I have a friend who is of Native American descent and he was telling me about his ancestors and also about this website: first people dot us It was very interesting and informative because mostly what I've learned about Native Americans in school was propaganda. Also listening to some of these men speak it clearly shows you that then as well as now,in order to be effective ambassadors for Christ we must practice what we preach by action and deed,in spirit and truth as well as words. Words alone can be misconstrued as one can see by the second from last post.Never- the- less when God saves,He moves effectively and Christianity spread pretty fast through the Native American people at and after this time. Some of our chiefs make the claim that the land belongs to us. It is not what the great spirit told me.He told me that the lands belong to Him,that no people owns the land;that I was not to forget to tell this to the white people when I met them in council. Kanekuk - Kickapoo No tribe has the right to sell even to each other, much less to strangers.Sell a country! Why not sell the air,the great sea as well as the earth?Didn't the great spirit make them all for the use of His children? Tecumseh - Shawnee What white man can say I ever stole his land or a penny of his money?Yet they say I am a thief. What white woman, however lonely, was ever captive or insulted by me?Yet they say I am a bad Indian. What white man has ever seen me drunk? Who has ever come to me hungry and left me unfed?Who has ever seen me beat my wives or abuse my children? What law have I broken? Is it wrong of me to love my own?Is it wicked for me because my skin is red?Because I am a Sioux?Because I was born where my Father lived?Because I would die for my people and my country? If the great spirit has desired me to be a white man he would have made me so in the first place. He put in your heart certain wishes and plans;in my heart he put other and different desires. Sitting Bull - Teton Sioux Brother,we have been told that you have been preaching to the white people in this place. These people are our neighbors. We are acquainted with them.We will wait a little while and see what affect your preaching has upon them.If we find it does them good and makes them honest and less disposed to cheat us,we will then consider again becoming Christians. Brother you say their is but one way to worship and serve the great spirit,if there is but one religion, why do you white people differ so much about it?Why not all agreed,as you can all read the Book? Red Jacket{Sogoyewapha} - Seneca The white man who is our agent is so stingy that he carries a linen rag in his pocket into which to blow his nose, for fear he might blow away something of value. Piapot - Cree Chief Something is wrong with the white mens council. When the Micmac people used to have council, the old men would speak and tell the young men what to do-and the young men would listen and do what the old men told them to do.The white men have changed that too: Now the young men speak, and the old men listen.I believe the Micmac council was far better. Peter Paul 1805 The English in general are a noble, generous minded people, free to act and free to think. They very much pride themselves on their civil and religious privileges;on their learning, generosity, manufacturing and commerce, and they think that no other man is equal to them. No nation,I think can be more fond of novelties than the English; they gaze upon foreigner as if they had just dropped down from the moon... They are truly industrious, and in general, very honest and upright. But there close attention to business procedures,I think, too much wordly-mindedness,and hence they forget to think enough about their souls and their God. Their motto seems to be"money, money, get money, get rich and be a gentleman".With this sentiment, they fly about in every direction like a swarm of bees,in search of treasure that lies so near to their hearts. Peter Jones{Kahkewaquonaby"Sacred Waving Feathers}Ojibwe Much has been said of the want of what you term"civilization" among the Indians.many proposals have been made to us to adopt your laws, your religion, your manners, and your customs. We do not see the propriety of such a reformation. We should be better pleased if we could actually see the good effects of these doctrines in your own practices rather than hearing you talk about them,or reading your newspaper on such subjects. Old Tassel - Cherokee Once when I was in Victoria I saw a very large house. They told me it was a bank and that the white men place their money there to be taken care of,and that by and by,they got it back, with interest. We are Indians and we have no such bank;but when we have plenty of money or blankets,we give them away to other chiefs and people, and by and by they return them, with interest, and our hearts feel good. Our way of giving is our bank. Maquinna - Nootka Chief We send our little Indian boys and girls to school and when they come back talking English, they come back swearing.Their is no swear word in the Indian languages, and I haven't yet learned to swear. Gertrude S. Bonnin - Yankton Sioux You must speak straight so that your words may go as sunlight into our hearts. Cochise - Chiricahua Chief Look at me- I am poor and naked, but I am the chief of the nation.we do not want riches, but we want to train our children right.Riches will do us no good.We could not take them with us to the other world. We do not want riches. We want peace and love. Chief Red Cloud - Sioux We do not want churches because they will teach us to quarrel with God,as the Catholics and Protestants do.We do not want to learn that. We may quarrel with men sometimes about things on earth but we never quarrel about God.We do want to learn that. I believe much trouble and blood would be saved if we opened our hearts more.I will tell you in my way how the Indians see things. The white man has more words to tell you how they look to him,but it does not require many words to speak the truth. Chief Joseph - Nez Perce How smooth must be the language of the whites, when they can make right look wrong, and wrong look like right. Here for the first time,I have touched the goose quill to the treaty, not knowing however, that by that act I consented to give away my village!Had that been explained to me I should have opposed it and never would have signed there treaty. What do we know of this manner of the laws and customs of the white people? They might buy our bodies for dissection and we would touch the goose quill to confirm it,without knowing what we were doing. This was the case with myself and my people touching the goose quill for the very first time.We can only judge what is proper and right by our standard of right and wrong which differs widely from the whites,if I have been correctly informed. The whites,if I have been correctly informed. The whites may do bad all their lives, and then,if they are sorry for it when they are about to die,all is well! Black Hawk - Sauk When it comes time to die,be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death,so when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way.Sing your death song and die like a hero going home. Chief Aupumut - Mohican |

Thanks Loki, good quotes. I was raised with a great respect for the people. My mother has always been angry for what was done to them/us. My ancesters are Blackfeet and Cherokee. I'm mostly Irish tho. Now I'm married to an Indian. He's also half irish. But he grew up indian. I'm learning his language and his culture, slowly but surely ha. Not many of his people are saved because of christians actions. We will be returning to his home to minister as soon as God says. It will not be easy, but I'm not afraid. God will go before us. Thanks again and blessings sweet Loki, R and T "There is no pit so deep, that God's love is not deeper still" Corrie Tenboom

My grandmother was part Cherokee, from Oaklahoma and once upon a time i had the words of a prophetic word from a great chief who spoke in a letter to the president that his people would surrender to the white man and go to the reservation but that soon there would be no more buffalo and talking wires would cross the horizon. Cant find it on any search engine, but my grandmother instilled in me a wonder of nature and as the indians named the trees, the tall people who reach their hands up to the sky, to the great spirit of God.

These are some wonderful sayings, Loki. My heart is close to the Native Americans after living right off the reservation, and knowing them. We would go celebrate with them the yearly sobriety feast of buffalo, and every thing you can imagine. I love that there is a resurgence of taking pride in the old ways. Sadly, every year there were so many deaths due to the effects of alcohol. Thank you for posting this, Sis. ![]() Romans 14 verse 5 One person regards one day holier than other days, and another regards them all alike. 3 Each must be fully convinced in his own mind.
