Philippians 2:8 "And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." KJB I for one will not be able to understand what Christ actually did for us on the cross of Calvary, and for sure not understand the condescension of the great Creator when He became man for my sake. "...He humbled Himself..." for the sake of all mankind, but most of mankind rejects what He did for them. Now that I have been saved I can understand one thing for sure, the rejection He felt on that day when He was led through the streets of Jerusalem on His way to die for all mankind. "...He became obedient unto death..." because it was His duty as the only perfect man who was able to even think about dying as God's sacrifice for the same ones who spit on Him, beat Him almost to death, and then drove those rough square hand made nails through His wrists, but He did it without one complaint, except to say, "My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46; Mark 15:34) KJB. Now, let's go over the things He was made for us. We read that "The Word was God..." and yet at the same time "...the Word was made flesh" (John 1:1, 14) KJB. Even though in the very beginning He, Christ, was the one who created human flesh in Adam and Eve, and then some few thousand years later, for Himself, but yet only "...in the likeness of sinful flesh" (Romans 8:3) KJB. Which means that, even though He was just as much Human or man, He was still fully God, even though He "...madest him a little lower than the angels ; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man." (Hebrews 2 He was also "...made under the law..." (again Galatians 4:4) KJB even though He, as the law giver, was completely above that very same law. Law was given to man to show them that they could not keep God's righteousness because of their sin nature which is inherited from Adam. So, because He did not have that sin nature, as we do, He did not sin, even though, as I said before, He was tempted as we are. He completely fulfilled the same law that He was the author of. But yet, He was "...made the curse for us..." in order to make sure that man could be redeemed from that very same law (Galatians 3:13). Then, the next to the last thing, on the cross, God even "...hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin..." (2 Corinthians 5:21) KJB. In other words, Christ came for one reason, "...to seek and to save that which was lost..." (Luke 19:10) KJB. In other words, He came to die on the cross so that man could be saved from the wrath of God, but only if they receive the Son of God as their Savior, for He is the only way to heaven. (John 14:6) KJB. He bear the guilt of sin for all of mankind, nailing our sins to the cross of Calvary. He went to the cross to bear the guilt and the punishment for all mankind. Unfortunately there will be more go to hell than there will be going to heaven, because their hearts and dark and they loved darkness more than the light. (John 3:19) KJB. They would rather have pleasure for a season rather than have complete joy for all eternity. The last thing we learn is from our text for today: "...He became (same Greek word as [was made]) obedient unto death, even the death of the cross...". I think I do not have to say much about how cruel the punishment of the cross was. Suffice it to say, there has never been anything, which is devised by man to inflict pain on another, than that of the Roman cross. It is amazing that when the prophecy was written, which tells us that the Messiah would be lifted up on the tree and die a very cruel death, that the idea of the cross had never been thought of. It took a very cruel Roman dictator to think of it. Now, because He was "made" all these things for us, we can "...be made the righteousness of God in Him..." (2 Corinthians 5:21) KJB. But, the thing is, as I said earlier, you can only be "...made the righteousness of God..." only if you are "...in Him...", that is, if you are saved. And the only way to be saved is to understand who Jesus is, God came in the flesh, (John 1:14) KJB, and receive Him as your Lord and Savior (John 1:12). Now, to be made the righteousness of God in Christ, you need to ask the Lord to come into your life and save you, and He will. Realize that you are a sinner (Romans 3:23; 5:12) and because of that sin you have an appointment for judgment (Romans 6:23). You have to open your mouth and declare Him in front of others because if you declare Him before others, He will declare you before the Father which is in heaven. (Romans 10:9-10; Matthew 10:32-33) KJB. So, what about you, have you understood what He did for you on the cross of Calvary? Think about it!
