(I didn't realize what this was when I went.) I don't recommend anyone wanting a pure mind and sound sleep to see this. Explores what could occur if a virus outbreak in the UK immediately spreads throughout an area. The virus is called the "Rage Virus". People who get it, and are not partially or fully immune, go into a rage, and start maiming and killing just about anyone (without the virus) in sight. A little child shall lead them into it spreading further than anyone on Earth would like. I guess it was pretty well-made for this type of movie. Acting, etc., were mostly decent. Lots of blood and flying, dropping body parts, dead bodies. Starts off with the seemingly moral and ethical king of Sparta slaying messengers from Persia, which to me was an act of murder. There's a bribe/blackmail/near-rape type of scene. Yuck, yuck, and triple yuck. I am practically sorry I paid to go see this. I don't see watching it again in my future. Other than that, much of it was fairly well-made. Too bad the "evil laugh" and camera focus on a man's eyes were together so embarrassingly stupid. I'm glad I went alone. The theme, "Remember us" has got me thinking that what I may remember is the stupidity of a policy and mentality that never allows for retreat, or for that matter, surrender (although the latter would depend on the "enemy" ). Elsewhere I complained that Mel Gibson's Apocalypto was too graphic. Then I see this.} {Saw 10:00PM, Su. 3/11/2007.} 1408 (PG-13) ## John Cusack, Samuel L. A not-even-the-kid-likes the man-of-the-cloth type psycho thriller. Slow, badly paced, dull film. Comedy??? If there was anything funny or even remotely humorous about this, it didn't strike me. Practically no one was likable. About to go look at my own Ratings Guide to see how low I should rate this. LOL.} {Saw ?PM, 8/30/2007.} Apocalypto (R) ##-### Rudy Youngblood, Raoul Trujillo, Dalia Hernandez Action/Adventure 12/8/2006. 2 hr. 18 min. {One of the more violent films I've seen to date. This approaches the gruesomeness of Horror, and I don't generally watch Horror. The Passion, also directed by Mel Gibson, was very violent as well. Seemed a bit slow for all the action. I am guessing it has or comes close to holding the record for the longest chase scene on foot (unless the Lord of the Rings counts, LOL ). A bit slow in the telling, I thought, but I liked the general storyline struggle concept. That the whole movie was doing with Subtitles didn't bother me. Parts were pretty funny. Because of the WAY violence was handled, I don't know if I ever want to see another Mel Gibson film. Comedy, Domestic Comedy, Romance, Romantic Comedy {Not bad.} {Saw, ending ?PM, 11/22?/2007.} Bewitched (PG-13) (On DVD.) ##.5 Nicole Kidman, Will Ferrell, Shirley MacLaine, Michael Caine, Jason Schwartzman Comedy, Fantasy, Fantasy Comedy, Romantic Comedy, Showbiz Comedy 6/24/2005. 1 hr. 42 min. {Cute, funny, dumb, funny, cute.} {Saw ?PM, Sa. 6/30/2007 - Sun. 7/1/2007.} Blades of Glory (PG-13) ##-##.5 Will Ferrell, Jon Heder, Amy Poehler Comedy, Sports Comedy Fri. 3/30/2007. 1 hr. 33 min. {Dumb but fairly humorous. LOL.} {Saw 10:15PM, Sa. 5/12/2007.} The Bourne Ultimatum (PG-13) ##.5 Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, Albert Finney, Joan Allen, Scott Glenn, David Strathairn, Paddy Considine Action, Action Thriller, Spy Film, Unglamorized Spy Film, Paranoid Thriller 8/3/2007. 1 hr. 51 min. {Lots of violence, but not terribly "gratuitous". Part of the government gets more of a bad rap through this, as yet another secret section of an organization is behind more assassinations. In this film Bourne gets to rediscover some of his past, and why someone in a previous film said to him that he would always be a killer. (Really??) I imagine that this will be the last film in this series, but who knows.} {Saw 10:30PM, Fri. 8/24/2007.} Breach (PG-13) ##-##.5 Chris Cooper, Ryan Phillippe, Laura Linney, Dennis Haysbert, Gary Cole, Caroline Dhavernas Action/Adventure, Suspense/Thriller 2/16/2007. 1 hr. 50 min. {The attempt to trap a supposed spy in what they call the "worst" international security breach in this country is told in this movie. For all that, we see very little action, and very little spy activity. Most of it is an attempt to explore the reading of the outer actions of the man suspected of spying. The film works somewhat, but it runs slowly. There is some suspense, but it is not thriller; and calling it action/adventure would be pushing it. The film ENDS on a sour note, as we find out that some person of note is not only in prison, but is being continually kept in solitary confinement, 23 hours out of 24 in the day. Isn't there some International law or national law against such treatment of prisoners? Moreover, it begs the question: WHY? Was the person in prison maybe not really as guilty as we are led to believe? Makes me want to go visit just to find out. (About 40 minutes after this, I saw Bridge to Terabithia.)} {Saw 5:00PM, Sa. 3/3/2007.} Bridge to Terabithia (PG) ##-##.5 Josh Hutcherson, AnnaSophia Robb, Robert Patrick, Zooey Deschanel Action/Adventure, Drama, Family, Sci-Fi/Fantasy 2/16/2007. 1 hr. 35 min. {Loss throughout the first parts of the movie, and then a death of a major character, permeate this movie. If you plan to take a child under maybe the age of 13 or 14, or even at that age or above, I suggest you read about this, and pray about preparing your child. The death comes out of nowhere, and affects the rest of the movie. Terabithia is mostly imagined throughout the film, and we don't actually get to see much of it at all, except for a few animated creatures and scenes, until the last few minutes of the movie. One wonders whether Disney was trying their hand at making a film using a budget of an inexpensive independent film. If they spent more than a few hundred thousand, or maybe a million or two--in addition to what they paid the actors--I would ask why. The boy's reticence to really get into the imagining tends to drag the film down, though the nearly insufferable cheeriness of the girl is constant. In fact, her amazing Heidi-like/Annie-like exuberance makes you wonder how she could have been so "friendless" at previous schools, when her dad tells it to someone. She's incredibly friendly. It's unlikely, if not impossible, that she was so friendless. On the other hand, when there are adults like that, they tend to drive others away, and can be a catalyst for people thinking they are shallow, or what is wrong with them that they're so gleeful. On the other hand, I WISH people were more like her, in those respects, though her imagination runs wild, and contributes to nearly knocking the boy off balance mentally, late in the film. I LIKE movies with a point to them; but I am not sure what the point of this movie is: maybe a preparation for children for life's occasional meanness and losses that can come without any warning. Certain of the losses in this movie are not small ones, though while some of the people are "poor" monetarily--or so they try to lead us to believe--they're not having to live in abject poverty or starvation, like so much of the world supposedly is. However, being poor, sadly some people in the movie treat them as lesser people. I appreciate an attempt to address such concerns; but the failings or distractions in this movie were too much for me to really appreciate it much, as mean-spirited children continue to bully from start practically to finish, and none of the other children have the sense to bring adults into it to help stop it. But then, neither did I when I was in Grade School. PEOPLE, teach your children well to stand up for others, for the oppressed, and teach them how to go about that while not coming under attack themselves. Teach them how to band together (without becoming a gang or become bullying in mentality themselves. It's amazing what people will do in a group that they would not do alone.) If we do not have the Wisdom for all that, at least prepare them for the eventual evil treatment, lest they be taken by surprise, and feel crushed and depressed, having had little to no emotional and mental preparation. Prepare them for the onslaught of adolescence as well. It can really help to know: "Do not wake up love, until the right moment". Children need constant preparation as they enter their teen years. Give it to them. Talk with them. And let them know you are really listening. (Saw Breach about 40 minutes before this.)} {Saw 7:30PM, Sa. 3/3/2007.} Children of a Lesser god (R) (On DVD.) ## Allison Gompf, Marlee Matlin, Philip Bosco, Piper Laurie, William Hurt Drama, Psychological Drama, Romance, Romantic Drama 10/3/1986. 1 hr. 59 min. {Deaf but not dumb people mix with hearing people. Two become interested in each other. Their struggles. A bit slow. Some of the more emotional scenes seemed a bit stilted. (I am guessing that the hearing actor might have had a hard time in that time period really showing what he might feel in the way of anger if he were not feeling a bit like treating a deaf actor with kid gloves, but I could be mistaken. Don't get mad at me. LOL.)} {Saw 1/2007, I think.} Children of Men (R) ##.5-### Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, Chiwetel Ejiofor Action/Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Suspense/Thriller 12/25/2006. 1 hr. 49 min. {What would occur around the world on Earth if people could no longer conceive children? A LOT of cussing. I liked it. Yet another, amazing, Asian action-drama film that has a twisted ending. Lots and lots of violence. Yuck. Stop it already. I didn't know it would be subtitled, but most of the time I caught the dialog. LOL. If this word offended you, DON'T see this movie. It was so filled with excrement-al expletives, yuck. My 2 star rating is related to how likely I'd want to see it again. Otherwise it was a well-made movie.} {Saw ?PM. (Ended about 1:15AM on Mon. 7/2/2007.)} Dreamgirls (PG-13) ##-##.5 Anika Noni Rose, Beyoncé Knowles, Danny Glover, Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Keith Robinson, Sharon Leal Musical, Musical Drama, Period Film, Showbiz Drama Fri. 1/19/2007. 2 hr. 5 min. {Do you like the Motown music? Soul? Then you may like this movie. Personally, I typically liked and like Pop, Rock, and some of various other genres. I secretly liked Disco when I was younger. (Rock guys liked to say Disco "sucked".) But most of this is not Disco. And I really didn't recognize most of the tunes. The story line was fine as far as Musical Drama goes. Won lots of awards.} {Saw ?PM, ?/2007.} Elmer Gantry (Rating?? ) {On TV?} #.5-## 5/7/1960. 2 hr. 26 min. Burt Lancaster, Jean Simmons, Shirley Jones, Dean Jagger, Arthur Kennedy Drama, Religious Drama, How about Subversive to religion? {About as subversive as a movie can get, against Christian-related leaders, and easily-swayed followers. I hated this film because of it. I missed maybe the first 45 minutes, but that's okay, it is unlikely that my opinion would change. Someone who thinks that preachers are in it for the money, attention, or power might like it, as would those who think that Christians are dumb in general. My opinion is that Humans in general are easily swayed, even brainwashed, no matter what opinion you are of to begin with. Humans can also be stupidly stubborn and cynical, etc., not to mention proud. No one is immune. But I am getting off the topic here. God help us if any leaders teaching us are at all like this. Now I know what Elmer Gantry is about. Slow. I'd rather watch a documentary. Winning 3 Academy Awards / Oscars should have been a HUGE wake-up call to the churches about where Hollywood's mindset was at in 1960.} {Saw, ending ?PM, 10/1x?/2007.} Fantastic Four (PG-13) (On DVD.) ##-##.5 Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, Julian McMahon Action, Comic-Book Superhero Film, Science Fiction, Sci-Fi Action 7/8/2005. 1 hr. 46 min. {This was okay. I liked the sequel "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" more. Comedy, Spy, Thriller, TV-related {As a boy, I liked watching the TV show Get Smart, but an hour and a half of this was just too much DUMB for me. It was as silly as the TV show, but seemed somewhat dumber. I didn't really find it that funny. Gotta love the theme music though. LOL. I still have not found the TV show on DVD, or on reruns over the past year. I JUST saw a Preview that shows a new movie coming out called Get Smart. It'd better be good! More of a Thriller or Sci-Fi than Horror. Somewhat related to or based on book Invasion of the Body Snatchers. If I were to hypothesize a takeover of the Human Race, I'd say it's already happened, thousands of years ago, and mostly in our minds (and bodies). Don't you ever feel like you're being played? There may be something to the concept of "destiny" after all. For this concept, or a similar one, compare the films Stranger Than Fiction (PG-13), The Truman Show, and several others, The Matrix not left out. The truth may lie between the lines. And whoever has it may not want everyone (if anyone) to know it. Then again, there is the song "Unwritten", as sung by Natasha Bedingfield. (Weird, I made comments using the word Unwritten in my 2006-2005 MOVIES list, under Stranger.... I wonder if the song was out by then. Probably.) Or has all of history already been predetermined? Comedy, Drama, Romance, Romantic Comedy, Sex Comedy {I didn't notice when I rented it that it was Unrated. This version is vile and very crude. Other than that, it was funny. There is absolutely no reason why this couldn't have been somewhat crude while keeping it PG or PG-13 (more likely ). I'd not mind seeing a edited-for-TV version, as it has some touching moments. Unfortunately, this one had lots of cussing, sexuality, nudity, drug use, and yeah, I don't want to see it again. I wish I hadn't watched this version at all. It makes certain foul-mouthed, crude folks look ever so decent, even though they are shown intact with their crudeness and ignorance. Neurotic and verbally-abusive behavior permeate this film. It's part of the humor, and almost an exposé on current, trashy American culture today--well, it could have been, had it not been filled with gratuitous crud. If this were to become edited into a PG-like film, my rating would likely change to a ##.5 or maybe even ###. Or maybe not.} {Saw, ending around 12:30AM, 10/02/2007.} Laserhawk (NR.) It was corny, but nice. I like a movie with a message though, usually, and this tried to teach one. I don't really want to ruin it for anyone by making obnoxious comments, so I'll state that some people have supposedly thought it was Jim Carrey's finest performance. Well, as far as the movies I've seen him in, it's one of his few "dramatic" performances, and maybe the only one I've seen where he isn't acting goofy; only, he still seems to come off goofy in this film. (But maybe that's me.) Maybe somebody could give this guy anti-goofy lessons. I have a hard time taking him seriously because of the movies I've seen him in: The Mask (I liked ); Dumb and Dumber (or the other one ); The Grinch (so-so ); Liar, Liar (funny ); The Truman Show ("That's amazing", but, still goofy ). SO, my mind had a hard time adjusting to him in DRAMA. Slightly goofy drama, but drama nonetheless. I kinda of liked it, although I think I identified with the main character a little too much at points. LOL. If you "lost" your memory, then were to get it back after some time (even years maybe ), during which you started up a whole new life, would you choose the current life or the old one? And what does this have to do with the Matrix anyway? Cool movie, but I forget the ending already, 3 months later. Typical teenage movie, but some adults could appreciate it. Nearly the worst acting was by the person who played Nancy Drew, but nothing that can't be changed in a sequel, with some practice. She wasn't bad, though. With one woman, he can see further. There were some humorous moments, especially when a guy in the theater exclaimed, "Come ON!" when it seemed that we were practically back at the beginning. And I blurted out, "The movie can't be THAT long!" LOL. The theater cracked up for about 20 seconds or so. See if you can figure out when he said it! LOL.} {Saw 10:25PM, Fri. 5/11/2007.} The Number 23 (R) ##-##.5 Jim Carrey, Virginia Madsen, Logan Lerman, Danny Huston Suspense/Thriller 2/23/2007. 1 hr. 35 min. {What can I say? It was interesting. It's not really a "horror" flick. Jim Carrey is getting better at drama, I think; but he still gives me the goofies. LOL.} {Saw 8:00PM, Su. 3/11/2007.} Ocean's Thirteen (PG-13) ##.5 George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia Comedy, Crime, Caper, Master Criminal Films, Ensemble Film 6/8/2007. 1 hr. 53 min. {Okay. So how long can they ride the line between illegal and unethical/immoral? Another "do-something-good-by-stealing" movie; but it's not Robin Hood.} {Saw 9:30PM, Mon. 6/11/2007.} Pact with the devil / AKA Dorian (R) (On VHS.) #.5 Ethan Erickson, Jennifer Nitsch, Malcolm McDowell, Victoria Sanchez Drama, Fantasy, Gothic Film, Horror, Psychological Thriller, Thriller 2001. 1 hr. 29 min. {Yeah, yeah. What's he doing watching this? Good question. Did I LEARN anything? I don't think so. Reference is made to an earlier story called "The Picture of Dorian Gray", for which Oscar Wilde and Albert Lewin wrote the screenplay for the 1945 film. Synopsis: (What?? from me?? Lol.) When a would-be photographer is spotted by an evil one (or the evil one ), he is tempted to become a supermodel. From here, vanity and ego take over his seemingly decent nature, until he sinks into the depths of depravity, but not until he makes a pact in blood to keep his attractive, youthful looks from aging. Though he is even warned that the original Dorian Gray's story didn't turn out well for him, he does it anyway, on his own, as a silent agreement, then verbally agreeing to "forever". Sick. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton played in a similar film called "Doctor Faustus (1967 )", a film based on a play by Christopher Marlowe (d. 1593, yes, in the 1500s ). I saw this film as a boy. Creepy, but slow, very slow, I thought. (And he never gets the girl! LOL.) Of any film I recall, similar to this story, I preferred "Bedazzled (2000 )", ##-##.5. (Yes, I saw that too. LOL.) In all cases, the person who makes the pact or deal does NOT get what he hopes for. Either the disappointment is external or internal. In any case, power corrupts, especially the kinds of power offered in certain of these stories. And while pleasure increases, internal enjoyment decreases. And it's more than just the concept of "diminishing returns" at work. For, the one who keeps wanting more can never be satisfied! Nearly quoted in the movie, "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" Matthew 16: 26; Mark 8: 36.} {Saw, ending between 3 and 5AM, Sun. 9/2/2007.} Pan's Labyrinth (R) ##-### (if edited) Sergi Lopez, Maribel Verdu, Ivana Baquero Art House/Foreign, Sci-Fi/Fantasy 12/29/2006. 1 hr. 50 min. {Wow. Yet another violent film. I didn't expect that in this fantasy thriller-drama film. Wow. They won't be getting many teenagers to see this film in the theaters with the R rating. Very graphic. This is like a chapter taken out of a combination of the Lord of the Rings, and The Little Mermaid, but with a Mel Gibson-violence-type director. ENOUGH of the overdoing the violence stuff already--double yuck. All the violence and cruelty aside, I liked the film overall. With some serious editing of the violence, it could be made for TV, and even for children. If so, I'd love to see it again. Subtitled. In Spanish.} {Saw 10:50PM, Fri. 1/19/2007.} Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (PG-13) ### Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Geoffrey Rush, Jack Davenport Adventure, Adventure Comedy, Fantasy, Fantasy Adventure, Sea Adventure, Swashbuckler Thu. 5/24/2007. 2 hr. 45 min. {#3. Yep. More pirates. More violent, I guess, than the others. Starts with hangings of those even remotely connected with pirates, including a boy. (They at least cut away visually when his body is dropped.) Lots of sword fighting and shooting further on. Themes related to the land of the dead are prominent. There is a "goddess" theme as well, along the lines of the kinds of sea gods and sea goddesses that have been heard of in sea legends and myths. The film was a bit long, almost 3 hours. With previews, it took about 3:20. There was a great point in the film where an Intermission could have been. I liked it better than 2.} {Saw 7:15PM, Sun. 5/27/2007.} Premonition (PG-13) ##.5 Sandra Bullock, Julian McMahon, Nia Long, Kate Nelligan, Amber Valletta, Peter Stormare Drama, Suspense/Thriller 3/16/2007. 1 hr. 50 min. {Woman, married with two daughters, finds herself living out the days of a week of her husband's death in jumbled time order. Through it she remembers what occurs on each day. And looks for ways to face whether there is anything she can do about it, whether there is any way she can stop her husband from being killed, and whether she even really wants to stop it. Cool time-travel-based idea; but didn't do a lot for me. Maybe it was partly because of the people behind us, and the guy there that just wouldn't quit coughing. What is it with people putting up their shoes on theater seats anyway? Most, she thought, had scientific explanations. But, this last series of events--similar to the 10 plagues that came upon Egypt in the Bible's book of Exodus--throw her for a loop. Action, Adventure, Crime, Drama, Suspense, Thriller {Forgettable the first time I saw it. Weeks later two of us who had seen it together could not recall whether or not we had seen it, or what it was about! Lol. So, we watched it again! LOL. And, it's a pretty decent action film. Not intensely paced, and a bit disjointed, but overall pretty well done. For example, jumping back and forth during the helicopter scene took away from the climax and stun of that moment, both times I saw it.} {Saw, ?PM, 7?/2007.} {Saw, ending ~10:30PM?, 9/10/2007.} Shooter (R) ##.5 Mark Wahlberg, Michael Pena, Danny Glover, Elias Koteas, Kate Mara Fri. 3/23/2007. 2 hr. 4 min. {Another memorable movie. Not as funny or fun as the first one or two, but still okay.} {Saw 10:10PM, Fri. 5/18/2007.} The Simpsons Movie (PG-13) ##.5 Voices: Tom Hanks (supposedly ), Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria animated comedy, Satire, Comedy, Domestic Comedy {One of the funniest dumb movies I've seen in a while. Lots of very inappropriate, gratuitous violence, crudity, and irreverent humor. Some cussing. (What did you expect? LOL.). Not terribly graphic, though. Lots of laughs in the theater from ADULTS. Many of the children around me, though, didn't laugh. This is almost more for adults than for children; and actually, I wouldn't recommend or suggest it for children. Well, we didn't think so. But it wasn't terrible or bad or anything, unless you think comic-book stories generally are by default. Some of the acting seems to be getting dumber, though. (Please stop.) With so much action, I was having a hard time not yawning. I WAS tired, and it WAS late! LOL. I'd rather see Hitch! LOL. (Yeah I liked Hitch. Though what that has to do with THIS movie, I don't know. The animation. Wow. I kind of liked the film, until the robots started to talk. Then it got dumber than I would have liked. It was kind of like the Ents in the Lord of the Rings, only after drinking a little dumb-water. LOL. But it wasn't so bad that I couldn't like it at all. Just closer to a cartoon than I would have liked. Inconsistent crunching, crashing, bashing--all loud--and then tenderly swinging under bridges (very quietly ), without being detected. The film lost me, in the almost-believable fashion, when a large-sized robot turned into an item that could be kept in a purse. Good grief. But Wow, the animation. Impressive!
