 Thursdays in Oz for many is pay day, and also late night shopping (merchants know how to milk it straight away). Not so in the States, shops are open in many places 24/7, so I got no answer except that everyone is conserving their energy for Friday night and beyond so's they can party on through the weekend.
Judgement Day will be interesting.
