What's In YOUR Past?

10/20/2009 5:46 am
The ongoing saga of certain member's past history has caused me to wonder, "What would BigChurch members think if they knew of my past?" I've done many things in my past that I'm not proud of, things that I'm ashamed of, and some actions that only God and I know of. I can't even imagine the blog headlines that could reveal some of my deepest, darkest exploits of drug usage, promiscuity, and yes, even criminal activities.

But, it begs the question, Who among us does NOT have a past? Are there any here that haven't done things they regret? How would each of us feel if our most intimate secrets were exposed to the world? Not that anyone needs to be defended, but think about it, doesn't the shed blood of Jesus cover ALL sin? If we have truly repented of our sin, and turned away from our past, letting go of what lies behind, isn't the sacrifices that Jesus made enough to make us righteous?

Before I was saved, I too judged people based on their past performance, but what I have learned in my many years of ministry is that the most passionate, zealous Christians are those that come from horrible backgrounds. Because they have been forgiven of so much, they are more keenly aware of how precious the gift of redemption is and so very grateful for it. They also readily forgive because they've been readily forgiven. Personally, I'm so thankful for God's perfect plan of reconciling the sin of the world, with the life of His only begotten Son. I feel so blessed each day that all of the ugliness and shame of my past is covered by His blood. I will praise His Name forever for making me a new creature, with ALL of the old things passed away and ALL things becoming brand new. Thank God for His mercy extended to each of us. Hallelujah to the Lamb!

Now, I'm NOT saying that we shouldn't exercise caution with those we're in relationship with. As a victim of crime and abuse, I am careful of letting others into my life, but I am no longer judgmental, critical, and condemning, simply based on a person's past. Jesus said we will know them by their fruit and the fruit of a person's life is what I look for in determining their sincerity. Certainly, the life of Paul is the perfect example of how the love and forgiveness of Jesus can change a heart.

So, I ask you today, what's in YOUR past?

I went through a phase in my life where I became discouraged by judgmentalism from both Christian and non-Christian alike. I began to question whether there was a difference between the two, until I realized that Christians are human and subject to falling short of the glory of God.

This is a very important post as I have a past. Thank you for offering the freedom and safety for others to share and identify, which offers hope!

those that have been forgiven much have become changed

Hi Thomas!

I have read of your past and can only say that God has transformed you also, as He continues to do in you and Robin's life. It's all those changes He's using in bringing you both to where He wants you to be.
Thank you for the warm wishes and all of your prayers. I see that our prayers for you & R are being answered. Hallelujah! Praise His Name!

Well, since was raised by strict parent and grandparents that I didn't want to disappoint... I really haven't done a whole lot of wild things.

Guess the wildest was getting married and going to PA a few times.

Maybe going to a biker church and never been on a bike before in my life.... No tattooes either....LOL

Now ready to get out and try the dating thing all over again and hope to be more wise and discerning in the event it is needed...

Hi Paws!

So good to see your smiling face!
Even if you don't realize it, you've come so far from where you used to be, God has caused you to grow by leaps and bounds through all the difficulties. Perhaps it's all been preparation to give you more wisdom and discernment, as it probably will be needed, lol.
God bless you girlfriend!

I was thinking again about this discussion this afternoon and something came to my mind.I heard the testimony of David Berkowitz, the Son of Sam killer earlier this year on Focus on the Family and it just blessed me to see how God transformed the man who had killed and harmed so many lives into a powerful servant of the Lord Most High. He has a web site where you can hear his story and read about his ministry he now has in prison. I think of Carla Faye Tucker, another person God delivered and transformed. And I think of Paul the Apostle, who in another part of his life as Saul too was anything but the man he later became. We do not have the vision to look into anothers soul and see the outcome, only God can do that.. He is the potter, we are the clay and everyone of us is unique and yet useful for Him to fill and use as He pleases. God Bless
Hi Diane!

Thank you for listing those examples! There are thousands that give their testimony of transformation and God's mercy and grace. You're right, no one can see the heart of another, only God can. And He has made a perfect plan for each of us, if we choose to accept it.
His Will be done, Amen!

Hi Rhonda!

There's no way God would allow me to judge someone according to their past, every woman that comes through the doors of my ministry, has one, some worse than others. And, it's been amazing to watch how the blood of Jesus has transformed their lives, given them beauty for their ashes, and a testimony of His amazing grace.
Thank you for your kind words, it's good to be back. God bless you my friend!

People need to share personal information as they feel comfortable with the person they're sharing with. Here on the net, I've seen people openly share about things that they would likely hesitate to share with certain people on a personal level. I believe we all have enemies and those that wish to cause harm. That's why it's so important we guard our reputations. I frequently remind people we are in public forum. Even confession and forgiven sins needs to be a discretion. I don't believe in bearing all, yet there are professional pastors that do just that, and I trust it's to create a credibility for their statements. More power to them. We need to choose care.
Hi longing!

I agree, we need to err on the side of caution, as there are many out to harm us. However, I have learned that I can't always judge a book by its cover. I personally know many of the women in my ministry that have come from very dark pasts, that the blood of Jesus has both forgiven and renewed. Today, their testimonies attest to His powerful saving grace, myself included.
People should disclose, only as they are led to, and God has led me to share many times in a public forum, if for no other reason, to give Jesus all the glory!
God bless you!

Hi Diane!

Thank you for your agreement! I too am grateful not to be known for my past, but rather for what Jesus has done and continues to do in my life.
It's my goal to have people see Him in me and not my previous performance. Yes, I'm praising Him too, through Him, we ARE free! Hallelujah!

Hey girlfriend!

It's such a shame that church people are unable to forgive someone of their past, after all, they were forgiven of theirs. How sad! Testimonies like your friend are so powerful in displaying the saving grace of Jesus. If He can turn her life around, what could He do for others? Hallelujah! One sin is no different than another, He can forgive them all, Amen!

Very good words. Practical and sound. How many times have we sat under the anointing and the Lord speaking to us through our leaders, or through a testimony and we are brought face to face with a similar event or bondage in our past? How many of you have been falsely accused of something you haven't done, and yet received a rebuke, or worse, from it?

God knows what He is doing. He uses my conviction to show me my true brethren from the false. He is doing a great many things through this conviction in my past.

But I stand before my King a free man and bound to Him through His Spirit. I am no longer in bondage. There are some things I just will not do! Thank you, Lord. It is not my life anymore.
Hi Jeremiah!

You're right, God DOES know what He is doing and I have discovered that nothing is wasted with Him. He uses every circumstance for our good, even the most ugly and certainly the unfair. Whom the Son sets free is free indeed!

Amen Terri! There's another post up too like this, I think. Can't remember who wrote it, but going to find it next.

In my defense for not saying anything....... My dad was a pedophile, (I escaped to my mom's in time for me, but am scarred from what I knew happened to my little step sister.) I was so shocked at all this on here I didn't know what to do. I didn't read much of it because it brought up old wounds. Literaly makes me sick. I forgave my dad, and he accepted Christ 2 yrs before he died, when I prayed with him. The ton of unforgiveness lifted off of me and the Holy Spirit filled me and I think my dad too. He was in a nursing home for 8 yrs. That was what had to happen before he died I believe.

This all hit home for me, and I did not want to get involved. But that is wrong too. As soon as I saw your post I knew it was the right way to be about this whole deal. And I feel bad for not speaking up.

I thought, and T said too, we don't know, nor can we know what anyone really did, or did not do. Makes no sense to try. I said, only two ppl know. He agreed. Actualy, I think we both said that last statement at the same time. After that I haven't read anymore about it.

I hope all the fighting will stop. I am mostly on fb anymore. T has no time anymore for either place. Hopefully soon he can sit a few min.s with the new laptop. If he can get it away from me lol. Thanks for addressing this. I feel better now. Of course that's what's importamt . Blessings to you both! R and T
Hi Robin!

So glad you've shared and that you're feeling better now! Sometimes, it's difficult to completely escape our past, there are times it has a life of it's own and rears its ugly head. But when we've laid it at the foot of the cross, the blood of Jesus covers it and it has no power over us anymore. What your father did was horrible, but when he accepted the sacrifices Jesus made that day, he became a new creature and it was forgiven. It's good that you've forgiven him too. Rock on my friend! All my love to you and T!
