Scandalous!!!

Since returning from western China which is historically Muslim I've been wearing capris to purposefully 'expose' my ankles. It's too cool to wear shorts in NC right now. I had three weeks of wearing long sleeves & long pants in even the hottest weather to avoid ridicule, rocks and harassment.

I just want to enjoy knee & elbow freedom!

Wow I have never heard of such a thing. Now I am EXTREMELY curious and I am going to do some research. You had to wear long pants to avoid ridicule, rocks and harassment... my goodness, that is horrible... can you show your feet?

Lillies--I was in Morocco in 2002 and had to do the same thing--because of honoring the muslim religion--even though we were guests in the country we felt it best to do that--but it got very hot in long pants and long sleeved shirts lol

I didn't show my feet. I was treated very well. I did not risk loosing acceptance by showing more than hands or face!

Btw, didn't you know that spelling is easier for non-mother tongue persons than pronunciation itself?

I am from south africa, lived in uk for 9 years...but as for moslem countries, i think i'll give it a miss. when i passed by doha airport on my way to za from uk one year, i spoke,as would be the norm for me, in english to the guy at the info section of aiport, he and his colleague switched to their language and assumed cause of my looks (i'm mixed race) that i'm indian or something. the one walked away with an annoyed air as if i was pretending not to understand him!!! i thought oh u ignorant insolent pig what are you muttering! then the handsome one helped me and it made it all seem better somehow, he was ever so sweet, i meant to stick him in my suitcase but i thought his mum might miss him!
but if someone was to tell me to dress how THEY want me to dress, i'd probably blow a gasket, sparks would fly, volcanoes would erupt and a tsunami would sweep through where my anger was inspired. my own mum could never get it right when i was only a few years young, why should i now in my adult years, have myself dictated to by someone else's beliefs, its ludicrous.
But hey, different strokes for different folks

I don't remember where exactly, but once I saw a documentary about a terrible custom of using extremely tight shoes on females. They were somehow supposed to be more attractive with smaller feet! They were completely deformed! Just think how much it must have hurt!!

My children are mixed race. They got tired of answering questions of where they were from when we lived in China. They'd sometimes answer, "Mars!"

I don't mind too much adjusting my wardrobe. It's like taking your shoes off in a Japanese home - it's their custom. But if someone came to MY home & told me how to dress, well, they've got another thing comin'!!!

That was China but I forget which dynasty. I think the Manchus came in from the north and were thought of as big footed. Gruesome practice, I say...

Jan, Istanbul was amazing! Such a vibrant city, The churches were incredible, such history. The downside being the poverty, it seems so wrong that in a place of such wealth, there are children falling asleep on the pavement, shining shoes for a living, as young as 4 or 5 years old.

I savoured fresh fish, fried on boats in the harbour, I didn't partake of the water, sold from cups, chained to a large urn, the cups were shared .....gulp!

The people there were friendly and hospitable, but it's not a good place to be on your own, I went with a friend.

I visited the Blue mosque, had to wear a head covering...I watched the people ritually washing, and praying...it was a new experience for me. I also visited Topkapi Palace...the palace of the Sultan, decorated with beautiful tiles, this is where the concubines lived watched over by eunochs. The guide was a muslim, very well educated man and he brought history to life for us. I wasn't a christian back then, this was 21 years ago. I also visited Troy and Ephesus and Canakale, where there were war graves. Turkey is a very beautiful place, such contrasts in scenery.

Really? I didn't notice when I was there in 1998. Of course I was there in December when it was cold enough to be covered up for warmth without considering modesty. Interesting. When were you there?? Do you travel there often?

I think it's mainly in the temple areas. We had to wear long sleeves and skirts.

If you're a really good Jewish woman, you cover your hair with a scarf. I did that and the respect level was nice.

I went a lot of years ago during the Feast of Booths..and yes, much warmer. A lot less coverage around the shores.

No, I haven't been back for a while due to finances. Education first.

India's the same way as China. My former fiance was very upset one day here in the U.S. when I wore a sleeveless short set. He was so embarassed that we went back home.

I've really not worn shorts since. ...But mainly because I don't like to shave more than to my knees. TMI!!

That's right - there were requirements for visiting the Wailing Wall. I had forgotten about that. I never went to the Dome of the Rock.

[ TMI but totally understandable! ]
