Big boys don't cry Apr 19, 2008 12:53 pm

Who chokes up at sappy movies? Who gets so swept away by excitement that they leap to their feet and hug complete strangers. Who falls apart when a relationship ends: The surprising answer: MEN. Granted, the film might be Saving Private Ryan; the exuberance let loose in hockey rinks, and the breakup their own idea. However, now research reveals that a man's emotional life is as complex and rich as a woman's but often remains a mystery to him--and to her.

Long considered a female trademark, men report feelings a often as women do and describe their experiences of emotion similarly. In an analysis of the emotional intelligence of 500,000 adults, men rated just as high in emotional awareness. In studies of married couples, husbands proved as attuned to their mates' stress levels as wives did--and just as capable of offering support.

But while both men and women sigh, cry, rejoice, rage, shout and pout, the sexes tend to process and express emotions differently. "Men are taught to squelch their feelings because they get in the way," says Guy Grenier, a clinical psychologist and marriage counselor in London, Ont. "Women are better at processing important emotions and are more likely to talk to other women about their problems. Men don't always know what to do with their emotions."

As a result, many men intellectualize and compartmentalize their feelings, and can have trouble empathizing--all of which can make them more remote. It's like growing a suit of armor--it's hard to get in and it's hard to get close." But if a man can free his emotions from that tough, protective shell, the payoff is worth it. Men who are able to work towards more meaningful emotional relationship--whether it's with friends or family--are going to be happier.

In 125 studies in various cultures, boys and men were consistently less accurate at interpreting unspoken messages in gestures, facial expressions and tone of voice. Men also react less intensely to emotions--and forget them faster.

Divorce is typically more devastating for men since it forces them into unexplored territory. It hits men like a ton of bricks. One man said, "It hit me like a ton of bricks, it was like a death, but worse." It also changed him. "Since my divorce, I've had a much more emotional life. It's made me more sensitive to how I feel and more upfront with people, I think I might even make a better husband if the right person comes along."

When my youngest daughter wanted permission to date, I sat her down and told her that if I give my permission, he'd better not try anything, because if he did, I would kill him. Now i did say that with tongue in cheek.....sort of.

So "the" night arrived. The young man (I use the term loosely) came to the door, very nervous I might add (I think my daughter told him what I had already said a bout his life). My ex and I invited him into the living room and had him sit down.

What I said to him went something like this, " Julie is very special to her mother and I. We have tried to raise her in a Godly manner. She is pure and clean, and if you EVER try anything with her, it WILL be the worst day of your life."
Needless to say, she and her husband were virgins when they married.

My oldest daughter?? Well "I pity the fool" (as Mr Mr T would say) that would ever try to do anything to her. She is tall and thin, but even I would be afraid to cross her.

It was by faith May 13, 2008 6:49 pm

By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king's anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible, By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel.

By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so they were drowned.
(Heb 11:24-29)

Of everything in this account for which Moses is praised, only the last one or perhaps two could be categorized as great achievement. Notice, Moses:
* abandoned the privileges of royalty
* accepted mistreatment
* identified himself with the downtrodden
* renounced temporary, sinful pleasures
* physically left Egypt and all its advantages
* exposed himself to the anger of a powerful king
* brought down plagues upon both Israel and Egypt
* crossed the Red Sea as on dry land

Moses did all these things by faith. When we focus on Moses as a man of great achievement, we miss the point. Great achievements did not make Moses a success. If they did, he would be an example only to that rare person among us who is called to be the Moses (or Joseph, or David) of this generation. It was FAITH that made Moses a success, and it is his faith that is an example to us all.

The first teddy bear May 1, 2008 7:36 pm

Teddy bears are named after U.S. President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt. The story began when the president refused to shoot a young bear while on a hunting trip. This incident appeared in a cartoon by Clifford K. Berryman, published in the Washington Post on November 16, 1902. Soon after, Morris Michtom, a New York shopkeeper, startd making stuffed bears and advertising them as "Teddy's Bears" with Roosevelt's permission.

At about the same time, Margarete Steiff, a German toymaker, started making fer first toy bears and exported them to the U.S. to meet the demand created by Teddy's Bears. In 1903, Steiff's factory produced 12,000 bears.

By 1907, the figure had risen to 974,000. Steiff teddy bears, with a distinctive tag on their ear, are still made and are sold internationally. Early examples are prized by collectors.

A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking

Experience is something you don't get until after you need it

For every action there is an equal and opposite criticism

He who hesitates is probably right

Never do card tricks with the group you play poker with

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view

The colder the X-ray table, the more of your body is required on it

The hardness of the butter is proportional to the softness of the bread

The severity of the itch is proportional to your reach

To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism, but to seal from many is research

To succeed in politics, it is often necessary to rise above your principles

Two wrongs are only the beginning

A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory

If you must choose between two evils, pick the one you have never tried

Plan to be spontaneous tomorrow

Always try to be modest -- and be proud of it

Hell hath no fury like the lawyer of a woman scorned

Bills travel through the mail twice the speed of cheques

99.9% of lawyers give the rest a bad name

Eagles may soar, but weasels never get sucked up into jet engines

It's hard to soar with eagles when you work with turkeys

42.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill & a laxative on the same night

There is a fine line between “hobby” and “mental illness”

Never lick a steak knife

Never be afraid to try something new. Remember a lone amateur built the ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic
