<<<<<< This place touched my heart more than any other.
This little church is in Zacatecas, Mexico - this little handmade church - built by the hands of those hungry for God - their first church was a small lean-to in the pastors back yard.
Zacatecas is 2 hours south of San Luis Potosi - the poor of the poor - but very full of dignity - out in the middle of nowhere in the desert - this is one of the places they plowed by hand with donkeys and horses - even the donkeys and horses were skinny - they raised sheep in their back yards - they had a windmill at the bottom of the mountain where the women of the small village came down with buckets and jugs in wheelbarrows to fill up with water from the pump by the windmill - the men didn't help them - so some of our men helped several of the ladies to haul their water back to their homes.
Notice the dirt road - very rough to travel on all the way from the bottom of the mountain to the top - about 15-20 miles. Used to be a mining town. This pastor's family served us a meal of pasta salad and crackers - these people that have so little - wanting to serve us - and so pleased and smiling to want to do this for us - we knowing that they really couldn't afford it - but we also learning how to receive from them - it was a humbling experience.
We sang songs with Spanish words with actions to go with the songs - we did dramas - we passed out handmade beaded bracelets and stickers and crayons and coloring papers - and candy to the kids - they were so grateful - one child we had to teach her about coloring because she had never been to school and had never seen a crayon before and didn't know what to do with it.
Even the adults wanted to color so we gave them crayons and they were enjoying it so much. They were soooooo grateful for even the smallest thing or a hug. One little girl kissed the back of the hand of someone who hugged her. The children didn't have tv's nor computers nor Ipods nor gameboys - probably had never seen any of those items - they had a ball to play with and enjoyed it so much.
You could see the hollow look and the pain in the eyes of those children (and adults too) that had been molested - and you wanted to sneak off with them and take them home with you.
Their little church is growing - and they want to extend the walls of the church out on the left side - our church wants to raise the $7,000 it takes to buy the supplies and send a team back to build those walls - our mission team leader is a stone/brick layer - he wants to help build those walls. Please pray for us that we can do that.
You can see Pastor Arturo there in the front - in the white shirt and black pants - he's married and has 2 children of his own. He has planted 3 churches total like this one in his area. The most humblest of men - awesome man of God - he is Mexican and is from this area.
We laid hands on and prayed for many people - we saw people delivered and healed by the power of God. There are literally no markets or stores probably for 50 miles or more - there's no schools as we know them - only a few shabby looking residential building. How they have survived I don't understand. A piece of my heart will always remain in Mexico - we thought we were doing so much - but they changed my life forever - I came back with more than I left AL with.
Please pray for these folks - as God leads you.

Good to see you back, Marilyn. Yes, we have so much to be thankful for here in this country. I help support a church in American Samoa. And from the sound of what you wrote the conditions are similar. Have a great day and God bless you.

Such a simple life yet it calls attention to itself. I have often thought that children in our country miss many of the simple pleasures I experienced as a child. Blessings to you.

Thank-you Marilyn for sharing your experience with us. It amazes me how little; can make these children in the poor countries so happy. While here in our country many of the children complain because all they have is still not enough to make them happy.
God Bless You Sue
John 14:6 - Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me
spiritfilled052 replies on 7/21/2008 5:41 pm: Yes, they are grateful for a 1 cent balloon or a sticker put on their hand or face or a hug - many many smiles for those things - it's quite a contrast to the spoiled children in the USA. Blessings Sue!! |

Howdy; I was just reading your post about your missions trip to Mexico. I went two summers ago to the town of Ciudad Victoria. This was quite an experience for me as it was the first time in Mexico and the first time flying. I would like to go back again, but not in mid August as it was over 100 degrees everyday. We were very blessed to stay in this AC cooled house and drive in an AC cooled car that we rented in Texas. We visited a couple churches and the people were so loving. I wish I knew more Spainish. It is amazing how much you can communicate with a few words and gestures. I was the only "gringo". I went with five others, all biligual latinos. We left from Michigan and flew to Texas. The city is very modern and has a Wal-mart and a Subway. My biggest problem was the toilets, about not being able to flush them. You just have to put the dirty paper in a trash can next to the toilet. We had a neat experience the night before we came back. The area had not had any rain for a month. They sacrificed one of their lambs for us and as soon as they slit it's throat it started pouring. It was like something out of a movie. It seemed like because they sacrificed for us that God was blessing them. They offered me brains. I told them I wasn't that hungry. They just rolled them and the eyes up in tortillas. I guess they are considered delicacies. Over all it was really some experience. I recommend everyone to go on at least one missions trip in their lifetime. These people are poor by American standards, but are very rich in the ways of the Lord. Sometimes they would cross the mountain to come to church. They would walk for miles in 100 degree weather, tell me would any Americans do that? Pray for the Mexican people as they are dealing with their own terrorism, especially along the border towns. We take our freedom so much for granted. Shame on us. God bless you all. Russ
spiritfilled052 replies on 7/27/2008 4:20 pm: You are so right Russ - they are poor by American standards but are very rich in the ways of the Lord. They have a dignity you don't see often - and yes, I don't miss the toilet paper thing either. Thanx for sharing your comments about Mexico here - and blessings in abundance!! Stop by anytime!! |
