She's a beautiful 91 year old nearly blind woman that lives on my mail route. I park my jeep right in front of her apartment all day to deliver my route in 4 different directions from there and Elsie lets me use her restroom [about 3 or 4 times a day] and lets me keep my water bottles in her freezer to keep them cold during the warm seasons. I love this woman and so does everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing her never complaining about anything her outlook on life is beautiful because she loves Jesus so very much! She has lifted many of the prayer request up here on B.C. including Eli, you many times Penelope and now recently Matt and Netty in their desire to marry one another.
When I go in to see her she has asked me to just knock once and walk in letting her know who it is and I usually find her sitting at her piano playing the old hymns which she plays so well and was always in music ministry during her church days before her advanced age prevented her from attending or else sitting listening to a Braille book tape that I'm always delivering to her or a Bible program on the radio. This woman is a truly a treasure and a gem and if any of you could meet and talk with her you'd fall in love with her immediately as all the rest of us have.
The other day Daisy a friend and care taker to the woman who lives next door found Elsie still in bed unable to get up due to shortness of breath and chest pain so paramedics were called and she was taken to the hospital and placed in the Intensive care unit where they found some water in her lungs and were concerned about congestive heart failure. Daisy was able to get in and see her by telling the nurses she was family which is kind of funny coz she is hispanic and Elsie is as white as a ghost even having the whitest hair you ever saw Daisy said she was very tired and didn't know anything other than what I said above and was concern and told me that Elsie asked her to make sure that I knew what had happened to her. God bless her sweet heart I decided then and there that I too would go to hospital after work and tell them I was her 35 year old younger brother which wasn't a lie if you consider we are family in God's kingdom and thats the only family that will continue to live throughout all eternity.
I did get in to see her and I was glad to see they had moved her out of ICU and into a room without the need of constant care and monitoring so I knew she was improving a little bit. We were having a nice time talking all though she wasn't able to sit up and I could see that she was still so very tired but her spirit was just the same and was telling me if this was God's timing then she was more than ready to go but if not was hoping to go home soon because she said although the food was good there is no place like home!
The doctor came in while I was there and told her that there was no damaged done to her heart that they could tell and she would be allowed to get up out of bed when she liked which made her happy coz she didn't take to using a bed pan very well and may even be released from the hospital Sunday today. This of course made her very happy to hear but right after the doc left I asked if she she'd like to go back to sleep like I found her when I arrived and she said yes because she was very tired. I'm a little worried about how drained she is it's so unlike Elsie and even though Daisy and I will be able to keep a check on her during the day no one will be with her during the nights. This woman, this beautiful sister in the Lord would lift you and your needs up before God so please remember to pray for her and her complete recovery. I'm hoping she'll become one of the many centurions that I have had the pleasure of knowing in Leisure World including Marion Higgins who lived to be 112 years old and I had the pleasure of meeting when she was still at the young age of 110 and her niece asked me if I'd like to meet her and I said yes I would. Well she told me to speak slowly and loudly and when I went in she was sitting in a wheel chair with these great big head phones on listening to a Bible study and when she took them off I said Marion I'm honored to meet you I've never met anyone 110 years old before and she she just smiled and looked up at me and said neither have I! God bless the aging Saints of God they have so much love to share with us

LA Times Obituary
"Marion B. Higgins, 112; Oldest Person in California Lived During the Terms of 20 U.S. Presidents" by Jon Thurber, LA Times Senior Obituary Staff Writer, p. B13
March 4, 2006; Seal Beach, CA -- Marion Bigelow Higgins, the oldest person in California, whose life spanned the terms of 20 of the 43 presidents of the United States, died Thursday at her home at Leisure World in Seal Beach. She was 112.
Higgins had been in declining health for the last couple of months with congestive heart failure, according to her son Horace. "Her mind was sharp right up to the end," he said.
According to the Gerontology Research Group affiliated with UCLA, when Margaret "Madge" Russell died late last May at the age of 112, Higgins became the oldest living Californian. George Johnson of Richmond is now the state's most senior citizen. He is 111.
Higgins was a "poster girl" for an active lifestyle. At the age of 88, she participated in the 1981 Senior Olympics and took three gold medals in "the sprints." (She later admitted that she had few rivals in the [85 - 90] age bracket.) At 102, she self-published her life story and sold 1,000 copies. She was a rock and mineral hound and collected stamps well into her second century.
She was born June 26, 1893, in Williamsville, NY, a village outside Buffalo. Higgins was raised first on a farm in Maine and then on farms in Ohio, Michigan, and finally Idaho, where she graduated from high school. After graduation, she went to what is now the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. She earned her Bachelor's Degree and a teaching credential there before taking a faculty job at a one-room schoolhouse in Cascade, ID.
She married John Higgins, who worked for a logging company, in 1918, and for the next ten years the family moved wherever the work was. She had her first child in 1919 and, while bearing and raising two more boys, continued to teach school. One of her sons was born with a deformed leg that made movement in the snow difficult, so in 1927 the family moved to Los Angeles for the weather. Her husband's parents and a brother were in Pomona, so that's where the family settled. Her husband got a job as a machinist. During World War II, she worked in the BF Goodrich plant in Pomona making de-icers for the tails of B-17 bombers. She recalled that the day of the Japanese surrender, a supervisor told all the women in the plant to clean up and go home. That was the end of her war work. She became a widow four years after the war ended, when her husband died of a heart attack. He was 60. She never remarried.
Her eldest son, John, died last May. In addition to her son Horace, 83, she is survived by another son, Robert of Laredo, TX; 9 grandchildren; 12 Great-grandchildren; and 15, Great-great-grandchildren.
She had a career with the Los Angeles County assessor's office from 1947 to 1963, when she was forced to retire at the age of 70. She began drawing Social Security checks during the first Eisenhower administration. In her retirement years, she sang with a choral group called the Ontario Oratorio for 15 years and delighted her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren with her ability to recite the alphabet backward and forward.
Her son Horace said that "at the age of 105 his mother started reciting poems she recalled from her childhood." "And," he said, "she remembered them flawlessly." She avoided doctors as much as possible and found that chiropractors generally could cure what ailed her. She ate and lived moderately and was active in her church. "I face every day one at a time, and I'm always learning something new," she told an LA Times reporter last year. "I'm just a slow learner."

Praying for Elsie Mae. Wow, Greg, you have such a privilege to be around such folks and perhaps witness to them at times. I often think that God sometimes places us in positions for exactly one person. God Bless you. My Uncle lived in Leisure World Laguna Woods until he passed away in 2007. He was very young, and always said living there made him feel even younger. He was suddenly taken by cancer. He is in heaven.
From one bride to another, God keep you, bless you, increase you, Rhonda
gregduncan replies on 5/25/2008 7:44 am: Hi Rhonda I agree and know that my becoming a Letter Carrier and enventualy working in Leisure was all God's doing! You know that the Leisure world in Laguna Woods which is about 30 miles south of us is nearly 5 or 6 times larger than this one! Ours was built in the early 60's and that one in the late 80's or early 90's I believe! |

Oh man, Pat, wish we knew that when I went to Seal Beach to see Greg. We would have definitely gone to visit them. Oh well.
Greg, thanks for calling me to tell me you were sitting on "our" bench ((giggles)) the one we took the picture on. How was your dinner??
Will be praying for Elsie Mae. I remember you telling me about her. Was she the one who told you about the squirrel? Was she also the one that gave you the Benedryl instead of the Advil?? LOL
They are blessed to have you. I am sure they love that you love and care about them.
Did you ever find out about the house behind yours? Was the old woman ok? I remember discussing that you thought maybe she had passed. I don't remember you ever updating me on that. This story just reminded me of it.
Oh and guess what I woke up craving this morning. For some reason I was but I'm trying to get in my bikini this summer, maybe I shouldn't but I really love them. My mouth is watering right now.
Love ya Greg and I will remember my visit there for always. You are the real deal. There are only a handful of guys on here that are like that. Glad to call you friend!
Blessings and Enjoy your day off!!
