Does God REALLY Promise Not To Allow More Than We Can Bear?

11/23/2008 4:44 am
Yesterday, my spiritual daughter called to ask where the scripture could be found that promises God will not allow more to come on us, than we can bear. She has a friend and co-worker, going through a difficult time and wanted to give her comfort and strength to help her deal with her hopelessness. In finding it for her, I was reminded of how powerful a truth it is.

"No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it."
I Corinthians 10:13

What an amazing reassurance it is to know this! If we belong to Him, God will not allow any difficulty to come into our lives that we are not capable of bearing. So, anything that comes our way, anything that tempts us, any tragedy that befalls us—we ARE capable of overcoming it and achieving spiritual victory. I can remember many times when I felt very close to not achieving that victory, so that doesn't mean it will always be easy. Quite the contrary—the fact that we may need a "way of escape" indicates that God sometimes allows difficult trials to come into our lives. We may not believe that we can overcome it, we may doubt our own strength to prevail, and we may even fail in the temptation. That doesn't mean, though, that we aren't capable of overcoming that particular temptation. Whether it's a temptation to sin or a temptation to doubt God, God promises that we will be able to overcome it.

But what does it mean to "overcome"?? It means the trials do not overcome our faith OR our position as children of God, and we come through the trials intact in our faith. Our eternal destiny is not in danger because "we are kept by the Holy Spirit, who was given to us as a down payment on our salvation (2 Corinthians 2:21-22). No trial can overcome that because it is of God. Therefore, the child of God will stand firm through the trials and come out on the other side still in God’s hand. This is proof that our salvation is real and our reward in heaven awaits us. James 1:12 assures us, "Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him."

Be encouraged in God's Word and never forget this powerful truth! Because life has a way of dealing to each of us, death and grief, times of despair and hopelessness, and powerful temptations. When you're in those times, and we ALL will be, sooner or later, KNOW that you KNOW that in Him, you CAN OVERCOME!!!

Praise Him today for every victory! Hallelujah!

Hi Susan!

I agree that often God pushes it right to the limit, with what we are able to bear, but the good news is, we're still here, and in the midst of tribulations, He is with us and causes us to come out on the other side stronger and more faithful.
Know that I'll be praying my friend!

    Hi Terrie,
If it were not true what is written in your post, I'm pretty sure I would not even be here. Now I don't mean taking my life, but ratherI mean in the sense of being with the Lord. That I am here is proof enough.
    Good Word.
Hi Jeffrey!

Amen! I agree! That you are here is proof enough. Although, many times I have felt that God pushes it right up to the limit, I, too am still here. More evidence of His mercy and lovingkindness! Hallelujah!
