Amazing Grace John Newton Jun 25, 2008 12:16 am

Amazing grace. It's the only way to describe the incredible transformation that took place in the life of John Newton. Newton was born in London in 1725. His mother died when he was seven. His father sent him to sea at age eleven. Working first as a cabin boy and then a deckhand, John was exposed to a life of drunkenness, profanity and immorality -- and he embraced it.

Soon, John surpassed his peers in outrageous behavior. Sharp-witted and sarcastic, he wrote offensive songs mocking the ship's officers and expressing his contempt for their authority. He amused himself by inventing new swear words and leading his peers on reckless and dangerous escapades. He frequently deserted his post. Still in his teens, John was briefly enslaved on an African plantation and nearly died. But instead of sobering him, the experience only served to strengthen his rebellious spirit.

After Newton regained his freedom, he served time in the British Navy and eventually became captain of his own slave ship. As a slave trader, Newton's heart grew even harder. He earned a reputation for being a foul-mouthed, ill-tempered man, despised by his subordinates and superiors alike. He cared for no one but himself and sought nothing but his own pleasure.

Then one night, John Newton hit rock bottom. He had been punished for misbehavior by being publicly humiliated, beaten, and stripped of his rank. His attempts to regain his position had failed. No one cared to take up his cause. Now caught in a fierce storm, he came face to face with a gripping fear of death. As the waves pounded the ship and filled his cabin with water, terror filled Newton's heart. He fought desperately to save the ship, bailing water and plugging holes in the hull with the ship's sails, burlap bags, even his own clothing. As an experienced sailor, John knew he had little chance of survival. And he was not ready to face eternity.

Memories of his childhood came flooding back -- the Bible verses and hymns his God-fearing mother had taught him, her prayers on his behalf. John tried to cry out to God for mercy, but he was stopped abruptly by the thought of how little he deserved it. How could he turn to God for help, when he had ignored Him for so long? John spent a harrowing night in deep soul-searching.

The following day, the storm subsided. Miraculously, the battered ship found safe harbor. It was then, Newton said, that he became convinced that "there is a God that hears and answers prayers." He discovered a new the love of God expressed in Scripture:

"God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved" (John 3:16,17).

In the midst of the storm, Newton's eyes had been opened. He realized that he was a sinner, in need of a Savior. For the first time, he understood the meaning of God's grace. Repenting of the sins of his past, he surrendered his life to God completely. In an instant, he became a new man.

Years later, as he reflected on his experience, Newton penned the words:

Amazing Grace -- how sweet the sound -- that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved; how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come; 'tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.

At the age of 39, the former slave trader became a pastor. He dedicated the rest of his life to sharing with others the good news of the gospel: that Jesus Christ had come to 'seek and save the lost.' (Luke 19:10) Newton led the abolitionist movement in Great Britain, exposing the evils of slavery and fighting to outlaw the vile trade he had once engaged in. In his epitaph, he summed up his life this way:

John Newton, Clerk,
Once an infidel and libertine,
A servant of slaves in Africa,
Was by the rich mercy of our Lord and Saviour
Jesus Christ,
Preserved, restored, pardoned,
And appointed to preach the faith he
Had long laboured to destroy...

Grace, the Cat story reveals Gods love to undeserving humanity. Jun 25, 2008 12:05 am

No one realize when we named this beautiful calico kitten "Grace" that we would learn the true meaning of the word "grace" because of the way she died.

Her fur was yellow, white and black. Grace was little, but her ears were very very long. She was playful and loving. She was funny when she played with a golf ball. Jennifer got Grace from her friend Noel, and we all loved her.

Our next door neighbor, Michael hurt Grace by throwing rocks at her. Her ribs were crushed and broken. We did not know where Grace was or what had happened to her. She was missing for several days when she finally came home dragging her broken legs. We took care of her the best that we could, but her body was bleeding inside. She died a week later.

One day Michael came over to play. He said "Someone must have thrown rocks at Grace." Then mom knew that Michael had been the one to hurt Grace. mom told Michael that when we do something wrong we should confess and ask for forgiveness. And that is what Michael did. He told us he was sorry, and asked God to forgive him.

Wow. It was very hard to forgive someone who has hurt a precious pet that your family loved very much, especially when that person hurt that pet on purpose just to be mean. But we all did forgive Michael because God tells us that when someone says they are sorry and asks to be forgiven we must, or else God will not forgive us when we do wrong things.

We all learned the meaning of what "Grace" is. It means to be forgiven even when we do not deserve to be forgiven. Jesus died on a cross for us so that our sins could be forgiven by the Grace of God.

REASONING THE SCRIPTURES Jun 24, 2008 8:39 am

Christ commissioned His followers to take the gospel to the whole world (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15). Apologetics plays an important role in helping us fulfill this commission.

Evangelization means communicating the truth of Christ. Sometimes this truth generates questions and objections about the Faith. Apologetics addresses these concerns. the apologist task is to reveal the mental barriers people sometimes have to the gospel. Man cannot generate faith, but used only by God to help create the conditions which place a person with an opportunity to hear the gospel. Once that is done, it is up to the Holy Spirit to touch the heart and mind of the person to believe. The holy Spirits job is to release saving faith.

Christian apologetics is the field of study concerned with the systematic defense of Christianity. The term "apologetic" comes from the Greek word apologia απολογία which means in defense of. Therefore, a skilled person involved in Christian or Bible Apologetics is a defender of Christianity. Those who engage in Christian apologetics are called "Christian apologists".

Christian apologetics have taken many forms over the centuries, starting with Paul of Tarsus, including writers such as Augustine of Hippo and Thomas Aquinas, and continuing currently with the modern Christian community, through the efforts of many authors in various Christian traditions such as C.S. Lewis. Apologists have based their defense of Christianity on favoring interpretations of historical evidence, philosophical arguments, scientific investigation, and other disciplines.

This Classical Greek term appears in the Koine (that is, common) Greek of the New Testament. The apostle Paul employed the term "apologia" in his trial speech to Festus and Agrippa when he said, "I make my defense" (Acts 26:2). In the English language, the word apology, derived from the Greek word "apologia", usually refers to asking for forgiveness for an action that is open to blame. Christian apologetics are meant, however, to argue that Christianity is reasonable and in accordance with the evidence that can be examined.

Let No Man Put Asunder (Pull Apart). Jun 23, 2008 9:02 pm

God's guarantee in His covenant to every believer is that they have the absolute right and command to serve Him whole-heartedly without exception, otherwise divorce is His will. Therefore, when God say's, "... let no man put asunder," man (the marriage partners) are NOT pulling the marriage apart, HE IS!

“Is it lawful for a MAN to divorce...” (Matthew 19:3).

“Therefore what God has joined together, let no MAN put asunder [ apart ]” (Matthew 19:6b).

Who is this “man”? Who is the one promoting the separation? Can anybody outside the marriage divorce the husband and wife if they themselves did not want to be divorced? Of course not! You may be able to physically separate the husband and wife from each other, but not the marriage or “oneness” that they possess in their hearts. The “man” in Matthew 19:3b, 6b are the marriage partners. “Therefore what God has joined together, let not ...[the marriage partners] ...separate” (Matthew 19:6b). The Scripture is saying, concerning a God-ordained marriage, not to let the original desire to separate or divorce, grow out of the husband's or wife's heart. The Scripture does NOT say, “therefore what God has joined together, let not GOD separate,” but “let not man (the marriage partners) separate” out of self-gratification.

There is a vast difference between us doing something from our own self-gratification, and us carrying out the loving will of our heavenly Father. The very actions themselves that we carry out may appear to “look” the same, but the unseen part that makes the difference between a sinful act and a righteous act, is the desire of your heart. DIVORCE ITSELF IS NOT WRONG, BUT WHEN IT’S USED FOR SELFISH PLEASURE, IT IS!

God Brings Together and God Pulls Apart

We act as though we believe that once God has “joined together” a man and a woman, that He somehow loses His sovereign position as God, and cannot separate the two if the situation warrants it. As we have just read from Ezra and Nehemiah, that is just not so. God is God! For “...He has mercy on whom He wills, and whom He wills He hardens” (Romans 9:1. (See also Exodus 33:19.)

We see God using His sovereign right to remove the kingdom, a type of family headship, from one of the greatest kings ever: Solomon. “[For] ...King Solomon loved many foreign women ...[For] ...the Lord had said to the children of Israel, ‘YOU SHALL NOT INTERMARRY WITH THEM, NOR THEY WITH YOU. Surely they will turn away your hearts after their gods...’ So the Lord became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned from the Lord God of Israel. Therefore the Lord said to Solomon, ‘BECAUSE YOU HAVE DONE THIS [married against My will], and have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, I WILL SURELY TEAR THE KINGDOM AWAY FROM YOU and give it to your servant’” (1Kings 11:1,2,9,11).

It has been wrongly taught that breaking a marriage covenant should NEVER be done. But we forget that God is jealous for a righteous holy-living people. When we join into covenant agreements that fly right in the face of His will, be assured that He will expect us to correct it; not just to keep on going as if nothing had happened and ask Him to “bless” it.

The vow, “to death do us part” that we make at our wedding is not found in the Bible. We can’t even keep ourselves by our OWN strength in the love of God, and yet we are going to commit ourselves to love someone else forever? A scriptural vow that would be more appropriate to promise one another on our wedding day would be: “By the GRACE OF GOD, AND THROUGH HIS STRENGTH, I GIVE myself to you all the days of my life, to have and to hold, to love and to cherish....” For in ourselves we are weak.

However, because of being born again into Christ, we CAN do all things through Christ who gives us the strength through His grace (See Philippians 4:13). As we yield our heart to God, everyday His glorious love will flow from Him, through us, and to our mate. The only thing that will ever separate our hearts on this earth is when we pass on to meet our Maker.

The Scripture that says for us to, “have no other gods before [you]” (Exodus 20:3) deals with relationship. For RELATIONSHIP IS COVENANT! Therefore, if there is a relationship in our life that we want more than what the Lord God wants us to have, we are in covenant relationship outside of His will. When God’s relationship with us is interfered with by another relationship, He will ask us to make the proper adjustments in our heart or break the relationship. If we won’t give the relationship its proper place or separate on our own, He Himself will start the process for it to break. The very bonds of the relationship will start to crumble and many times, it isn’t pleasant.

That’s what happened to King Solomon; “...because you have done this [you entered a marriage covenant you weren’t supposed to], and have not kept MY covenant ...I will surely tear the kingdom away from you...” (1Kings 11:11). God, in revealing the steadfastness of His heart, used King Solomon as an example to the future generations.

A Nation: A Reflection of Marriages

Why does God command us not to marry outside of His family, and specifically, for us to ask Him to choose our mate for us? What is behind satan’s strategy in hurrying us to marry without first seeking God and waiting for the mate that He is so delightfully preparing for us?

God is the one who created the earth and the fullness thereof. The whole world and all of creation was given to the first man, Adam to rule over. Adam gave it over to satan and now both righteousness and evil cohabitate in the same world (See Luke 4:6, Proverbs 18:21). Because of this there must be a separation between the two natures. Therefore, we must choose between the nature of “Life,” and the nature of “Death” (See Deuteronomy 30:19).

Satan’s strategy for the husband or wife is to have an unrighteous spouse, thereby mixing the godly with the ungodly and producing unrighteous children. Because the children are our future leaders, they will lead the people away from God and from doing right. “For righteous exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). Moreover, when a fair portion of that generation of children lives out their corruption and unrighteous, the future of the nation is in jeopardy. Therefore in this case, separation and divorce is a method to save.

When the desire to marry comes from our own selfish heart, for our own selfish purpose, and for our own selfish gratification, you can be assured that disaster is looming in the air. “Did not Solomon, King of Israel, sin by these things? Yet among many nations there was no king like him, who was beloved of his God; and God made him King over all Israel. Nevertheless, pagan women caused even him to sin” (Nehemiah 13:26). This caused Solomon’s whole nation to crumble, because families make up a nation.

Therefore, when separating or divorce comes from God’s heart through man, it’s to save people. That is whether the marriage went bad, or was bad from the beginning. God is doing the separating to have a righteous people, for “righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”

God Hates Divorce? Not True! God does not desire His people to be in a bad or wrong marriage. Jun 23, 2008 8:58 pm

God Hates Divorce? Not True!
It's a half-truth that "God hates ALL divorce.

God Himself calls for divorces. God does not desire His people to be in a bad or wrong marriage. If the couple will do what is necessary to have a godly marriage and friendship, great! Otherwise, divorce and remarriage is a way to get a new start.

Have you ever heard anyone say, “God hates marriage”? Of course not! Have you ever heard anyone say, “God hates divorce”? Sure we have, especially when they are not the ones faced with that dilemma. The phrase, “God hates divorce” has been used against married couples as a blanket answer to cover all types of marriage problems. As we will find out from God’s Word, that is just not true. Neither is it true that “God hates marriage.” On the contrary, God is the one who instituted marriage between a man and a woman. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24).

Even though God instituted marriage, He does not approve of ALL marriages. This can be clearly seen in the lives of the people of Israel written in Ezra, chapter 9 and 10, and Deuteronomy 7:15. In Ezra, God disapproved of the marriages and His judgment was on them until they corrected the situation by divorcing their spouses and even separating from their children that were born from those marriages. In Deuteronomy, God said, “NOR SHALL YOU MAKE MARRIAGES WITH THEM. For they will turn your sons away from following Me” (Deuteronomy 7:3,4). In this situation, God hated these kind of marriages!

When people say, “God hates divorce” as quoted from Malachi 2:16, normally that has been taught to mean that divorce is not allowed AT ALL. We shall see that this is only a half-truth.
In Jeremiah the eighth chapter, Jeremiah mourns over the inhabitants of Jerusalem. The Lord gave them a warning through the prophet in verses 4-22. In verse 5, it says that they were “...in a perpetual backsliding [condition]” and in verse 9 that “...they have rejected the Word of the Lord.” Our wrong motives and attitudes will always reject “the Word of the Lord.”

Because their motives and attitudes toward God and people were so bad, God said in verse 10, “Therefore I WILL GIVE THEIR WIVES TO OTHERS, AND THEIR FIELDS TO THOSE WHO WILL INHERIT THEM.” Notice God’s attitude concerning the marriage. The marriage itself was not first priority, but second. God did not save the marriage, but broke it up because of their continual disobedience. There is a curse that actually comes upon the marriage relationship because of continual disobedience to God (See Deuteronomy 28:30).

Which "Divorce" Does God Hate? Does God Really "Hate Divorce"? Jun 23, 2008 8:54 pm
64 Views
Remarriage or to remarry after divorce is the will of God! When God said, "I hate PUTTING AWAY," He NEVER meant divorce, but to SEPARATE. Meaning, divorce was good when needed. God never hated divorce, it was "something" else He hated.

To Which Situation Did God Say, "I Hate Putting Away (Divorce)?"

We have heard this Scripture: “the Lord God of Israel says that HE HATES DIVORCE” (Malachi 2:16). This is almost always quoted as if God hates all divorces in general. But that’s just not true. We have previously read from the Bible books of Ezra, Nehemiah, Jeremiah, Deuteronomy and 1Corinthians that God is not against divorce. Then why all the confusion concerning why God said that “He hates divorce?” The reason for the confusion is because there are TWO “kinds” of marriages and TWO “divorces” being mentioned in the Malachi 2:11-16 passage.

The “divorces” were not official divorces; they didn’t need to be. They were already previously married and “unofficially” married again. The Hebrew word shalach means “putting away”― a separation, as correctly translated in most Bibles. However, the King James and a number of newer versions have incorrectly translated shalach as to mean: divorce. It never meant divorce and it doesn’t mean divorce. The word was most likely translated as “divorce” to fit what was taught in the church. Shalach is just a common word used throughout the Old Testament which means to: go, separate or to send. That’s it!

So why did God angrily say that He “…hated putting away [a separation]?” “…Because you have not kept My ways [concerning marriage, divorce and remarriage] but have SHOWN PARTIALITY IN THE LAW” (Malachi 2:9). The Law specifically stated that when a man got a divorce from his wife that he was to write “…her a CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE, put it in her hand, AND [shalach] send her out [put her away]…” (Deuteronomy 24:1). God also commanded them not to marry anyone who did not serve him ― who served a foreign god (See Nehemiah 13:25-30).

Instead, men separated from their wives without ever giving them a Certificate of Divorce and then illegally married someone else. This is why the Lord said that they were still “their wife by covenant.” The marriage covenant had never been dissolved by the Divorce Certificate.

“The Lord’s holy institution which He loves...the Lord has been witness between you and the wife of your youth ...[and] SHE [STILL] IS YOUR COMPANION AND YOUR WIFE BY COVENANT. For the Lord God of Israel says that He hates divorce [shalach], [separating without a Certificate of Divorce].... He has [illegally] married the daughter of a foreign god. May the Lord cut off ...the man who does this being awake and aware” (Malachi 2:11,12a,14b,c,16a).

Because these men had remarried illegally ― separated from their wives without giving them a Certificate of Divorce, they were in adultery as Jesus stated: “Furthermore it has been said, “Whoever PUTS AWAY [separates from {apoluo}] his wife, LET HIM GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE. But I say to you that whoever PUTS AWAY [separates and remarries without being divorced from] his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery: and whoever marries a woman who is PUT AWAY [separated without being divorced {apoluo}] commits adultery” (Matthew 5:31-32). (The Lord never forgot about the Malachi incident when He came to earth to redeem lost man).

The Old Testament Hebrew word shalach and the New Testament Greek word apoluo are equivalent which will be discussed later.

Because these disobedient men still had “un-divorced” wives, the Lord did not command them to give their illegal wives a Certificate of Divorce, rather, they simply had to “separate, put them away, [shalach].” SO DID GOD HATE DIVORCE? NO! RATHER, GOD HATED THAT THE HUSBANDS WERE SEPARATING FROM THEIR WIVES WITHOUT GIVING THEM A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE WHICH WOULD ENABLE THEM TO GET REMARRIED. THIS IS WHAT GOD HATES!

The men of Israel were SEPARATING from their wives for self-gratifying reasons. God Himself was a “witness” at their original marriage ceremony which was still in effect. The marriage covenant was never dissolved by a Certificate of Divorce. The men remarried outside their own culture (race) and tribe. God considered the children they bore unholy because of the mixed marriages bringing curses into their families (See Ezra 9:1,2, Nehemiah 13:26-30).

Because of these unauthorized marriages, the Word of God came to Ezra and Nehemiah to have the men and women of Israel who had done this thing, to separate from their spouse and even from their children (See Ezra 9:1, 11-12, 10:3, Nehemiah 13:23-27). In this situation, God’s command was to “put them away, separate yourselves from them!” This was NOT the kind of marriage to which God was saying, “I hate divorce!” He was saying loudly, “Get out of these wrong marriages!”

DIVORCE IS A METHOD TO SEPARATE THE ONE, AND MAKE THEM INTO TWO just as a surgeon’s knife is used to separate the cancerous flesh from the healthy flesh. Both operations are good. Divorce can be used to kill a righteous marriage, just as a surgeon’s knife can be used to kill a healthy person.

BIBLICAL REPENTANCE IS NOT WORKS BUT RATHER A GIFT Jun 23, 2008 11:21 am

Repentance

Is repentance necessary for salvation? Some make salvation conditional on a complete turning away from sin which they claim is the meaning of repentance. This is far from the truth. Bible preachers proclaimed repentance. If faith is the same as repentance, this would make no sense. Those who follow the Bible will preach repentance and will require evidence thereof.

Repentance (metavnoia) is from two Greek words “after” (metav) and “thought (nou). An afterthought usually involves a change of mind. The context in which the word is used indicates the subject about which one must change [one’s] mind. In Hebrews 6:1, it is repentance from dead works.

In Acts 20:21, it is repentance concerning God.

In Acts 2:38,

Peter urged his listeners to change their minds about themselves and about who Christ is. The Bible does require repentance for salvation, but repentance does not mean to change all one’s conduct as a condition for receiving salvation. Repentance is a gift given by God to those he gives ears to hear. "If God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth." Acts 5:30, 31

Repentance is a work of God in the heart of the responsive sinner

Acts 11:18. “When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.”

People are able to reform their own lives to a certain degree. It is not uncommon for men who have gotten into trouble to come to their senses and to change their ways. Drunkards have stopped drinking and wife beaters have ceased from their violence while thieves have become honest citizens. This in itself is not biblical repentance.

Repentance is God-centered and eternity-centered. The man who merely reforms his ways has his eyes on the people he has offended and the consequences of his actions in his present life. The gospel, on the other hand, calls for “repentance toward God…” (Acts 20:21). The Prodigal Son’s repentance was demonstrated by his change of attitude toward God as well as toward his father. “I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I HAVE SINNED AGAINST HEAVEN, and before thee” (Luke 15:1.

The man who reforms his life looks upon his actions as problems and faults, but not as wicked sin against a holy God. Those who repent, on the other hand, confess that they have SINNED against God. They do not soft-peddle their sin.

This is why it is important that people be taught plainly what sin is from the Bible. To tell people that they have sinned is not enough, because the sinner does not naturally think of himself as truly evil. He will admit that he has faults, problems, weaknesses, but this is not the same as admitting that he is a sinner before God.

Biblical repentance as preached by John the Baptist, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the apostles, is A CHANGE OF MIND TOWARD GOD AND SIN THAT RESULTS IN A CHANGE OF LIFE. IT IS A SPIRIT-WROUGHT CHANGE OF MIND THAT LEADS TO A CHANGE OF LIFE. It is not a change of life. That would be a works salvation. It is a Spirit-wrought change of mind toward sin and God, such a dramatic change of mind that it changes one’s actions. It is a work of the Spirit in the heart.

Murder likely source of feet, say criminologist and ocean expert Jun 21, 2008 9:20 pm

Katie Mercer, The Province
Published: Friday, June 20, 2008

A criminology professor says the five feet that have washed ashore may be the handiwork of a macabre murderer.

There are only three plausible explanations for the source of the feet, says Rob Gordon, who teaches criminal psychology at Simon Fraser University.

- They belong to the five men who were killed in a plane crash off Quadra Island in February 2005. Only one body has been recovered.

RCMP remove box containing what was then believed to be a severed human foot from Tyee Spit in Campbell River on Wednesday.
Province file photo

-They're victims of a "body dump" from an organized-crime "cleanup crew."

- They're the work of a killer preying on young men.

Noting that more than nine men have gone missing from the Lower Mainland in the past two years, he says: "It may be connected to all these young adult males who have gone missing over a couple of years, who may be victims of a sexual predator who is killing and dumping them."

Gordon isn't the only one to think the severed feet may belong to murder victims, and dozens of theories have sprouted. International media have turned a spotlight on the mystery, with a Province reporter being asked to discuss the feet on BBC Radio's "Up All Night" and Fox News' "On the Record."

While an accident may be plausible, it wouldn't explain the number of feet that have been washing ashore, says Seattle oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer, who agrees something criminal may be going on.

"The number of feet are highly unusual," he says.

"I would expect a smattering of body parts -- an upper arm, a lower arm, a head, a leg. This is statistically extremely unlikely, which begs foul play."

While the feet could belong to accident victims, Ebbesmeyer says they would have to be from the area.

"Drifting objects could float into the Georgia Strait from up to 1,000 miles away, but objects usually wash up closest to where they were put into the water," says Ebbesmeyer.

"Whatever is happening there, wherever those bodies first entered the water was in the Strait of Georgia."
