard B.C. driver’s licence, with the addition of a Canadian flag to distinguish the EDL from a standard driver’s licence, a machine-readable zone and a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip that contains a unique identifier to help border officials identify EDL holders at the border.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) chip

The EDL contains an RFID chip in the card. This chip contains a unique identifier to help U.S. border officials identify EDL holders and helps to speed processing at ports of entry. U.S. land and water border entry locations equipped with RFID readers will read the unique identifier and access the EDL holder’s personal information from a secure U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) database. This unique identifier is not a person’s driver’s licence number, and there is no other personal information stored on the RFID chip. The ICBC is providing security sleeves to protect the RFID chip from being read when it is not being used to cross the border. Tampering with or deactivating the RFID chip will invalidate the EDL as a border document.

Protection of privacy

An EDL is a voluntary and optional alternative document, and it requires certain personal information be shared much like what is now done with NEXUS and FAST cards. If Canadians do not wish to share this information, there are other eligible documents to use to enter the United States by land or water. In applying for an EDL, applicants will be asked to complete a citizenship and entitlement questionnaire and sign a personal information consent form that authorizes the ICBC to disclose information related to the EDL to CIC and the CBSA, which in turn will share specific information with U.S. CBP.

The personal information consent form authorizes the ICBC to disclose the following information to B.C.’s Vital Statistics Agency to verify the information on the applicant’s birth certificate that was provided as part of the EDL application process: name, birth date, gender, place of birth, registration number, certificate number (if available), and certificate issuance date.

Once an information-sharing agreement is signed between the CBSA and U.S. CPB, the CBSA will transfer specific information to U.S. CBP, which will store the information securely in a database and use it for the purposes of the EDL program, such as verifying identity and citizenship, for purposes connected with its use as a standard driver’s licence, as well as for purposes authorized by Canadian or U.S. law. Driving qualifications, driving conviction history, penalties or medical conditions are not disclosed to the CBSA or CIC, or to the United States, under the EDL program.

Applicants have the right to access the personal information collected about them under B.C.’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) and the federal Privacy Act and the Access to Information Act. The information collected by the ICBC can be accessed through a request to the ICBC Driver Services Centre where the in-person EDL application was made. A formal access request under FIPPA is not normally required.

The Province of British Columbia, the ICBC, and the Government of Canada are committed to respecting and protecting privacy rights. Both the federal and provincial privacy commissioners have been consulted on the development of the EDL program.

What other documents are accepted under the U.S. WHTI?Canadian citizens flying to, or through, the United States must present a valid Canadian passport or a NEXUS card when used at a NEXUS kiosk at the eight participating international airports in Canada.

Beginning on Jan. 31, 2008, Canadian citizens will require, at a minimum, government-issued photo identification, such as a driver’s licence, together with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or citizenship card, to enter the United States by land or water. Canadian citizens 18 years of age and under may present a birth certificate. As always, a passport, a NEXUS and a FAST card will be acceptable.

The United States has yet to issue the final rule for travel by land and sea under the U.S. WHTI, but it is expected that, in addition to passports, NEXUS cards, FAST cards and enhanced driver’s licences will be acceptable. The Government of Canada continues to recommend that travellers carry a valid Canadian passport for all visits abroad, including to the United States.

GOD MAGNIFIES HIS WORD ABOVE ALL HIS NAME Feb 8, 2008 8:42 pm

God’s name speaks of His great power and majesty, His perfect character and utter holiness. His is the name which is above every name AND YET HE MAGNIFIES HIS WORD ABOVE HIS VERY NAME. (Phil. 2:9)

Psalm 138

I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.
I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul. All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O LORD, when they hear the words of thy mouth. Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the LORD: for great is the glory of the LORD. Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me. The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands
.

God is true to his own word. In fact he is his word. If you say that you know Jesus and do not adhere to his word then you do not really know Jesus because Jesus is his word.

John 1:14

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth

John 1:18

No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

Colossians 1:15

Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence

2 Corinthians 3:18

But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord

The mirror is the Word of God. Jesus revealed in all His splendor. Jesus Christ is created in us by the transformation of the word of God...from one degree of glory to the other!

Herein lies the secret to Christian holiness: To know Jesus Christ as revealed in Scripture. The more we truly come to know Him, the more we become truly like Him.

As we let the Word of Christ dwell in us richly (Col. 3:16), our lives will increasingly reveal His glory. God has exalted His Word above all His name for there is power in Gods word which is the essence of Jesus Christ....God in the flesh...who dwelt amoung us and lives in us by his Spirit. The word and the Spirit agree together.

If you have not Gods word dwelling in you then you do not have Gods Spirit living in you. Herein know we truth from error. Every spirit that confesses not that Jesus Christ came in the flesh is not of God. Jesus Christ was THE WORD MADE FLESH!!!

Speaking the truth in love Feb 8, 2008 8:19 pm
281 Views
Speaking the truth in love, is not holding back parts of the truth. Paul said, "For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God" (Acts 20: 27). Paul appreciated the truth to the point of allowing it to make those whom he loved his enemies (Gal. 4: 16)

Love rather than causing one to withhold what is needed and applicable will actually precipitate "declaring the whole counsel of God" ( Prov. 13: 24).

Speaking the truth in love is not watering down the truth. Some seek to dilute and weaken the truth (I Pet. 2: 1, 2). "Preach the word: be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine" (2 Tim. 4: 2).

What speaking the truth in love is. ...

Jesus' teaching was "open" and "plain" (Mk. 8: 32; Jn. 10: 24, 11). One descriptive word used by the Holy Spirit to describe the preaching of the apostles is the Greek parresia, which is often translated "boldness" (Acts 4: 13, 29, 31). To the same people to whom Paul wrote "…speaking the truth in love," he later wrote in soliciting their prayers, "And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel" (Eph. 6: 19)

Speaking the truth in love necessitates the use of both the positive and negative. The word encourages good (positive) and exposes and condemns evil (negative, 3 Jn. 5-12).

Speaking the truth in love entails the presentation of all that God has said. What some do not realize who hold views that circumvent and prevent speaking the truth in love is that the truth sets free and saves (Jn. 8: 32, Jas. 1: 18ff.). Therefore, if one truly loves others, he will deliver the "whole counsel of God" (Acts 20: 27). Also, the word is designed to often be punitive in order that correction and repentance will follow (2 Tim. 4: 2, Heb. 12: 5ff.).

What to expect when there exists speaking the truth in love. First, spiritual growth should be expected and realized (Eph. 4: 15,). Christians should increase in spiritual growth and the lost should come to a knowledge of the truth. The church is God's arrangement to effect spiritual growth and spiritual increase is predicated on the presentation and reception of the truth.

One should also expect some adverse reactions to the matter of speaking the truth in love. Jesus' speaking the truth in love caused some of his disciples to "…walked no more with him" and even resulted in division among his Jewish brethren (Jn. 6: 66; 7: 43). Speaking the truth in love resulted in Stephen being murdered by a mad mob (Acts 7).

"…Speaking the truth in love," means that the hearer should primarily focus attention on the word being spoken, whether it is the truth. ( Acts 17: 11). This is what John called "…trying the spirits whether they are of God" (I Jn. 4: 1) All preachers should speak the truth and to speak it in love. Hence, there is the constant need not only for making sure what is taught is the truth (book, chapter, and verse, I Thes. 5: 21), but also that the motivation for speaking it is love.

There will always be those present who do not agree with the truth and seek to find fault with the speaker by charging, "…you are not speaking the truth in love!" By thus charging, they think that they have avoided the consequences of opposing the truth and have shifted guilt to the presenter of the truth. Paul spoke the truth in love, yet, he was relevant, cogent, plain, and often rebuking

( 2 Cor. 12: 20, 21)

THE CRY FROM HELL Feb 7, 2008 5:52 pm

THE CRY FROM HELL

Right now if we could put a megaphone into hell we would hear a resounded message “send!”. When a soul realizes that he cannot be freed from such torment his immediate plea is for his family, friends, neibours to be warned of such a place. In Luke 16 we see the story of the Rich man and Lazarus and when the Rich man is in eternal torment he cry’s out: “I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house. For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.” This is the cry of the damned “send!” Are we numb to this cry from hell dear Christian? Right now you can hear it millions of damned souls crying out send someone, tell someone, you have your entire life before you. We need a vision of hell amongst our modern day, lazy, undisciplined Christianity. We have a “cloud of witnesses” that have gone before us that were fully convinced of this truth and warned men of the judgement to come. Hear the words of Christ: “Then He shall say unto those on the left hand, "Depart from me, you cursed ones, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels!” Oh does that not shake your soul? or are you deafened by selfishness? deafened by worldliness? deafened by materialism? Will you not today hear the cry from hell.

Thomas Boston three hundred years ago wrote of the misery of the damned: “They shall never more taste of His goodness and bounty, nor have the least glimpse of hope from Him. They will see His heart to be absolutely alienated from them, and that it cannot be favorable towards them; that they are the party against whom the Lord will have indignation forever. They shall be deprived of the glorious presence and enjoyment of God– they shall have no part in the beatific vision; nor see anything in God towards them but one wave of wrath rolling after another! This will bring upon them overwhelming floods of sorrow for evermore.” Oh! hear the warning of

J.C. Ryle in response to a everlasting hell: “What would you say of the man who saw his neighbor's house in danger of being burned down, and never raised the cry of "fire?" What ought to be said of us as ministers if we call ourselves watchmen for souls, and yet see fires of hell raging in distance, and never give the alarm? Call it bad taste, if you like, to speak of hell. Call it charity to make things pleasant, and speak of smoothly, and soothe men with constant lullaby of peace. I have not read my Bible. My notion of charity is to warn men plainly of danger. My notion of taste in the ministerial office, is to declare all the counsel of God.”

MILLIONS OF AGES

J.C. Ryle an non-conformist from the 18th century writes on hell: “The punishment of hell shall be most severe. There is no pain like that of burning. Put your finger in the candle for a moment if you doubt this, and try. Fire is the most destructive and devouring of all elements. Look into the mouth of a blast furnace, and think what it would be to be there. Fire is of all elements most opposed to life. Creatures can live in air, and earth, and water; but nothing can live in fire. Yet fire is the portion to which the Christ-less and unbelieving will come. they will be ‘cast into the lake of fire.’ The punishment of hell will be eternal. Millions of ages will pass away, and the fire will never burn low and become dim. The fuel of that fire will never waste away and be consumed. it is ‘unquenchable fire.’

O reader, these are the sad and painful things to speak of. I have no-pleasure in dwelling on them. I could rather say with the apostle Paul, "I have great sorrow." But they are things written for our learning, and it is good to consider them. They are part of that Scripture which is all profitable, and they ought to be heard. Painful as the subject of hell is, it is one about which I dare not, cannot, and must not be silent.” What a fearful thought of an eternal hell! Millions and Millions of years but never relief or rest. Perpetual ongoing torment unceasing, never ending, eternity, eternity, eternity in hell!

C.H. Spurgeon spoke on hell much being faithful to warn the masses: "In hell there is no hope. They have not even the hope of dying--the hope of being annihilated. They are forever--forever--forever lost! On every chain in hell, there is written ‘forever’. In the fires there, blaze out the words, ‘forever’. Above their heads, they read, ‘forever’. Their eyes are galled and their hearts are pained with the thought that it is ‘forever’. Oh, if I could tell you tonight that hell would one day be burned out, and that those who were lost might be saved, there would be a jubilee in hell at the very thought of it. But it cannot be--it is ‘forever’ they are cast into the outer darkness.”

Christopher Love uses an illustration to try and help us understand what eternity means: “Suppose all the mountains of the earth were mountains of sand, and many more mountains still added thereto, till they reached up to heaven, and a little bird should once in every thousand years take one (grain of) sand of this mountain, there would be an innumerable company of years pass over before that mass of sand would be consumed and taken away, and yet this time would have an end; and it would be happy for man, if hell were no longer than this time; but this is man's misery in hell, he shall be in no more hope of coming out after he hath been there millions of years, then he was when he was first cast in there; for his torments shall be to eternity, without end, because the God that damns him is eternal.”

Dear reader if you feel lacking in this vision of hell cry out to God for it, plead for it, Oh we need this burden again tears over the truth of hell. Leonard Ravenhill spoke of this burden-less condition: “You can tell how bankrupt a preacher is when he prays in the pulpit they say nothing, ‘Lord bless us today, amen.’ Forget it! A parrot could do better in some churches. I believe to quote Whitefield, if I am going to preach on heaven I should live there a week before I preach. If I am going to preach on Hell I should get soaked in hell for a week. Bring the atmosphere of heaven, bring the atmosphere of hell! When we do that the house of God will not be empty.”

A LOST SOUL SPEAKS

John Bunyan the famous baptist preacher before his conversion attempted suicide and was given a vision of hell of which he recounts of a soul there speaking of hell: "Our miseries in this infernal dungeon are of two sorts; what we have lost, and what we undergo. And these I will name under their several heads. First then for what we have lost. Here we have likewise lost the company of saints and angels, and in their place have nothing but tormenting devils. Here we have lost heaven too. The seat of blessedness. There is a deep gulf betwixt us and heaven, so that we are shut out from thence forever. Those everlasting gates that let the blessed into happiness are now for ever shut against us here.

To make our wretchedness far yet more wretched, we have lost the hope of ever being in a better state, which renders our condition truly hopeless. The most miserable man upon earth still has hope. And therefore, it is a common proverb there that were it not for hope, the heart would break. Well may our hearts break then since we are both without hope and help. This is what we have lost; which, but to think on, is enough to fear and rend and gnaw upon our miserable souls forever. Yet, oh, that his were all! But we have sense of pain as well as loss. And having showed you what we have lost, I am trying to show you what we undergo. And first, we undergo variety of torments: we are tormented here a thousand, nay, ten thousand different ways.

They that are most afflicted upon earth have seldom any more than one malady at a time. But should they have the plague, the gout, the stone, and fever at a time, how miserable would they think themselves? Yet all those are but like the biting of a flea to those intolerable, pungent pains that we endure. Here we have all the loathed variety of hell to grapple with. Here is a fire that is unquenchable to burn us with; a lake of burning brimstone ever choking us; eternal chain to tie us; here is utter darkness to affright us, and a worm of conscience that gnaws upon us everlastingly. And any one of these is worse to bear than all the torments mankind ever felt on earth.”

“But as our torments here are various, so are they universal, too, afflicting each part of the body, tormenting the powers of the soul, which renders what we suffer most unsufferable. In those illnesses you men are seized with on earth, though some parts are afflicted, other parts are free. Although your body may be out of order, your head may yet be well; and though your head be ill, your vitals may be free; or though your vitals be affected, your arms and legs may still be clear. But here it is otherwise: each member of the soul and body is at once tormented. The eye is here tormented with the sight of the devil's who do appear in all the horrid shapes and black appearances that sin can give them. The ear is continually tormented with the loud yellings and continual outcries of the damned. The nostrils smothered with sulphurous flames; the tongue with burning blisters; and the whole body rolled in flames of liquid fire. And all the powers and faculties of our souls are here tormented. The imagination, with the thoughts of the present pain; the memory lost with reflecting on what a heaven we have lost, and of those opportunities we had of being saved. Our minds are here tormented with considering how vainly we have spent our precious time, and how we have abused it. Our understanding is tormented in the thoughts of our past pleasures, present pains, and future sorrows, which are to last for ever. And our consciences are tormented with a continual gnawing worm.”

“Another thing that makes our misery awful is the extremity of our torments. The fire that burns us is so violent that all the water in the sea can never quench it. The pains we suffer here are so extreme that it is impossible they should be known by any one but those that feel them. Another part of our misery is the ceaselessness of our torments. As various, as universal, and as extremely violent as they are, they are continual, too. Nor have we the least rest from them. If there were any relaxation, it might be some allay. But this makes our condition so deplorable that there is no easing of our torments, but what we suffer now we must for ever suffer. The society or company we have here is another element in our misery. Tormenting devils and tormented souls are all our company; and dreadful shrieks and howlings, under the fierceness of our pain, and fearful oaths, is all our conversation. And here the torments of our fellow sufferers are so far from lessening our misery that they increase our pain.

The place in which we suffer is another thing that increases our sufferings. It is the abstract of all misery, a prison, a dungeon, a bottomless pit, a lake of fire and brimstone, a furnace of fire that burns to eternity, the blackness of darkness for ever; and lastly, hell itself. And such a wretched place as this must needs increase our wretchedness. The cruelty of our tormentors is another thing that adds to our torments. Our tormentors are devils in whom there is no pity; but being tormented themselves, do yet take pleasure in tormenting us.

All those particulars that I have reckoned up are very grievous; but that which makes them much more grievous is that they shall ever be so; and all our most intolerable sufferings shall last to all eternity. 'Depart from Me ye cursed into everlasting fires' is that which is perpetually sounding in my ears. Oh, that I could reverse that fatal sentence! Oh, that there was but a bare possibility of doing it! Thus have I showed you the miserable situation we are in, and shall be in forever."

In the prophet Jeremiah God said to the hell bound nation of Moab “I will weep for thee.” Can we share God’s tears for those that are walking in the vanity of their minds and apart from God. Weep Christian!

DO YOU WANT YOUR EARS TICKLED OR DO YOU WANT TRUTH ? Feb 6, 2008 2:05 pm

In this day and age, churches are filled with people who want their ears tickled and felt needs met. Pastors water down the message to promote an easy believism that only scratches the surface of explaining the power and authority of Christ and His Message.

Preaching A Superficial Gospel

A warning against preaching an unbiblical modern gospel

A POPULAR PERVERSION

Is it possible that modern popular Christianity is preaching a spurious, superficial, shallow Gospel in the 21st Century? If you look carefully at the history of the people of Israel many times the “popular” majority of priests and prophets turned from preaching the truth before the people and became profane in their speech and life’s. In Jeremiah’s time we see this recorded in Holy Scriptures: “For both prophet and priest are profane; yea, in my house have I found their wickedness, saith the Lord.” What horror! what dismay to see almost all of the spiritual leaders of Israel speaking lies in the name of the Lord. Could this happen again? Is it possible that in our modern day evangelical circles there are many that are not preaching a true genuine, Biblical Gospel? True Christianity is never popular Christianity! True Christianity is accepted by few and rejected by many. True Christianity is an abhorrence to the flesh, devil and the world. True Christianity is a Cross! Death to self! Crucifixion to the world! But we want it easy a salvation and Gospel that does not hurt us or crucifies us. We want a Gospel that is catered to man and his interests.

A DOCTRINE OF SATAN

Milton Green shares in one of his conferences on the theme of a false modern day Gospel: “I am going to read to you a statement that Martin Luther made and I want you to listen! Martin Luther wrote this, ‘I should have never foreseen that Satan would raise a sect as such that teach the ten commandments should be taken out of the Church. And that men should not be terrified by the Law.’ Are you terrified by the Law? Martin Luther said he was! Moses trembled. Do you reckon Moses knew anything what is being said? Martin Luther continues, ‘And that men should not be terrified by the Law but gently exhorted by the preaching of the grace of Christ.’ You know ‘gently exhorted!’ Martin Luther also said it is a doctrine of Satan, that men are no longer terrified by the Law and have replaced it with a Gospel of love and grace only.” The law and fear of God are foundational aspects of True Christianity and to replace those with the love and grace of God is to build on sand. This Gospel of love and grace has a paramount place in the evangelical Church today. If a minister speaks of the Law and the Judgement of God he is considered by most a extremist and legalist without a proper conception of God’s grace. In the last days Scripture speaks of many false teachers and gospels to abound in the world. In the epistle to Timothy the Apostle Paul wrote: “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.” Could it be possible that you have been believing on a false, spurious gospel? Is it possible that you have been preaching a superficial gospel that does not relate the whole counsel of God to your hearers?

UNBIBLICAL BIBLE PREACHING

Milton Green continues to share on this false gospel: “I have a book back here called ‘Todays Gospel’, I don’t have too much to do with books, unless I know there is a whole lot of anointing and truth in it and thats what I found in this book. There’s some truth in it, It’s good! And this is what Walter Chantry said in his book, ‘We have inherited a system of evangelistic preaching which is unbiblical. Our message and manner of preaching the gospel cannot be traced back to the Reformers and their creeds. They are much more recent innovations worse that cannot be traced back to the Scriptures. They have clearly arisen from the careless mixture of 20th century reason with God’s revelation. Products of modern evangelism are often sad examples of Christianity. They make a profession of faith and then continue to live like the world. Only a small proportion of those that make decisions evidence a transformed life. When emotional hope is gone and the evangelist invitation is moved to another city. What do you have that is real and lasting? Large numbers have been led to assume that they have a right to everlasting life and have been given assurance that does not belong to them.’

In other words I am going to add it’s a false security! ‘Evangelicals are swelling the ranks of the deluded with a perverted gospel! Many who have made decisions in Churches have been told in the inquiry rooms their sins have been forgiven will be surprised to hear I never knew you depart from me! What about those that have decided for Christ and you cannot tell what they decided. They do not study the Word, they don’t mind if they are absent when it’s preached. You know they give no evidence of true conversion. Have you considered the possibility they were never evangelized at all?’

Thousands of sinners think of God having only one attribute, love! When you tell a stranger ‘God loves you’ his mind registers something like this, ‘Yes he loves me, he would never harm me so all is well with my soul.’ To say to a rebel ‘God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life’ is a terrible misinforming. The truth is that God is holy! Thus He is angry with the sinner at this moment. Wrath already hangs over the head of the guilty and will forever torment him unless he repents and trusts God. This plan is not so wonderful!

Sinners frequently think of God as flexible so that He will by no means punish the wonderful men. If you rush into four easy steps with a man that has a defective view of God, you will deceive him. You may lead him to pray after you, and you will be praying to the God of glorious holiness but when he repeats to God in his prayer he’s going to be praying to another god, he don’t know Him. Preaching several easy steps to heaven is not evangelism, preaching the whole counsel of God is!

Paul was a missionary evangelist he could say to his ephesian elders I am free or I am pure from the blood of all men. Not because he had given each person four spiritual laws, the next verse substantiates this claim. ‘For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God.’ You know why some people shrink back from declaring the whole counsel of God? Because it upsets flesh!”

A WONDERFUL AND HORRIBLE THING

Jeremiah wrote this when a entire nation was embracing a false gospel: “A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their own means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?” What shock should we experience if we realize that a false Gospel abounds and overflows in our evangelical Churches. Could it be possible that just as in the days of Amos the prophet today it is the same as was prophesied: “Behold, the days come with the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.” I hear of this desperate searching from many in this day that are seeking out Churches were true biblical doctrine is preached. Where the conviction of the Spirit of God, the burden of lost sinners, the judgement of God are preaching. How rare it is to find such a Church were there is not just presented floppy, sappy, feel-good messages that warm the backslidden soul.

Milton Green continues to share on this false gospel: “Present day preaching only pays lip service to the concept that a man must recognize himself to be a sinner before he can genuinely embrace the Saviour. No definition of sin is included in this presentation. It is God’s Law that convicts of sin. It is essential to declare the Commandments in order to show the sinner his heart of hatred toward God and enmity towards men. Only then will he flee to the grace of God in Christ Jesus to provide him righteousness and love. Men are not turning to Christ because they have a sense of sinning against the Lord, they have no concept of sinning because the Law of God is not preached. In the 20th Century the Church is tried to see how little it could say and still get converts! It is succeeding in spreading the truth so thinly that the world cannot see it! We must preach the holy character of God. We must preach the eternal Law of God. Where are the pulpits showing God’s clear Law makes strict demands upon motives, desires, feelings and attitudes of the soul? When you find them or pastors that preach these things, you will also discover Churches with convicted sinners prepared to hear the way of salvation.”

“Our ears have grown accustomed to hearing men told ‘accept Jesus as your personal saviour.’ A form of words that is not found in Scripture. It’s become a empty phrase that totally ignores a essential element of the Gospel namely repentance. Evangelists and pastors are forgetting to tell sinners to repent this misinformation leads sinners to believe that they can live in their old way of live and just add Jesus. Build treasures on earth and also build treasures in heaven! Who could turn down that bargain? Pleasures of sin and joys of eternity! Sinners are not being saddened or offended, repentance is necessary for forgiveness, confession of sin is not enough. Churches are being filled with professing Christians that have never heard that Jesus demands repentance of any who seek eternal life. People flock to accept Jesus as personal Saviour without selling all!

The converts of modern evangelism are often as worldly as after their decision as before. In a panic over this phenomena, modern day evangelicals have invented the idea of a carnal Christian. They are said to be folks that have taken the gift of eternal life without turning from sin. They have allowed Jesus to be their Saviour but they have not yielded their life to the Lord. No one is saved while being unrepentant! What a lie! Giving false assurance to sinners is a Scriptural sign of a false prophet.”

Peter the Apostle said “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.” Oh to realize this is happening now in our modern day evangelical circles! “damnable heresies” being spoken from renown pulpits across America.

This half-gospel that is being preached nullifies God’s power and makes it void. Jesus Christ our Lord spoke these words: “ye have made the commandments of God of none effect by your tradition!” And dare I say that our modern day evangelical “traditions” have made the word of God of “none effect.” May God anoint his vessels in these last days to preach a true Biblical gospel message in our day.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A CARNAL CHRISTIAN Feb 6, 2008 1:22 pm

Paul Washer ministered as a missionary to Peru for 10 years, during which time he founded the HeartCry Missionary Society to support Peruvian church planters. HeartCry’s work now supports indigenous missionaries in Eastern Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. An itinerant preacher, Paul also teaches in the internship program at his home church, First Baptist Muscle Shoals. He is the author of The One True God: A Biblical Study of the Doctrine of God

Text: 2 Corinthians 13:5

There is so much that can be handled on the front end of ministry. Sheep have this uncanny knack of just following. Let’s talk about assurance, and let’s talk pastorally. Will I ask them about their conversion, that moment in time when they were saved? Of course I will. Explain to me your heart, your conversion, what happened with regards to faith and repentance. But I will not stop there because that is not the place where Scripture places its emphasis regarding assurance. The fact that you know you are saved is whether you are presently believing in Christ and repenting of your sin.

The doctrine of the carnal Christian is used to justify the majority of the congregation being lost. There is no such thing as a “carnal Christian” in the New Testament. There were only believers and unbelievers. Can Christians fall in sin? Yes. Can they even become overcome by sin? Yes. But can they remain in that sin? No.

I frequently examine myself and test myself. It is an extremely important thing. I want to tell you how bad I deal with the flesh. We think too much of men. If I wasn’t preaching and the spotlight was not on me, would I be praying as much? Would I be this excited if the spotlight was on me? You see, there is always a need to examine ourselves, to test ourselves. I hear preachers saying who are practicing homosexuals, “Three years ago you prayed the prayer and became a Christian. Now you must start acting like a Christian.” No! You cannot start acting like a Christian because you are not one. If you are not acting like a Christian, you can have no biblical assurance.

There is a difference between the security of the believer and assurance. Baptist have taken the two and combined them and at the same time have lost both. Everyone who truly believes in Christ can have security. Everyone who believes in Christ has security. But assurance asks, “How do you know that you really believed?” The demons believe and tremble, but you believe and don’t tremble. So how do you know? The heart is desperately wicked, how can one know it? How can members of our congregation have a biblical understanding to assurance? The answer is in the book of 1 John.

1 John 5:13 [/B]“These things I have written to you . . . that you may know that you have eternal life.” Assurance is a grace; assurance is a gift. You can be a true believer and be frightened by assurance. The true believer gains assurance not just by an inward testimony, but the Spirit bears with witness with our spirit that we are children of God by bearing fruit in our lives and applying God’s Word to our hearts in a lifestyle of obedience. I want to look at a series of tests about assurance.

1. 1 John 1:5-7This is the message that we have heard from him and announce to you that God is light and in him there is not darkness at all.” I want you to look at this from a different context. Gnostics seemed to be attacking this Church, saying that God’s will is a mystery, dark, and cannot be known. John is saying that God’s will is not dark or hidden. He has revealed to us who He is, and He has shown us His character and will. It’s not a mystery, and we know what he desires. If we say we are a Christian, yet walk in darkness, we light and do not practice the truth.” To walk in light is to walk according to what God has revealed us in His nature and will, to walk in agreement with the character and purposes of God. To contradict this is to lie. The idea “walk” is absolutely important here. To walk refers to every activity of life, every compartment of life. It is all-encompassing.

It is not like a snapshot but like a video camera that has captured the style of life, not a moment in time but disposition of an individual. A Christian is not doing all the righteous things he hates in order to go to heaven. Rather, he is a new creature. He has a new heart. If you contradict this, you should be afraid because you do not have assurance, and if you keep on walking in the way contrary to the will and character of God, you do not know Him.

2. 1 John 1:8-10 John is not talking about sinless perfection. The first test is that the person will live a style of life that reflects THAT HE IS A CHRISTIAN The second test is that the Christian is sensitive to his sin which will lead to confession and repentance. Here’s one of the marvellous thing. The true Christian is not the perfect person who has no sin, but those who recognize their sin and are broken heart and have a contrite spirit and tremble at His Word
( Isa. 66 ) A true Christian will be sensitive with regards to his sin because he is conscious of the holiness of God.

3. 1 John 2:3-5 The most terrifying verse in the Bible is, “Depart form Me: I never knew you!” Depart from me those of you who think you are my disciples when you live as though there was no command for you to obey. You do what is right in your own eyes. There is no sense of the supremacy of God’s will. You act as though the commands of God are burdensome to you. They are a delight. There ought to be a difference in your life with regards to the commands of God. If not, you are a liar, and the truth is not in you. This is the apostle of love speaking!

There is a sense in which all of us are cowards. Some of the worst cowards I have seen are preachers. You are not showing love in your timidity and niceness. You are showing self-preservation. Our people need to know that we will die for them; they must also know that we will tell the truth even if they will hate us. I am not called to be your buddy; I am called to be one who will minister to them. A mean-spirited critical man is a lost man, but a “nice” preacher is not acceptable either. Like John, you must be willing to tell them, “You are a liar.”

4. 1 John 2:6 The greatest desire in the heart of the Christian is to be like Jesus, to walk as he walked. Will we stumble? Yes. Will we look ridiculous sometimes? Yes. But there should be no doubt that his chief desire is to be like Jesus.

5. 1 John 2:9-11 One of the greatest evidences of true conversion is love for the brethren, to fellowship with them, and to serve them. If you want to accuse the godly and avoid them, you are not the Christian. The Christian will love them. It means identifying with them even in the midst of suffering, persecution, and even death . (cf. Heb. 10:32-34) “But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. “ You must willingly to determine to suffer and die with your brothers which has far reaching implications. We are so well fed when brothers starve.

The are others throughout 1 John (time limitation).

Addressing the “once saved, always saved” thinking (versus perseverance of the saints)

Jeremiah 32:40
The covenant promise: I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn away from doing good to them.
The covenant reality: And I will put the fear of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me.

Everyone who has received the covenant promise will experience the covenant reality. They will not turn because the fear of God is put them. Everyone Jesus justifies, He takes home

FINNEY'S FAILURE Feb 5, 2008 1:53 am

FINNEY wrote:

In a revival, the Christian's heart is liable to get crusted over, and lose its relish for divine things; his unction and prevalence in prayer abate, and then he must be renewed again. It is impossible to keep him in such a state as not to do injury to the work, unless he passes through such a process every few days. I have never labored in revivals in company with any one who would keep in the work and be fit to manage revival continually, who did not pass through this process of breaking down as often as once in every two or three weeks E.E. Shelhamer, Finney On Revival,

JAMES BOYLE -- As a co-worker with Finney, Boyle wrote on December 25th, 1834:

Dear brother Finney, let us look over the fields where you and others have labored as revival ministers, and what is now their moral state? What was their condition within three months after we left them? I have visited and revisited many of these fields, and groaned in spirit to see the sad, frigid, carnal, contentious state into which the churches have fallen--and fallen very soon after our first departure from them B.B. Warfield, Perfectionism,

ASA MAHAN -- wrote:

The people were left like a dead coal which could not be re-ignited; the pastors were shorn of all their spiritual power, and the evangelists--and I was personally acquainted with nearly all of them--I cannot recall a single man, brother Finney and father Nash excepted, who did not after a few years lose his unction, and become equally disqualified for the office of evangelist and that of pastor Ibid

No individual, I believe, ever disciplined Christians so severely and with such intense and tireless patience as my brother Finney. Appalled at the backsliding which followed his revivals of 1831-32, his most earnest efforts were put forth to induce among believers permanence in the divine life. In accomplishing this he knew of but one method: absolute and fixed renunciation of sin, consecration to God, and purpose of obedience. MY NOTE:UNDER THE LAW

During his pastorate at Chatham Street Chapel in New York City, for example, he held for weeks in succession special meetings in his church for perfecting his work, and never were a class of poor creatures carried through a severer process of discipline than were these.

Years afterward, as their pastor informed me, those believers affirmed that they have never recovered from the internal weakness and exhaustion which had resulted from the terrible discipline through which Mr. Finney had carried them, and this was all the good that had resulted from his efforts.

When he came to Oberlin, and entered upon the duties of his professorship, he felt that God had given him a blessed opportunity to realize in perfection his ideal of a ministry for the churches. He had before him a mass of talented and promising theological students, who had implicit confidence in the wisdom of their teacher, and with equal sincerity would follow his instructions and admonitions.

He accordingly, for months in succession, gathered together those students at stated seasons, instructed them most carefully in regard to the nature of the renunciation of sin, consecration to Christ, and purpose of obedience, required of them.

Then, under his teachings and admonitions, they would renew their renunciations, consecrations and purpose of obedience, with all the intensity and fixedness of resolve of which their natures were capable. The result, in every case, was one and the same: not the new life, and joy and peace, and power that was anticipated, but groaning bondage under the law of sin and death.

At the commencement, and during the process of each meeting, their confessions and renunciations, their solemn consecrations and vows of obedience, were renewed, if possible, with fuller determination than ever before.

Each meeting, however, was closed with the same dirge song: "Look, how we grovel here below," or, "Where is the blessedness I knew, when first I saw the Lord?" or, "Return, O Holy Dove, return." And as they went out, not their songs of joy and gladness were heard, but their groans became more and more terribly audible

FINNEY'S [UNSCRIPTURAL] "PELAGIAN" THEOLOGY Feb 5, 2008 1:43 am
214 Views
ORIGINAL SIN -- We deny that the human constitution is morally depraved, because it is impossible that sin should be a quality of the substance of the soul or body. It is, and must be, a quality of choice or intention, and not of substance. To represent the constitution as sinful, is to represent God, who is the author of the constitution, as the author of sin. What ground is there for the assertion that Adam's nature became in itself sinful by the fall? This is a groundless, not to say ridiculous, assumption, and an absurdity (Finney's Systematic Theology, pp. 249,250).

REGENERATION -- Regeneration implies an entire present change of moral character, that is, a change from entire sinfulness to entire holiness (Ibid., p. 291).

JUSTIFICATION BASED UPON SANCTIFICATION -- We see that, if a righteous man forsake his righteousness, and die in his sin, he must sink to hell. Whenever a Christian sins he becomes under condemnation, and must repent and do his first works, or be lost (Ibid., p. 124).

OBEDIENCE -- That which the precept demands must be possible to the subject. That which demands a natural impossibility cannot be moral law. To talk of inability to obey moral law is to talk nonsense (Ibid., p. 2).

ENTIRE SANCTIFICATION -- It is self-evident, that entire obedience to God's law is possible on the ground of natural ability. To deny this, is to deny that a man is able to do as well as he can. The very language of the law is such as to level its claims to the capacity of the subject, however great or small that capacity may be.

"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength." Here then it is plain, that all the law demands, is the exercise of whatever strength we have, in the service of God. Now, as entire sanctification consists in perfect obedience to the law of God, and as the law requires nothing more than the right use of whatever strength we have, it is, of course, forever settled, that a state of entire sanctification is attainable in this life, on the ground of natural ability

THE SECURITY OF THE BELIEVER -- It is not intended that saints, or the truly regenerated, cannot fall from grace, and be finally lost, by natural possibility. It must be naturally possible for all moral agents to sin at any time. Saints on earth and in heaven can by natural possibility apostatize and fall, and be lost. Were not this naturally possible, there would be no virtue in perseverance
Editor: Steve Van Nattan-- This is the basis of all Fundamental Baptist altar calls. Though most Baptists claim to believe that the believer is eternally secure, when they are giving an alter call, they become practical Pelagians, and they do everything possible to cast doubt on the believer's salvation in order to get a response and to get movement toward the front of the
meeting.

Now you know where the modern humanist Evangelical Doctrine comes from.
