I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil—this is the gift of God. (Ecc. 3:12-13)

It is my opinion that our happiness is from God and the friends he has blessed us with.

You guessed correctly! I have been spending time reading Ecclesiastes today.

Is it just our wheels that need balancing? Sep 29, 2006 9:31 am
Mood: contemplative, 203 Views
When we focus on relationships, getting rich, accumulating possessions, etc. we can become consumed. It is often all we think about. We can easily become out of balance. Proverbs is full of verses telling us not to eat or drink, etc. to excess. Solomon tells us:

The man who fears God will avoid all extremes {Ecc. 7:1-8}

This means we need to live our lives in balance.

How do we prioritize pleasure, buying, & power in our life? Sep 29, 2006 9:14 am
Mood: contemplative, 190 Views
We spend a lot of our lives wanting to have fun and be happy. Nothing wrong with having fun and being happy! We also want to feel good about ourselves and have people like and respect us. I know I have spent a lot of time doing things to get recognition and to like myself more. If I would just get that next promotion I knew that would get me the recognition I wanted and I would be happy. Well I got the promotions and the raises and had the power, but I still wanted more. I never found the happiness and contentment I sought.

According to Ecclesiastes even Solomon struggled for meaning in his life through pleasures (2:1-11), wisdom (2:12-16), work (2:17-23), riches (5:8-17), etc. and found that all of his efforts in these areas were meaningless. Like chasing after the wind. Listen to a little of what Solomon has to say about this:

Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owner except to feast his eyes on them? (6:10-11)

Possessions, power, money and position never brought me the joy and acceptance I wanted. It was through my relationship with God and friends that I finally began to experience joy, peace and contentment in my life. And it was by spending quality time with God and friends that healing came into my life.

What are some ways God works in our Lives? Sep 28, 2006 1:57 pm

God told Jeremiah to go down to the Potter's house and observe.

But the vessel that he was making of clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he remade it into another vessel, as it pleased the potter to make. Then the word of the LORD came to me saying, "Can I not, O house of Israel, deal with you as this potter does?" declares the LORD. "Behold, like the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel." (Jer, 18:6FF).

From this we learn that God is the Potter and we like Israel can be the clay in His hands. From wrong/bad choices I have made, I am often like a marred vessel. But when I submit to God and allow Him to do His work in my life, I can become clay in His hands. I often envision God gently picking me up in his Hands, working on both the inside and the outside to mold me exactly as He wants. It sometimes hurts when God is pushing and pulling, shaping and molding me. But, I need to submit to this because I know in the midst of the pain I experience while being shaped I will develop the character of His creation that can be used for His Glory. When I have taken on the shape He has in mind, He places me in the kiln to be fired. Trials, testing, etc. get the picture? It is no fun and there are many times that I want to escape. I cry out for the Potter to take me out, now! Help me! But the Potter knows if He takes me out too soon I will cool too fast and will crack. The Potter knows exactly what to do—I just need to wait upon Him and be pliable in His hands. At just the right time, when the process is completed, the Potter gently lifts me out. After all the pulling and shaping and the time spent in the furnace I am now ready for the next phase of my journey with my LORD.

How have you experienced God working in your Life?

How do I become content? Sep 28, 2006 9:50 am

Paul was beaten, ship wrecked, stoned, etc., and through all of his trials and tribulations he was able to live contently.

Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. (Phil 4:4-7)

The main thing we can do is to love God (see previous post). In addition we need to learn to live each day, one day at a time. Starting out each day in prayer and seeking (listening and discerning) what God has for us during the day. Each day we walk in His will for us for that Day, One day at a time. This is what faith is all about.

Sometimes this becomes difficult for us and we can even get burned out. When you are stressed or becoming burned out it is time to seek God andPrioritizethe activities in your daily life--maybe even eliminate some things. When things are not going as planned itmay be time to re-evaluate and modify plans. Examine your expectations and determine if they need to change. Does God want you to do something else? These are times we need to seek God, the council of wise Godly friends, read His Word and advice from our families. Sometimes what we are planning is consistent with God's will for us but the timing is just not right yet. Isaiah states that:

He gives strength to the weary, And to him who lacks might He increases power. Though youths grow weary and tired, And vigorous young men stumble badly, Yet those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary. (Isa. 40:29-31)

Wait upon the LORD and walk worthy in His Will, and like Paul, you will find contentment.

What has helped you to live contently?

Keys for living successful lives Sep 28, 2006 9:18 am

When asked which is the greatest commandment, Jesus begins with a quote from Deuteronomy (6:5):

YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' "This is the great and foremost commandment. "The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets." (Matt. 22:37-40)

All of the Ten Commandments are summarized in these two commands. Since we are created beings, I believe these to be more than commands. In my opinion, our LORD is essentially providing us an owner’s manual for how we should live. Each commandment can be broken down into principles that allow us to live contently, and in peace and harmony with others.

There are NINE principles involved and for the sake of brevity, they are only named. By actively loving God we can experience (1) His acceptance, (2) His forgiveness, and (3) His unconditional love for us. Our experiences in loving God allow us to begin the process of (4) accepting ourselves, (5) forgiving ourselves and (6) loving ourselves (all part of the Greatest commandment). During this process of learning to love God and ourselves we become more transparent and more easily (7) accept others, (eight) forgive others and (9) learn to love others. Describing how to implement each one of these principles into your life could be developed into a lot of posts.

Living the Greatest commandments takes time and commitment, but the results are worth the effort! Not only is this a key to living contently, it can also be a pathway for healing in our lives and relationships with others.

Any lessons learned or suggestions from BCers on how to forgive and love ourselves. etc.?

Is this lust or Is it Love? Sep 27, 2006 10:58 pm
Mood: thoughtful, 318 Views
A lot of us struggle with whether the relationship we are in will result in a good Christian marriage. Or are we just in lust? A couple of questions Christians can ask themselves to access the spiritual basis of their relationship are: (1) Because of this person do I have a desire to get closer to God? And (2) is the person you are involved with demonstrating a desire to get closer to God in their own life? If one or both are not getting any closer to God or demonstrating a desire to get closer, then the relationship is probably more lust centered than God centered.

...Blue Green algae forming randomly.

The Human Genome Project (2000) investigated how life began starting with Life today, which is opposite of the traditional approach Life Scientists have used. Scientists studied what is considered Life’s oldest form, Bacteria. There are many forms of bacteria and to function independently they require a minimum genome size of 1500-1900 gene products. Biophysicists have calculated the Probabilities shown below for Protein Genes to evolve.

NOTE: Scientists consider anything over 10**50 as impossible. 10**50 means 10 to the 50th power or 1 followed by 50 zeros.

250 gene Protein has 1 chance in 10**18,750 of Occurring

350 gene Protein has 1 chance in 10**26,250 of Occurring

500 gene Protein has 1 chance in 10**37,500 of Occurring

1500 gene Protein has 1 chance in 10**112,500 of Occurring

1900 gene Protein has 1 chance in 10**142,500 of Occurring

For Blue Green algae to form with 1900 gene products is much harder than finding ONE SPECIFIC ATOM, not just on Earth, but from thousands of Universes like ours. All of the odds makers in Vegas will agree that these proteins did not just evolve. You guessed it, they were created!

I do not have enough faith to believe in evolution!
