There are scammers here, trying to take advantage of you!!!

For those of you that have been here for a while, please forgive my repetition, as I (and others) have posted these warnings before.

For those of you that have NOT been here very long, please pay attention. In the last 4 days, I have received emails from 7 different scammers. In the month of November alone, I have received over a dozen. I have reported them all for abuse, but many remain. Some common signs to look for:

1. Most are widowed, the most common story is that their wife died some years ago, in a car accident.
2. Most have Masters Degrees and work in Engineering, Construction, or Self-Employed.
3. Even though they have Masters Degrees, they cannot spell correctly, form complete sentences or paragraphs, do not capitalize the letter "i", and use language common to texting, and their punctuation is terrible.
4. Most say that they live in the U.S., but their speech suggests that they are foreign.
5. They will ask you to contact them on their private email or ask to accept them as friends so they can IM you, almost immediately. All that I have found use yahoo.
6. Most tell you that after viewing your profile, they find you to be beautiful, attractive, interesting, and include a great deal of flattery.
7. Most say how honesty and trust are so important to them and get offended/angry if you question them too much. After all, you're supposed to trust them completely.
8. Shortly after meeting you, they begin to talk of financial problems, getting robbed, or becoming very sick. Beware!
9. They will try to convince you of their sincerity and will fall in love with you, within a week or two. Run away, quickly!

These are only a few of the common qualities, many have refined their art of deception very well, and may be more difficult to spot. If you receive emails that reflect these qualities, hit the "Report Abuse" button, so Big Church can check them out. But, even that doesn't always work, as I have reported some, and they are still here.

Verify Everything!

Verify the city they live in, their jobs, their churches and Pastors names, their drivers licenses, phone numbers, addresses. Many say they are from the US, but on a job or something, in a country in Africa, (Ghana and Nigeria the most common) and I have found a few to be in the UK.

Please, please, if you have any doubts or suspicions, about anyone you have had contact with, go to scammeralert, on this site, (go to the top right of the page, to : "groups", then to "groups main", then type in "scammeralert" and search.) There is a great deal of good info there, along with testimonies from other members that have been scammed, and the screennames of some. I wish I had gone there when I first joined.

I am not allowed to mention specific names here, but if you will email me, I will give you the dozen or so, most recent ones. Many are the same person, with various screen names. One guy I found, started with one name, then I exposed him, he came back a month later, with a different screen name, and I exposed him again, and he came back several weeks ago, with still a different screen name! But, guess what? He used the exact same profile, and all the same pics! Not very smart, huh?

And, men, I have been told by other men on this site, that there are female scammers too. Most of the time, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

I am praying that this information is useful to someone, and that all of you will be very cautious.

May God bless and protect you!!

    Hi to you,
Thanks for the warning, I had not heard about scams on here but I am not surprised, they get everywhere. Can be hard to spot I guess and if you fall for it you get put on the MUG list which they pass around. Mind you, they wouldn't be able to get much from me, one of the good things about not having much! If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Hi Rev Steve!

Thank you for your kind words! I just felt it necessary to warn those who are vulnerable to their tactics. So many newbies here are hurting and lonely and may succumb to the scammers. If I can spare one victim, the warnings are worth the time.

THANK you! I wondered about some of them. The ones that stood out used so many love cliches all bunched together, like they had copied and pasted things they thought were good from many profiles.

...Oh, and I have zilch for cash, so I guess I'm safe too.

Hi Rick!

I find that they are always trying to perfect their craft, improve on the pattern, trying to deceive us.
Sometimes, they're deleted even before I get to read their email. So glad someone else is reporting them for abuse.

When you write them back you are giving them a confirmed e-mail address. Many times they are sending out e-mails "in the dark" so to speak.
Even the ones that have a link at the bottom where you can ask to be deleted from their mailings work that way. That particular entity may not send again but your e-mail then goes to a mailing list to be sold as a valid e-mail address.

If I ever write back I simply ask them if they have repented yet.

They don't write back. I think of this is a win win.

I am quite certain that that puts a thought into the mind of the 'employee' doing the writing that they have never been exposed to.

    Some scammers may be individuals.
However, my take on it is that the main guy has many doing the initial mailings in order to process the numbers. And that the responses are then turned over to the higher ups. I doubt if the 'employee' is as fully knowledgeable or guilty as the higher ups.

Terrie,
I get a lot of 20 - 29 year old woman contacting me, I just laugh, because I've stated in my profile I'm not looking for anything more then on line friends. You also know my past, so we can both laugh, ha ha ha ha!

I just ignore the ones that have very limited verbal skills. - Looking for love in all the wrong places - at least if they think I'm available, - and that gullible.

As you said, you report them and they just change their name and come back again and again and again. Gets rather frustrating. Hopefully someday BC will not make it not so easy to attempt to scam unfortunate, unsuspecting people.

Hi Debbie!

Welcome to bc and welcome to my blog!
I've been on several Christian sites and the scammers are everywhere. But the thing that makes bc different is the people here. I've been here for 1 1/2 years and met the most wonderful people in the blogs. They are genuine, encouraging, and sincere. That's what keeps me here. The scammers are just a mere annoyance, I get one or two a week. Now that you know what to look for, you won't fall prey to them. I pray you stay, you will be blessed by all the excellent people here.
God bless you!

I say a hearty amen to the above comments. My first scammer was a "missionary" from Ghana. It only took 2 emails for me to have my doubts.

My first assignment in the ministry included weeding out the cons in a church in Santa Ana (the con capital of the world). I very quickly had to develop skills and discernment.

With this "girl" (or guy), I played right along with "shim". I figured, why not have some fun with this. I really laid it on thickly, saying how much I was in love and wanted to spend the rest of my life with "shim". At first I replied out of a sense of courtesy. But now I'm much more cautious.
As dar as the American ladies I find it very difficult to know the difference and am more likely to believe the best unless I have good reason to believe otherwise. Lord help me to see.
Hi Young,

No, I don't mean to imply that those from a foreign country are all scammers, there are many I have grown to know and love, lol.

This post just speaks in generalities and I'm not sure about how the women scammers operate, as they only contact men. This is only from a female perspective.

It is good to think the best of everyone, until they prove otherwise, but please do so in caution. There are many here "roaming around like roaring lions, seeking who they may devour."
Thank you for your comment, it's nice to meet you!
May God give you discernment in every way!

Terri, I have printed out your suggestions for my future use and safety. thank you SO much.
Hi there!

It is my pleasure, I think that's why God allowed me to be scammed for 6 months, is so that I could warn others. However, my scammer didn't steal my money, he never asked for a cent, as a matter of fact, he sent me many gifts, roses several times, Teddy Bears, etc. He stole my heart. And, I verified his passport, his job, and the hotel he was staying in Ghana, Africa. If my testimony and warnings can save just one other woman from going through what I went through, then it was worth it.
God's protection my friend,

i definitely agree that it's important to be aware of what's going on and how to spot a scammer and what to do - and not to do!

you were scammed, maybe not in the sense of this blog post. i guess there are lots of reasons to "court" someone... because it feels good would be a primary reason. but, i do think something happened and the person wasn't willing or able to tell you about it. i can think of three other people right off hand that this has happened to, where the relationship was going along fine and then it just abruptly ended. the major reasons (when one has been able to find out) are a new relationship or fear of going to the next step.

i don't know if anyone has investigated how often this happens or how people deal with it to recover, but this has got to be a hugely painful shock and process. total absence of that nature is close to a death loss... probably much more confusing.

Hi Shar,
Thank you so much for your comment and you're right, there are exceptions to every rule. I just tried to list common characteristics found in these scammers. Yes, my scammer was different, in that he wasn't looking for money, but I'd rather lose money than to have my heart torn to shreds. I did contact the police in Glasgow, after he emailed me his itinerary to return home. After he went home from Ghana, he gave me his home address and phone number. After not hearing from him, I gave the police his info and they called me back and told me it was fake. I figure he was married and just using me for companionship while out of the country.
Yes, thank God He has healed my heart, and in experiencing this situation, I've been able to warn others, in hopes they will not have to go through what I did. So, He turned it all around and made it for my good and the good of others, as I have received dozens of emails from new members, appreciating the info. We serve an awesome God!
Thank you for your kind wishes, God bless you!

Hi beachgirl,
Please be very cautious, don't give out personal info or go to their private email or IM. There are so many of them here, I get emails almost daily. If anyone emails you giving their personal info, hit the "Report Abuse" button. Pay close attention to their manner of speech, poor spelling and punctuation, and not capitalizing proper nouns. Notice that most have Masters Degrees, work in Engineering or construction, and are usually widowed.

    Hi,
It seems to me that 'tis the season for scammers to come out to play' ....
I'm very aware of what they do now (learnt the hard way though)... wish this had been around back then, but yesterday I received a very typical scammers email and what seems to be more interesting now is the photos they are using which seem to be of real people (not models) in their homes (how they have done this is anyone's guess).
So yesterday I reported this guy for abuse and today he's gone... as have all those I've reported, but there does seem to be a new rush on at this time of year.

The great thing is that our God is our vindicator and if we remain vigilant here and just report these people we can remain safe.

Thank you Terrie for this blog and I direct any new members that I meet to either here or the group to give them the information needed.
God bless you girl, - I can say that 'cause you're younger than me..
    Kaye
Hi Kaye,

I learned the hard way too, although mine was not like the typical scammers here. For 6 months, this guy poured his time into me, 4 hours every day, on IM chatting, love letters every day, texts by the dozens, sent me flowers twice and a Build a Bear. He was so loving and caring, I've never experienced that before. Then, all of a sudden, he was gone. No warning, no explanation, just never heard another word. It broke my heart. So, I have made it my personal mission to expose all liars and deceivers, in hopes that others do not have to experience what I did.
I know what you mean about this being the season for them, I got 2 mails yesterday, and at least one every day for the last week or so, but like you, I report them.
Thank you for reading and for warning others, I declare that this place only be for the glory of God, in Jesus Name, Amen.
God's blessings to you also, my friend!

Good that you didn't let the behavior of some, keep you from the blessings of many. I'll be agreeing with you for safety and protection.
Blessings in the New Year!
God will be GREAT, in 2008!

I appreciate all the messages....I let my membership expire , because of the female scammers from China. They needed money for medical bills. After first week, they know I'm " The one". The other needed money to furnish her new apartment, so it would look nice when I visit. Unbelievable, God help us all.... I recently renewed membership because I did meet many sincere souls @ BC. I will remain cautious and pray for guidance. Blessings to all in the New Year.

Terrie, thanks so much for this post. I,too, seem to get all or 90 percent scammers. I got one today that had a profile that was half and half. One part seemed legitimate and the other wasn't. Then, of course, there are the pictures they get from no telling where. I don't respond to any of these, but I didn't know I could just report them. Appreciate you.

Hi Nancy,
Please be careful here, there are so many. I don't know why, unless they think Christian women are an easy mark, maybe we are?
God bless you, have a blessed New Year!

    Hi!
I have been a member on BC now for a year, and I can't even start to tell you how many times I have received winks, emails from these scammers!! It's like its all I get lol. I actually posted a Note on my profile to the scammers, and since then its settled down. I just wanted to add to, that these men also claim to have parents who were killed when they were young, or their wife died in childbirth but don't mention if they have a child!!!! The biggest give a way is that they can't spell! For having a masters degree, don't you think they would know how to spell, let alone compose proper sentences lol. I pray that all of us women and men be careful on this site, and be still to hear the Lord's voice as he guides us through our journey of what we are seeking from this site. Merry Christmas to all of you!!!
Hi Mitchener,

Thank you so much for your comment and insight. That's an excellent idea, putting a note to the scammers on your profile.
I am in agreement with your prayers for safety and protection for all bc members, I pray it every day.
Thanks for the valuable info, and Merry Christmas to you also,
Terrie

Another thing to beware of, is they automatically give you their IM (Yahoo or other)name and ask that you IM them.

Hi Gracious,
Yes, I had 3 just today, giving me their private email and asking me to IM, and 1 on Thursday, 2 on Wednesday, and 1 on Tuesday. I reported all of them. Thank you for the info.
Stay blessed,
Terrie

Hi ms Thingerella,
I can also spot them easily, now, but when I first joined, in May, it was my first experience with an internet dating site, and I was very naive, what an education it has been.
Praying for your happy ending,
Terrie

Thank you for the tip about the groups scammeralert...i had never heard of it...and i have been on bc for a year now...

There are some ppl going through a legitimate hard time however, and not trying to scamm anyone..only asking for prayer for the relief of the burdens that are so great..

Be blessed..

racefan4 replies on 11/24/2007 4:00 pm:
Hi pawspal,
I agree with you, the majority of people here are genuine and sincere. You can easily tell they are real, but the scammers focus on the hurting and the vulnerable, the broken and the heavy-laden become their targets.
That really makes me angry.
I'm praying for you pawspal,
Terrie

You have totally right,, there is many and specially from africa, russia. In the end they want money to airtickets, clothes, passports, and they are scilled to use even the bible. They have a tounge of lyings.
Some say they are women, but they are men and steal picture that is not theself... Always ask to show themself on webcamera several times and ask to see the whole body and not only the face..
And always follow the regulations and the law and the EMBASSY to get WISA. Don't listen to them that they have their own agents, and ways to get WISA and tickets.. Be aware of these wolfes in sheepclothes..

Hi bluemoon,
Thank you for the info, there are many, roaming around here, like roaring lions, seeking whom they may devour. If I could save just one person the heartache, it would all be worth it.
Praying for your blessings,
Terrie
