Was PETER rebuked to his face ??

Hiz4Ever

How many will say that JESUS rebuked Peter to his face?

"Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men."

EDIT:

First of all let me say, this was not a joke or a trick blog. I am earnestly seeking the truth in all things. When I first saw the KJV in Mark 8v33; I wondered if I was reading it as I was. I searched many scriptures to find the truth. I one day bought an Amplified Bible, and it, too, said what I thought it was saying in Mark; that Jesus was turned away from Peter, but still rebuking.

Another thing. This does in no wise mean to bring
harm, offense, or pride and arrogance against anyone. I was hoping that someone or many would have found what I did. When things like this kept coming up in my readings....it slowed me down and made me look deeper and harder at every word. Doing a word study is important as well. Each word has specific meaning, and that is why it is there. We read with a Western mentality a book written through Eastern culture.

I want to thank everyone who commented.

* * * *

Mark 8v32 KJV
And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.

Mark 8v33 KJV
But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, "Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men."

AMPLIFIED VERSION:

Matthew 16v23 But Jesus turned away from Peter and said unto him,......

Mark 8v33 But turning around [ His back to Peter ] and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, ......

The Amplified says that anything in the brackets [ ]; "contains justified clarifying words or comments not actually expressed in the immediate original text, as well as definitions of Hebrew and Greek names".

My Opinion:
I never could see it saying he was facing Peter. Jesus, being a Good Shepherd will not
beat the sheep or doing anything to frighten them. Jesus clearly addresses the rebuke to Satan. Peter's name is not mentioned in the context of the rebuke. Anytime I have rebuked Satan, I never
looked in the face of a person lest they think I am calling them Satan. I believe this has been the cause of multitudes of wounding in the Church.
Peter had just made the statement that Jesus is the Christ/Messiah. Does God receive that
as his confession with the mouth that Jesus is LORD? If so, then Satan cannot be in him, only around him. Jesus saw with the Prophetic eye, the spirit of Satan. Satan had been following Jesus since his baptism. Therefore, Satan, was there when Jesus was asking the question of whom do men say that I am. Satan, also, heard Jesus call Peter Blessed and giving him the keys to the kingdom of heaven and saying He would build His church upon the revelation Peter had.
Satan's ultimate agenda now is to destroy the kingdom and the church and steal back the keys.

How is it that Satan seems to know things about us? He is a spirit, but he can hear. He hears you speaking, your family and friends speaking, and even strangers. Even more, he hears what GOD is saying. He, also, sends out assignments to watch and take note of you.

If an enemy wants to conquer his foe, he will try to get information as to the plans or intent of his enemy. Why? so he can spoil those plans, or make a surprise attack . If you know someone is out to get you, you are on guard and watch all the time. If you don't suspect anyone wants to harm you, you aren't careful what you do or where you go, and even what you say.

Jesus was training the disciples to become Apostles. It says He looked on His disciples. We don't know for sure the distance that was between Him and the disciples, Him and Peter. We are reading in one dimentional, but we should be thinking in full dimention. The Word should proke us to think. Think outside of the BOX !! Not to get carried away of our flesh, but to ask questions of the LORD, when reading the Word. When you look at the WHOLE picture and setting of the verses surrounding a single verse, it can change things dramatically.
[b]This rebuke was face to face; Jesus to Peter
[b] This rebuke was not to the face of Peter?
[b] I don't know
[b] I don't care
[b] I'll be back after I check the WORD

The Word says Jesus turned towards Peter - so after double checking it first - it's #1 he rebuked Peter face to face.

How can we NOT praise Him - Marilyn

Well this story is also told in Mark. In verse 8:32 we see:

32And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him aside, and began to rebuke him.

33BThen he turned back and looked on his disciples, and rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

So it seems that they were off to the side and Jesus turned to face the rest of the disciples. I think more importantly than whether he was facing him was the fact that he issued such a strong rebuke. Of course He rebuked Peter! He was talking to Peter, no question. But Satan was speaking through Peter and was the source. Peter was focused on an Earthly agenda and denying the Promise of The Lord and the power of Jesus Christ our King and Savior. Look at the verse in context (the best way to examine a Bible verse) and there is much more shocking activity going on:

16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

16:22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.

16:23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

16:25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

So we see Peter rebuked Jesus! He was so focused on an Earthly agenda (survival) that he saw it fit to rebuke the Messiah. So needless to say, Peter had it coming. Now some may say that Peter was doing this because he cared about Jesus and did not want him to die. Maybe so, but Jesus rebuked Peter to let him know the urgency of the situation. it was BIGGER than Earthly human worries. Jesus was on a mission to save humanity and his death was a part of it.

This is why he repeatedly told his disciples in advance, so when it happened they would know it was his plan. And most importantly, he would come back on the third day via resurrection!! Praise The Father! He was giving a message of glory but Peter could only see through a glass darkly, and hear of death and suffering, which is what Satan wants for all of us. So he was rebuked.

But in Peter's defense, at this point in his life he was very emotional and reactionary (being human as we all are). he of course later became fully emboldened with The Holy Spirit and a great, great Apostle.

So perhaps Jesus did turn his back on Peter. But I think it's safe to say it was justified and out of love. Praise The Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Hi Precious Woman of God,

I looked up three different translations and it appears to me that the one verse Matthew 16:23, is divided in two parts...

First,I believe that Jesus spoke directly to satan while facing Peter because Peter was allowing satan to speak thru him.

Secondly, the Lord appears to be addressing Peter (the person)directly and showing him his error. Pointing out his faulty thinking and thru this Jesus was making known to him that he was giving entrance to satan into his thoughts.

MATTHEW 16:23-

NASB
But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's."
KJV
But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
NIV
Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."

Thank you for the post....always good thoughts when thinking about you my friend. God Bless, Maria

I can imagine he did, we must remember not to get too hung up on details the important thing is this was yet another chance for Christ to openly explain his mission, his purpose and who was sending /had sent him and also explain to them he was God's son not just a man of power and truth. I think Peter got the message and the experience helped him later.

Matthew 16 v 23 Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection

But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me. Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men."

Jesus rebuked Peter to his face, in front of the other disciples.

Sorry sister, the drumming fingers were me impatiently waiting for the answer.Foolish man that I am,I never checked the top of the post,I automatically thought you comments would come at the end.Sorry.

I like what you have sid and I tend to agree with it.The whole thing reminds me of an incident in my own life.
As a young man and a drug addict,on my 21st birthday my closest friend handed me a birthday present of drugs. He said to me,"I don`t care where we end up with these drugs.I don`t care if we die,as long as we don`t end up as Born Again Christians".
At the time I laughed at the thought of people like us being christians, but 6 months later I was on my knees.
Looking back I do not hear my friend speaking but satan, planting the thought into my drug filled head, that even if I`m going to die, don`t become a christian.
Well I was going to die and I did become a christian.Praise God.

Both satan and the LORD heard your words(prayer).

I am so glad the LORD won. HE won anyway at the cross.
Jesus died once for ALL man's(mankinds) souls. They
just have to believe and receive.

Jesus was speaking to Peter and yes HE did rebuke him, but HE was addressing both Peter and satan. In the same way HE tells satan to keep his hands off us, and if we are listening HE tells us when the enemy is seeking to use us.

Wise and persuasive words are not enough! Nor is just living a good life. If I am to truly live, I must now serve HIM with my life! ...and so... Gal 2:20

I believe DAKE's BIBLE tells of it
being a two-sided such conversation.
