What is the Most Venomous Spider in the World?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It 's an age old question and I'm sure you'd like an answer, well here goes:

This is a rather difficult question to answer as there are actually a number of very venomous spiders in the world, all of which have caused human deaths (in some cases the reported cases are anecdotal rather than scientifically recorded).

Of those, the Black Widow Spider (Lactrodectus mactans) of North America is the most well known of the so-called deadly spiders. Other members of the Lactrodectus family are found throughout many temperate parts of the world, such as Australia where it is known as the Red Back spider and New Zealand where it is known as the Katipo spider.

The Sydney funnel spider (Atrax robustus) of Australia is often quoted as being the spider with the most dangerous venom.

On the other hand; according to the Guinness Book of Records the world’s most venomous spiders is the Brazilian wandering spider (Phoneutria nigriventer).

This spider is believed to have the most active neurotoxic venom of any living spider. Its venom is so potent that only 0.006mg (0.00000021oz) is sufficient to kill a mouse.

I wish I knew how to put up a picture of it so you could see how creepy and scarry they really are! Can anyone do that on a comment here for me??? Well the black widow venom is 15 times more powerful than that of the diamond back rattle snake, and we know how deadly and dangerious they are! The reason there are not more deaths from the widow bite is due only to the fact that they don't inject enough venom in their bites otherwise you'd be instant toast!!! and you'd go from looking like those two fellas on the left to this one on the right very quickly . I hate these spiders and can find one if I needed to by just going out to the garage and looking in, around, or under all the stuff stored out there.

You can spot a Black Widow web quite easy coz theres no beauty or symetrical design to them at all they look like were put up when druk or something with straight strans of silk going this way and that in a very small paramenter. I see the webs aaaaaaaaaal over my mail route just outside the cracks in the cinder brick walls where the little bitcccccccccccc...err bitty hides outs!!! I hate them and have a phobia with them and it bums me out that in colder weather they will often times go in doors for the warmth like the house!

Once when my sons were 5 and 10 years old we lived in a older house where the entrance to the garage was through my sons bedroom. We had the clothes dryer out there and had one of the single bulbs lights in the middle of the garage that lit it up but not very well so there were a lot of showdows when it was turned on. Well one night I went out there to put some cloths into the dryer and bent down to open the door to it when something caught my eye only inches from my face and I remember thinking what the heck is that and focused in on it to see to see the biggest Black Widow dangling off a single strand of silk right in front of the dryer door and maybe 2 or 3 inches from my face. I must have jumped backwards 100 feet or so it seemed and ran for dear life out of there. Man did that ever freak me out and give me the willie jillies and was rubbing my hands all over my body very stengisly just in case she had a friend nearby. Well I knew what had to be done! She had be killed and killed very quickly before she could get away and hide out somewhere in the garage where I knew her friends were already at but at least I didn't know as an absolute eye wittness fact that they were hiding out there!!!

Well being the man of the house I did what any other fearless hunter manly man would do and went to my oldest son Chris who was about 10 years old then and showed him a $20.00 bill and said it was his if he would only go out there and kill it by smaking two shoes together with it in between them He refused and sai "no way I'm afraid of them too" Justin who was only 5 said he'd do it and I thought about it for a minute or two but decide he might be a bit to young for such a dangerious mission So i finaly went out and she was still there and put the shoes on each sid of her as hung in space from the garage ceeling and what seemed like an eternity, I was thinking don't freak out and miss and pull that little bitccccccc errrrr bitty into you Well I didn't and smacked her good sending her right where all Black Widows belong and that is with God Only good Black Widown is a very dead Black Widow Kill em kill em all

They will once again start invading our living rooms with the colder weather coming on Good thing to look before reaching for anything in the house especialy if in a dark cubord or a pair of shoes before putting them on. That whats another web-site said talking about them also keep the bed and blanket away form the wall and off the floor. Justin told me one time right before the above insident after waking up from a nap....hey dad a Black Widow walked right by your face while you were asleep He's knows exactly what they look like coz I showed both my sons what real ones look like earlier so they could stay away from them and call me if they found any! Justing once said hey dad there's a black widow under my car, you know them toys kids get into and have pedals to propell them in! Well sure enough hiding underneath was one of them little bitccccc....errrrr bittys Well back to the story I asked Justin why didn't you warn me and wake me up??? He said he was watching it and it went right by your nose but don't worrry dad it crawed offf the bed and went into the cloths closet and hasn't come out yet!!!. It took me months and months to ever get comfortable to ever go back into that sutpid closet again

I feel your pain sweetie I'm need a man too once I see them Widows hanging out aroung me When i was 10 or 12 years old and my older brother Bob would get mad at and want to hit me i'd run and find refuge behind the locked door of the bathroom Couldn't get me there only problem he's just wait until I got tired and come out then smack me Well one time I hid a book of matches in there and when I ran in the next time I quickly unlooked the door then grabed my sisters Auqa-net hair spray and lit a match and held the flame right under the nossle and told Bob......Alright tough guy you ant me come on in and get me the doors unlocked!!! Man O man you should have seen his face once I pushed down on the nossle and the hairspray hit the flame senting out a very large flame right into his face The moment was fleeting though and the match went out as I chased him into the living room, should have used my dads zippo ligher instead it wouldn't have been so eaily blown out well needlesss you say the beating was much longer and a whooooooooole lot more brutal but the moment at the door just seeing his facial reaction was priceless

I hate spiders!!! We have these big hairy things called Wolf Spiders that try to get in the house to lay their eggs this time of year. They are so disgusting and scary looking. I was getting ready to do a laceration repair at work a few weeks back and went to pull out the little drawer with suture material in it...inside the little drawer was one of those nasty spiders. I think I freaked the patient out a little bit by my gasp! They really freak me out...I left the room to get one of the male docs to do the spider killing...most of them are okay with that; but there had been one in the hallway a week before that and I went to get him to kill it. He took one look then said...Oh wow!...he had someone get some spray and a long handled broom! Even he didn't want to get close to it...they jump! One of our nurses was on the toilet when one came up the sink drain right next to her...she managed to stay calm until she got out of there...me I think I'd have just run out of there, even if my pants were still down!! I search the whole bathroom now every time I go in there.....we have had the exterminator out twice now and haven't seen one since the second time they sprayed. But they are such icky looking beasts...and venomous as well.

I saw a documenty on these once and it showed the much, much, much, smaller male Black Widow spider very. very. very, carefuly getting on her web behind her to do "the dirty little deed" that she was beggggggggggggging and asking him for Well just as soon as bussiness was taken care of he once again very, very, very, carefully dismounted and got off behind her and he didn't get hardly a step no make that 8 steps away from her [8 legged spiders] when all of a sudden ...bammmmmmmmmmmm she was after him like flys on you know what only thing is he was 1 step faster and got away living to tell the tell to all his budies I suppose. Well I sure hope he didn't reveal eveything you know like "kiss n tell" Yup if she would have caught him she would have bit him, wraped him up in her webbing so he could never go out again, taken him home and tucked him conviently away somewhere close by to her where she would slowly suck all the life juices out of him before discarting his dried up drain shell of his former self!!! Gosh why does this sound soooooooooooo awfully familar??? Maybe it's not limited to only the insect population as once supposed, just ask some of the fellas leaving divorce court Ok ok don't get your knickers in a bunch i'm only teasshing and having fun with you here Yeah Greg that ones going to endear you to most of the ladies here you can count on that

Hey Rhond He must be protecting me too coz I've had some close run ins with them as I said in this post and because they are eveywhere yet no where around here! I mean I could go out and find one is about 10 or 15 mins if I wanted to but if I wasn't looking for one I would never see one for months at a time! Just got to know where they hide out and I do and reconize their webs because as I said they're very easy to spot too coz they're very erratic in design like the spider was drunk when it spun it Thanks for the kind words sis GBU guys too

Shall I buck the tide and sing the praises of spiders??? I love the creatures! I have a couple dozen as pets - black widows, that is. I have many more 'free range' spiders in my house, mostly in my garage.

Statistically, the mosquito is MILLIONS times more dangerous than spiders. A family friend of ours died from West Nile virus - a mosquito borne illness. And more children die of malaria than AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. I don't know an soul that's died from spider bites.

Spiders eat mosquitoes; anything that eats a mosquito is my friend. I'll grant they have enormous image issues to overcome.

I could go on... I am a nature educator after all!

Anyone going to accept an invitation to my house now???

PS Females of any species of spider will happy snack on mates, not just notorious B. Widows!

Now I just have to share this with ya Greggy, the Word for today by Bob Gass....Spiders a verse in proverbs I think he said ch 30 was talking about how the spider held on with her hands and got into the palace. We have to hold on, keep doing whatever we can do, just like the spider I just KNEW you'd appreciate this

Spider silk is stronger than steel, in equal amounts. If I had equal size strands of spider silk and steel, the silk wins! Cool, no?

Here goes my spider(s)stories...I picked up the water glass in my bathroom last year and was surprised to see a black widow spider in the bottom of the glass. That really scared me, because sometimes I get up in the middle of the night to get a glass of water and that would have been horrible to swallow a spider.

As for me I am really afraid of the brown recluse spider. In 1992 I was going to Macy's on one of my shopping sprees and got out of my car right next to some junipers. I noticed some small spiders next to the junipers and when I got into Macy's my ankle was itching. About three days later I was just not feeling well when I was getting ready for work and noticed one of my lymph nodes was swollen and the flesh was dying around the area where the spider bit me. When I went to the doctor he said "oh my, you have a Brown Recluse spider bite and would have been a very sick lady if you hadn't visited me." I got some meds and after a few days I was feeling much better and out shopping again.

I also use hair spray to kill spiders, I just love to watch them come to a screeching halt.

So glad you got appropriate medical treatment!

[ But they were probably not brown recluse bites. I forget the name of the spider but there's another one with a nasty bite that lives outdoors. BR usually live indoors. A National Geographic spider expert reviewed emergency room records and found that doctors tended to attribute reactions from 30 some sources as being from Brown Recluse bites. They are treatment experts, not spider experts. As long as you got better, we don't care if they get their spider wrong! ]

Greg your funny. Next time you see a black widow call me. I will kill it for you. If you spray regularly you can keep the population down. Also, the fact is most males do not get eaten by the female. Tha is in the insect population. As in the human population probably not true. LOL. I would rather see a black widow any day as opposed to a cockroach. Now those are gross. Spiders just hang out looking for food. Cockroaches walk all over your clean dishes, nibble on your food, and spread disease. Spiders don't do any of that. TK spiders do not live in modern day toilets. Silly girl.
